The traveler fearing thirst while he has some water with him

896 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: A man who only has an idāwa (a receptacle for holding water for wuḍū) of water with him in a journey and janāba has afflicted him, or the prayer has arrived while he does not have wuḍū.  So he fears thirst if he purified himself with what is in the idāwa.

He said: God is worthiest of excusing, he is to betake to the dirt.

897 – Hishām b. Ḥassān from al-Ḥasan.  He said: When the traveler fears thirst for himself and there is some water with him, he does tayammum.

898 – Maʿmar from Qatāda likewise, and from Juwaybir from al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim likewise.

899 – Ibn Mujāhid from his father and from ʿAṭā, they said: When one fears thirst and there is some water with him, he does tayammum and does not do wuḍū.
