Saʿīd reported to me from Ibn al-Musayyab.  He said: The companions of the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would differ regarding the man who copulated with his wife, then departed from her prior to ejaculating.  He mentioned that Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī come to ʿĀ’isha and said: The disagreement of the companions of the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ has distressed me regarding an affair that is grievous to me that I meet you with.

She said repeatedly: What is it?

So he said: The man having intercourse with his wife and not ejaculating.

Abū Mūsā said: After you I will never ask about this again.

955 – Maʿmar said: Someone reported to me who heard Abū Jaʿfar saying: The Muhājirūn would command the ghusl and the Anṣār would say “The water is from the water”, so who arbitrated between these?  And the Muhājirūn said “When the place of the circumcision has touched the place of the circumcision the ghusl has become obligatory”.  So ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib decided between them and they argued to him.

He said: Do you regard that were you to have seen a man inserting and exiting, that the ḥadd would be obligated against him, while a ṣāʿ of water would not be obligated upon him?

So he ruled for the Muhājirūn, and that reached ʿĀ’isha, so she said: Sometimes we did that, I and the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, so we got up and did ghusl.

957 – Ibn Jurayj said: Hishām b. ʿUrwa narrated to me from ʿUrwa from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī.  He said: Ubayy b. Kaʿb narrated to me from the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.  He said: How do you regard when one of you has had intercourse and he become flaccid, and did not ejaculate?

So the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: He washes what touched from it and he is to do wuḍū.

So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: The water is from the water.

962 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAmr b. Dīnār reported to me that Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Zayyāt reported to him from a man - ʿAmr mentions his lineage – that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ called a man from the Anṣār so he went out to him.  So they started out before a distance, and they passed by a murya (?) and the Anṣarī did ghusl.

The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ asked him (about it) so he said: You called for me while I was upon my wife.

So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: When one of you has not emitted semen, or he has become flaccid, the wuḍū suffices for him.
