The opening takbīra and the raising of the hands

2515 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Sābiṭ reported to me that the face of the prayer is that the man does takbīr with his hands, his face, and his mouth, and (that he) raises his head some when he commences, and when he does rukūʿ, and when he raises his head.

2516 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to Nāfiʿ: Would you see ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar when he did takbīr in the prayer raising his head and his face towards the sky?

He said: Yes, a little.

2517 – Maʿmar reported to us from al-Zuhrī from Sālim from Ibn ʿUmar.  He said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would raise his hands when he would do takbīr until they would be opposite his shoulders, or close to that.  And when he raised his head from the rakʿa he raised them.  And he would not do that in the sujūd.

2518 – Ibn Jurayj said: Ibn Shihāb narrated to me from Sālim b. ʿAbdullāh that Ibn ʿUmar would say: When the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ stood in the prayer he raised his hands until they would be opposite his shoulders, then he would do takbīr.  And when he wanted to do rukūʿ he did the like of that.  And when he raised from the rukūʿ he did the like of that.  And he would not do it when he raised his head from the sujūd.

2519 – ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from Ibn Shihāb from Sālim.  He said: When Ibn ʿUmar got up to the prayer he raised his hands until they would be opposite his shoulders, and he when did rukūʿ he raised them.  So when he raised his head from the rakʿa he raised them, and when he stood from a mathnā he raised them.  And he did not do that in the sujūd.

He said: Then he would inform them that the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would do it.

ʿAbdullāh said: I heard Nāfiʿ narrating from Ibn ʿUmar the like of this except that he said: He would raise his hands until they would be opposite his ears.

2520 – Ibn Jurayj said: Nāfiʿ reported to me: Ibn ʿUmar would do takbīr with his hands when he would open (the prayer), and when he would do rukūʿ, and when he would say “samiʿAllāhu li-man ḥamidah”, and when he would raise his head from the rakʿa, and when he would be even standing from a mathnā.  He said: And he did not do takbīr with his hands when he had raised his head from the two sajdas.

I said to Nāfiʿ: Would Ibn ʿUmar make the first from them more elevated than them?

He said: No, equally.

I said: Would he go beyond (?) his ears some from them?

He said: No, and he would not reach his face.

So he indicated to me the breasts or lower than them.

2521 – Maʿmar from Qatāda: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would raise his hands when he did rukūʿ, and when he raised his head from the rukūʿ until they would be opposite his ears.

2522 – al-Thawrī from ʿĀṣim b. Kulayb from his father from Wā’il b. Ḥujr.  He said: I looked at the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and he raised his hands in the prayer when he did takbīr, then when he did takbīr he raised his hands.  Then when he said “samiʿAllāhu li-man ḥamidah” he raised (his hands).

He said: Then he sat and stretched his left foot (did iftirāsh), then he set his left hand on his left knee, and his right forearm on his right thigh.  Then he indicated with his index finger, and he put the thumb upon the middle finger making a ring with it, and he clenched the rest of his fingers.  Then he did sujūd and his hands were opposite his ears.

2526 – Ibn Jurayj said: Ḥasan b. Muslim reported to me from Ṭāwūs that he said: The first takbīr that is for the opening with the hands is more elevated than what is apart from it of the takbīr.  He said: Until one goes beyond the head with it.

Ibn Jurayj said: I saw Ibn Ṭāwūs going beyond his head with his hands.

2527 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: I have seen you doing takbīr with your hands when you open the prayer and when you do rukūʿ and when you raise your head from the first sajda and from the last one, and when you straighten up from the mathnā.

He said: Indeed.

I said: Has it reached you that the opening takbīr with the hands is greater (i.e. higher) than what is apart from it?

He said: No.
