Travel in the month of Ramaḍān

7759 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Ibn Sīrīn from ʿAbīda al-Salmānī.  He said: Whoever has traveled in the month of Ramaḍān, and he had fasted in its beginning as a resident, then he is to fast (to) its end.  Do you know hear that God says “So whoever from you has witnessed the month then he is to fast it” (2:185).

7760 – Maʿmar from Qatāda from al-Ḥasan.  He said: When Ramaḍān has begun for the man (while he is) among his people, and he fasted some days from it then he traveled, so if he wants he fasts and if he wants he breaks his fast.

And Ibn Jurayj said it from ʿAṭā.

7761 – Maʿmar from Qatāda.  He said: ʿAlī said: I do not regard the fast but to be obligatory upon him.  God said “So whoever from you has witnessed the month then he is to fast it”.

7762 – Maʿmar reported to us from al-Zuhrī from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUtba from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās.  he said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ came out us to Mecca in the year of the conquest in Ramaḍān until he reached al-Kudayd, then he broke his fast.  So the breaking of the fast was the last of the two commands.

7763 – Ibn ʿUyayna said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿĀṣim reported to me from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿa that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb commanded a man who had fasted Ramaḍān in travel to do qaḍā of it.

And ʿAmr b. Dīnār reported it to me from Kulthūm b. Jabr from ʿUmar.

7764 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb that Umm Dharr entered upon ʿĀ’isha giving salām to her, and that was in Ramaḍān.  ʿĀ’isha said to her: Are you traveling in Ramaḍān?  I do not like to travel in Ramaḍān.  And had it reached me while I was a traveler I would reside (i.e. stop traveling).

7765 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Fasting in travel?  He said: You break your fast when you shorten (your prayer), and you fast when you fulfill the prayer (i.e. when you perform it without shortening it).

7766 – Maʿmar from someone who heard al-Ḥasan saying: When the man has entered the morning as a fasting person in the month of Ramaḍān, then he went out traveling by day, he does not break his fast that day unless he fears thirst for himself.  So if he fears it he breaks his fast, and the qaḍā is upon him.  So if he wants he breaks his fast, and if he wants he fasts.

Maʿmar said: And Jābir al-Juʿfī reported to me from al-Shaʿbī.  He said: When he has gone out by day in Ramaḍān he breaks his fast if he wants when he goes out.
