Someone who steps on dry or wet foulness

83 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Do you regard that if a person did wuḍū and stepped on excrement that a wuḍū would be upon him (i.e. that he must do a new wuḍū for prayer)?  He said: No, rather he washes the excrement from him and he is to clean it.  He said: And I say – so take this: if he had stepped on dung he rubs his feet with the ground – or he said with the dirt.

84 – Isrā’īl from al-ʿAwwām b. Ḥawshab from Ibrāhīm the like of the saying of al-Shaʿbī.

85 – Maʿmar from Qatāda.  He said: If a man stepped in human excrement up to the ankles, then there is naught upon him but that he wash his feet.

86 – Maʿmar from Qatāda regarding a man who urine or blood contacted his body while he had wuḍū.  He said: He washes the trace of the urine and the blood and does not do wuḍū.

87 – al-Thawrī from Jābir from ʿAṭā and Ṭāwūs and some other men.  They said: When you have stepped on wet foulness then wash it, and if it was dry then there is no harm.

88 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Do you regard that if I stepped on dry excrement that I wash the bottom of my feet?  He said: No.  I said: So if something from that dry excrement contacted my hand and my face?  He said: No, by my life.  When we ascend with the funeral (al-janāza) the wind raises up and scatters the dry excrement on our faces, and we do not do wuḍū and do not wash our faces and nothing from that.

89 – Maʿmar from ʿAṣim b. Sulaymān.  He said: He said: We used to enter upon Abū al-ʿĀliya al-Riyāḥī, so we would do wuḍū and he would say: Do you not do wuḍū in your saddles (or: abodes)?  So we would say: Yea, but we stepped in filth.  He said: There is no wuḍū upon you.  Shall I inform you of what is more severe than that?  The wind makes it fly upon it in your heads and your beards.

92 – Maʿmar from Qatāda.  He said: One day we went out with Ibn al-Musayyab to a masjid.  The ground had been rained upon and in it there was mud.  So when we came to the door of the masjid, a man from the group washed his feet.  So Ibn al-Musayyab said to him: Did you not do wuḍū in your saddle (or: abode)?  He said: Yea, however we passed in this mud.  He said: There is no wuḍū upon you.

93 – Maʿmar said: Someone who saw al-Ḥasan walking in the mud reported to me.  He said: And the mud was not reaching the top of the feet, however it was filling their bottoms.  So when he reached the gate of the masjid, he wiped the bottom of his feet with the ground, then he entered the masjid and did not wash them.
