The beginning of the tayammum

879 – Maʿmar from Hishām b. ʿUrwa from his father or someone else.  He said: A necklace of ʿĀ’isha’s fell, so the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ sent a company to seek it.  Morning reached them and they did not have any water with them.  They prayed without a purification, and they complained of that to the Prophet So the tayammum was sent down.

Maʿmar said: And Ayyūb reported to me, he said: Abū Bakr passed by ʿĀ’isha and said: You have detained the people and caused them distress.

Maʿmar said: And Hishām said from his father, and he also said it from Ayyūb.  He said: So when the tayammum was sent down Abū Bakr was gladdened by that, and he said: I did not know that you are blessed.  An affair has not come down with you that you dislike but that God, blessed and exalted be he, has made a good in it for the Muslims.

880 – Mālik from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim from his father from ʿĀ’isha.  She said: We went out with the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ in one of his journeys until we were at the desert, or in the midst of the army, when my necklace was broken.

He said: So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ stayed looking for it and the people stayed with him, and there was no water with them.  The people came to Abū Bakr and said: Have you seen what ʿĀ’isha has done?  She has stayed with the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and the people and there is no water with them.

She said: So Abū Bakr came while the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ had placed his head upon my thigh.  He said: You have detained the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and the people while they are not upon water and there is no water with them.  So Abū Bakr reprimanded me, and he said to me whatever God had willed him to say, and he set about piercing me with his hand in my waist.  And naught prevented me from moving but the place of the Messenger of God He slept upon my thigh until he entered the morning without water.  So God sent down the verse of tayammum “so betake (fa-tayammamū)”.

Usayd b. Ḥuḍayra said: It is not the first blessing of yours, O family of Abū Bakr.

He said: So we roused the camel that I was upon, and we found the necklace under it.

883 – Mālik from Nāfiʿ that he approached Juruf with Ibn ʿUmar, and when he came to Mirbad he did not find any water so he did tayammum with earth, and he prayed and did not repeat that prayer.

884 – al-Thawrī from Muḥammad and Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd from Nāfiʿ that Ibn ʿUmar did tayammum and prayed ʿaṣr while there was a mile or two between him and Medina.  Then he entered Medina while the sun was elevated and he did not repeat (the prayer).

885 – Ibn Jurayj, he said: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jubayr b. Shayba reported to me that Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: When you are junub wipe yourself.  Then, when you have found water do not do ghusl from your janāba if you want.

ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said: So I mentioned that to Ibn al-Musayyab and he said: And what made him know (that)?  When you have found water do ghusl.

886 – Ibn Jurayj said: I was narrated to from ʿAlī that he said that.

887 – Isrā’īl from Abū Isḥāq from al-Ḥārith from ʿAlī.  He said: One does ghusl when he has found water.

888 – Saʿīd from Maʿmar from Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Tajībī that he asked Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān about a man who does tayammum then finds water in the time (of the prayer).  He said: He repeats the prayer.

889 – al-Awzāʿī said: One of our companions reported to me, he said: Two men from the companions of the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ were afflicted with that, then they found water in the time (of the prayer) so they did ghusl – or he said: so they did wuḍū.  One of them repeated the prayer and the other did not repeat.  They came to the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and told him the story.

So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said to the one who had repeated: You have been brought your reward twice.

And he said to the other: It has sufficed for you.

890 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb from Bakr b. Sawāda that janāba afflicted two men, so they did tayammum and prayed.  Then they found water in the time (of the prayer) so they did ghusl.  One of them repeated the prayer and the other did not repeat.  So they asked the Prophet

The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said to the one who repeated: You have been brought your reward twice.

And he said to the other: It has sufficed for you.

891 – Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥarmala reported to me.  He said: A Bedouin came to Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and said: I had a wet dream before morning and I did not find any water, so I did tayammum and prayed.  When I entered morning I found water, so do I do ghusl?

So Abū Salama said: If you want do ghusl, and if you want do not do ghusl.

Abū Ḥarmala said: So I said to Ibn al-Musayyab: Are you hearing what this one is saying?  And I narrated his saying to him.

So Ibn al-Musayyab said: Did he?

I said: Yes.

He said: He cast pebbles in his direction and he said: Do you see that if one of you does not know what the rulings are, why does he give rulings to the people?  O fellow, you were purified for your prayer, so when you have found water then the ghusl is obligatory upon you.
