What of clothing suffices for the man

1364 – Maʿmar and Ibn Jurayj from al-Zuhrī from Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Abū Hurayra that a man said: O Messenger of God, does the man pray in the single garment?

So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: Are there not two garments for all of you?

Ibn Jurayj said in his ḥadīth: Indeed I leave my garment upon the hanger, and I pray in the single garment.

1366 – al-Thawrī from Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh.  He said: I saw the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ praying in a single garment,

1367 – ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from Ḥumayd b. al-Ṭawīl from Anas b. Mālik.  He said: The last prayer that the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ prayed was in a single garment, opposing between its two ends, behind Abū Bakr.

1377 – Ibn Jurayj said: I heard ʿAṭā saying: The man prays in the (single) garment, even if he possesses the means, however he is to drape it over himself.  And it is preferable to me for him to pray in the riḍā with the izār.

Then he reported a report to us which Muḥammad b. ʿAlī reported to him from Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh, and he was of the last of the companions of the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ in death.  He said: We would come in his house and he would lead us (in prayer) in his house in the Banū Salama and we were a band.  So he stood and led us.  His clothes-hanger was a place upon which there was his riḍā.

He said: So he draped a garment over himself.  He said: It did not rise upon his shoulders.  Muḥammad said: I think he said: A nisāja (a type of wrap one wears).  He said: So I did not see it (or: him) but (it was for) him to show us that there has no harm with that.

Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAṭā said: Jābir said: I and my father and my maternal uncle are from the companions of al-ʿAqaba.

1387 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: What is the least (amount) of clothing that one may pray the voluntary prayer in?

He said: In a (single) garment.

I said: Draping it over himself?

He said: Yes.
