Performance of the ghusl of the junub

983 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAṭā said: When I do ghusl from janāba I begin with my genitals, then I rinse my mouth and rinse my nose, then I wash my face and my hands.  Then I pour upon my head, then by my hands, then by my feet.

He said: And I wash my feet in the place of bathing, then I put on sandals in it, then it suffices me that I not wash them after.

I said: How do you regard if you did not put on sandals in the place of bathing and you went out from it barefooted?

He said: In that case I would wash them.

984 – From Ibn Jurayj: I said to ʿAṭā: The scoop upon the head, what has reached you regarding it?

He said: It has reached me that it is thrice.

I said: How do you regard that if I were to pour upon my head three times, while I have shoulder length hair, soaking with every time I pour it, and in my mind there is a want to not wet the root of the hair as I desire.

He said: Thus it would said: Three times is the Sunna.

986 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: And the junub passes over all that is apparent from him?

He said: Yes.

So a person said to him: Does the junub pour upon himself?

He said: No, rather he does ghusl with a washing.

(He said: Does) the junub wash his anus, the pathway of excretion for the janāba?

He said: Yes, by God, and indeed that is most deserving of what is washed from him.

I said: Does not the man strike off the feces and so render himself good, then come and do wuḍū and not wash his anus?

He said: Janāba is in the space of time (?) once.

987 – Maʿmar from Abū Isḥāq from a man who is called ʿAṣim that a clan came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ and asked him about the voluntary prayer of the man in his house, and about what is lawful for the man of his menstruating wife, and about the ghusl from janāba.

So he said: As to the voluntary prayer of the man in his house, it is a light.  So illuminate your houses and what good is a house in which there is no light.  As to what is lawful for the man of his menstruating wife: what is above the waistcloth is for you, and do not look into what is under it until she purifies herself.  And as to the ghusl from janāba: do wuḍū with your wuḍū for the prayer, then wash your head three times, then pour the water upon your skin.

988 – Isrā’īl from Abū Isḥāq from ʿAṣim b. ʿAmr al-Bajilī that a band from the people of Kufa came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and said: We have come to you asking you about three habits: about the voluntary prayer of the man in his house, and about what is lawful for the man of his menstruating wife, and about the ghusl from janāba.

He said: Are you sorcerers?

They said: No.

He said: Are you soothsayers?

They said: No.

He said: Where are you from?

They said: From Iraq.

He said: From which Iraq?

They said: From the people of Kufa.

He said: You have asked me about habits that no one has asked me about since I asked the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ about them.

Then he mentioned the like of the ḥadīth of Maʿmar.

989 – Ibn Jurayj said: Ibn Ṭāwūs reported to me from his father that he used to say: Someone who has defected or janāba has afflicted him, he is to avoid the harm with his right hand and wash with his left until he is cleansed.  So he is to wash with his left hand then he is to pour the water upon his face and his head.

990 – Ibn Jurayj said: Nāfiʿ reported to me about the doing of the ghusl of Ibn ʿUmar from janāba.  He said: He would pour out upon his hands and wash them, then he would scoop up with his right hand and pour upon his genitals and wash it with his left hand.  So when he had finished from the washing of his genitals, he washed the left hand.  Then he rinsed his mouth and rinsed his nose, and sprinkled in his eyes.  Then he began with his face and washed it, then his head, then his right hand, then his left, then he scooped up with both of his hands upon the rest of his body after he washed it.

He said: And ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar would not sprinkle the water in his eyes save in the ghusl of janāba.  As to the wuḍū for the prayer, then no.
