The man becoming distant from water

911 – al-Muthannā b. al-Ṣabbāḥ, he said: ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb reported to me from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab from Abū Hurayra.  He said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and said: O Messenger of God, I am in the desert (lit. the sand) for four or five months, and in us there will be the woman with post-partum bleeding, or the menstruating woman, or the junub.  So what do you regard?

He said: Betake you to the dirt.

912 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Abū Qilāba from a man of the Banū Qushayr.  He said: I had become distant from the water, and janāba afflicted me, so I did tayammum.  (Doubt) befell myself and came to Abū Dharr in his home, but I did not find him.  I came to the masjid and I had been described his form for him, when there he was, standing praying.  I made him known by epithet, and I gave salām to him.  He did not reply to me until he departed (from his prayer).

I said: Are you Abū Dharr?

He said: Indeed my family says that.

I said: There is no one from the people whose seeing is more beloved to me than you.

He said: So you have seen me.

I said: We had become distant from the water, and janāba afflicted us.  So I lingered for some days doing tayammum, and there befell in myself from that an affair that was dubious to me.

He said: Do you recognize Abū Dharr?  I was in Medina and I disliked residing in it, so the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ commanded for me a spoils.  I went out in it and janāba afflicted me, so I did tayammum with earth and prayed for some days.  Something (of doubt) befell myself from that until I thought I was destroyed, so I commanded for a young camel and it was bound.  Then I rode it until I arrived at Medina.  I found the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ in the shade of the masjid in a band from his companions.

I gave salām to him, so he raised his head, and said: Glory be to God, Abū Dharr?

So I said: Yes, O Messenger of God.  Janāba afflicted me so I did tayammum for some days, then something befell myself from that until I thought I was destroyed.

So the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ called for some water, and a black slave woman brought it in a drinking bowl, it shaking – he is saying: it was not full.  [I concealed myself by the riding-camel and I commanded a man and he concealed me, and I did ghusl.] (- not in all manuscripts)

Then he said: The wholesome earth is sufficient so long as you have not found water, even up to ten years.  So if you have found water, then make it touch your skin.

He said: And the janāba of Abū Dharr was from intercourse.

913 – al-Thawrī from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhā from Abū Qilāba from ʿAmr b. Bujdān from Abū Dharr that he came to the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and he had become junub.  So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ called for some water and he concealed himself and did ghusl.

Then the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said to him: The wholesome earth is the wuḍū of the Muslim, even if he did not find water for ten years.  So when he has found water he is to make it touch his skin, for that is good.

914 – Maʿmar from Ibn ʿUyayna from Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī from Nājiya b. Kaʿb from ʿAmmār b. Yāsir.  He said: I became junub while I was in camels, so I rolled on the ground as the riding animal rolls on the ground.  I came to the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and mentioned all of that.

So he said: The tayammum would have sufficed you from that.

Maʿmar said in his narration: By God, I have not lied against him in the narration.

915 – al-Thawrī said: Salama b. Kuhayl reported to me from Abū Mālik from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abzā.  He said: A man from the people of the desert came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb.  He said: O Commander of the Believers, we reside for the month and two months not finding water.

ʿUmar said: As to me, I would not pray until I found water.

So ʿAmmār b. Yāsir said: Do you not remember when you and I were in a land thus, pasturing camels, and do you know that I became junub?

He said: Yes.

(ʿAmmār (?) said:) So I rolled on the ground and I mentioned that to the Prophet  صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, so he laughed and said: The earth would have sufficed you from that, that you say thus.  And he struck the ground with his hand, then he shook it off, then with them he wiped on his face and his arms up to close to half of the arm.

ʿUmar said: Fear God, O ʿAmmār.

So ʿAmmār said: What do you have against me regarding a truth, O Commander of the Believers.  If you want I will not mention it so long as I live.

ʿUmar said: Certainly not, by God, rather I entrust to you of your affair what you have taken over.

916 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā.  He said: A man reported to me that Abū Dharr has intercourse with his wife and there was no water with him.  So he wiped his face and his hands (or: arms), then a thing befell in himself so he went to the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, and he was from him (the distance of) a journey of three (days).

He found the people had prayed the morning (prayer) and he asked about the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, when lo he had relieved himself at the privy.  So he followed him and the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ turned and saw him.  The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ dropped his hands to the ground and placed them.

He said: I think he said: Then he shook them off.  Then he wiped his face and his hands (or: arms) with them.  Then he reported to him how he had wiped.

917 – Ibn Jurayj, he said: I said to ʿAṭā: Do you regard that His saying “or you have touched women” that it is sexual intercourse?

He said: Yes.

I said to him: The junub who is in travel, if he has not found water how is his purification?

He said: The purification of the one of who is not at the place of wuḍū, if he did not find water is the same, they do not differ.  They wipe their faces and their hands (or: arms).

918 – Maʿmar from ʿAmr from al-Ḥasan.  He said: When the man is remote from the water in his camels, or in his sheep, then there is no harm with him having intercourse with his wife and doing tayammum.

Maʿmar said: And I heard al-Zuhrī saying that.

919 – al-Thawrī and Dāwūd b. Qays from Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān from Abū al-ʿAwwām.  He said: I was sitting with Ibn ʿUmar and a man came and said: I become distant in my camels, so do I have intercourse when I have not found water?  Ibn ʿUmar said: As to me I would not do that, so if you do that fear God, and do ghusl when you have found water.

920 – Ibn Jurayj, he said: I was reported to from Mujāhid.  He said: The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ sent ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and a man from the Anṣār guarding the Muslims.  They became junub when the cold of the early morning hit them.  So ʿUmar rolled in the dirt, and the Anṣārī did tayammum with wholesome earth and wiped himself with it.  Then they prayed.  So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: The Anṣarī was correct.

He said: Yes.  He did not regard there to be any harm with it.

924 – Isrā’īl from Abū Isḥāq from al-Ḥārith from ʿAlī.  He said: When you have become junub, then make your effort to ask about water.  If you were not able (to find any) then do tayammum and pray.  And when you have been able (to find) water then do ghusl.
