The man who janāba afflicts while there is with him of water the amount by which he could wash his face, his hands, and his genitals

902 – Maʿmar from ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd from al-Ḥasan regarding a man whom janāba afflicts while in a journey, and he does not have with him water save for what he could wash his face and his hands (or: arms) with.  He said: So he is to wash his face and his hands and pray and he does not do tayammum.

Maʿmar said: And I heard (someone) other than him saying he is to wash his face and he is also to do tayammum.

903 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: A man who janāba has afflicted in a journey while there is some water with him.  Does it suffice for him to wash his face and his hands, while there is with him what he could reach with it his feet, his hands, and his arms?

He said: No, by my life, it does not suffice for him.  He is not to leave that when he it reaches his feet, his hands and his arms for him.

Then he recited the verse of wiping.

So he renders them together and renders the wiping to it when he has not found water.

904 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Is it preferable to you that I wipe from the water once only, or three wipings with the dirt?

He said: Rather, a wiping with the water so that he prefer (?) the water over the dirt, even if the water is little and does not suffice.  So he is to prefer its little (amount) over the dirt, reaching of his wuḍū of his limbs whatever he reaches.  However, if the water is little, he begins in that with the washing of his genitals, even if it does not reach but that for him.

905 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: So there was with him of water what he can do wuḍū with to his face, his feet, and his arms.  Does he leave off the water if he wants and wipe himself with the dirt?

He said: No, by my life.

I said to him: So there was with him what he could only wash his face and his genitals with.

He said: He is to wash his face and his genitals, then he is to wipe his hands with the dirt.

I said: So there is what washes his genitals (only).

He said: So he is to wash his genitals and to wipe his face and his hands with the dirt.
