How many times are the washings in the wuḍū?

119 – Maʿmar reported to us from ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib.   He said: I entered upon al-Rubayyiʿ bt. ʿAfrā and she said: Who are you?  He said: I said: I am ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib.  She said: And who is your mother?  I said: Raytā bt. ʿAlī – or so-and-so bt. ʿAlī – b. Abī Ṭālib.  She said: Welcome to you, O son of my sister.  I said: I have come to you asking you about the wuḍū of the Messenger of God.  She said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم would come to us and visit us, and he would do wuḍū in this vessel or in the like of this vessel, and it is around a mudd.  She said: So he would wash his hands and rinse his mouth and rinse his nose, then wash his face thrice, then wash his arms thrice, then wipe his head two times, and wipe his ears, their outside and their inside, and wash his feet thrice.  Then she said: As to Ibn ʿAbbās he had entered upon me and asked me about this ḥadith, so I informed him.  So he said: The people refuse but to wash while we find wiping upon the feet in the book of God.

120 – al-Thawrī narrated to us from Abu Isḥaq from Abu Ḥayya b. Qays from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه that he did wuḍū thrice, then he wiped his head, then he drank the leftover of his wuḍū.  Then he said: Whoever it gladdens to look at the wuḍū of the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم, then he is to look at this.

121 – Isrā’īl b. Yūnus reported to us from Isḥāq from Abu Ḥayya b. Qays from ʿAlī.   He said: I witnessed ʿAli in al-Raḥba, he urinated then he did wuḍū.  So he washed his hands thrice, and he rinsed his mouth and rinsed his nose thrice.  And he washed his face thrice, and his arms thrice.  And he wiped his head, and he washed his feet thrice.  Then he finalized standing, then he took and drank from the leftover of his wuḍū.  Then he said: Indeed I saw the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم do as you saw me do, so I loved to show you.

122 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAbd al-Karīm reported to me from al-Khārifī that in Kufa ʿAlī said to his servant: O Qanbar, get some wuḍū-water for me.  So he brought it.  al-Mughīra said: From ʿAbd al-Karīm: In an ʿuss (a drinking cup or bowl).  So he began and washed his hands prior to inserting them in the wuḍū-water three times.  Then he rinsed his mouth thrice, and he rinsed his nose thrice.  Then he washed his face thrice.  Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow thrice, then the left likewise.  Then he scooped up a scooping of water with one of his hands upon his head and wiped with it.  He said: In summer as though he scooped it up for the summer.  He said: Then he washed his right foot up to the ankles thrice, then the left likewise.   Then he stood up standing, and he drank from the leftover of his wuḍū-water.  Then he said: Whoever would love to look at the wuḍū of the Messenger of God, so it is thus, and he is to do wuḍū.

He said: And they regard that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم drank the leftover of his wuḍū standing as ʿAlī had done, then he prayed the ordained prayer.  He said: Them he did not depart from his sitting until he summoned Qanbar for wuḍū-water of the prayer.  Then he scooped up a single scooping and rinsed his mouth from it, and he rinsed his nose, and he wiped his face and his forearms, and his head and his feet, a single wiping from that scooping apportioning it for every limb.  So he rinsed his mouth and he rinsed his nose and wiped his face and his forearms and his head once.  Then he said: Thus is the wuḍū of someone who has not had a ḥadath (something that breaks one’s wuḍū) – he is saying: If one likes one does wuḍū, or if wants he does not.

123 – Ibn Jurayj.  He said: Someone who I believe reported to me that Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn reported to him.  He said: ʿAlī called for some wuḍū-water, so it was brought near for him.  So he washed his hands three times prior to inserting them in his wuḍū-water.  Then he rinsed his mouth thrice, and he rinsed his nose thrice.  Then he washed his face thrice.  Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow thrice, then the left likewise.  Then he wiped his head with a single wiping.  Then he washed his right foot up to the ankles thrice, then the left likewise.  Then he stood standing, and he said to me: Hand it to me.  So I handed the vessel in which the leftover of his wuḍū-water was.  So he drank from the leftover of his wuḍū-water.  So I wondered at that, and when we saw me wonder he said: Do not wonder, for I saw your father the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم doing the like of what you saw me doing – he is saying: with this wuḍū-water of his, and with his drinking of the leftover of his wuḍū-water standing.

124 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAṭā reported to me that it reached him from ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān that he rinsed his mouth thrice and he rinsed his nose thrice.  Then he poured forth on his face thrice, and upon his arms thrice.  Then he washed his feet three times.  Then he said: Thus did the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم do wuḍū.  ʿAṭā said: And I was not sure of it from ʿUthmān.  I did not increase it and I did not decrease it.

125 – Isrā’īl from ʿĀmir b. Shaqīq from Shaqīq b. Salama.  He said: I saw ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān doing wuḍū.  So he washed his hands three times, and he rinsed his mouth and he rinsed his nose and he washed his face thrice.  He said: And I counted it.  He said: And his forearms three times.  And he ran through his fingers and ran through his beard when he washed his face prior to washing his feet.  Then ʿUthmān said: I saw the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم doing like what you saw me do.

126 – Maʿmar reported to us from Zayd b. from ʿAṭā b. Yasār from Ibn ʿAbbās that he did wuḍū.  So he washed every limb from him (or: it) with a single washing, then he mentioned that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do it.

127 – Dāwūd b. Qays from Zayd b. Aslam from ʿAṭā b. Yasār from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do wuḍū one time.

Translator’s note: Doing wuḍū one time, two times, etc. in these narrations is referring to how many times one performs its parts, particularly its washings (e.g. whether one washes one’s face one time, two times, or three times).

128 – al-Thawrī from Zayd b. Aslam from ʿAṭā b. Yasār from Ibn ʿAbbās that he said: Shall I inform you of the wuḍū of the Messenger of God So he scooped up with his right hand then poured upon the left with one scooping.

138 – Mālik b. Anas from ʿAmr b. Abī Yaḥyā al-Māzinī that a man said to ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd – and he was from the companions of the Prophet Are you able to show me how the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do wuḍū?  He said: Yes.  So ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd called for some wuḍū-water, and he poured forth on his hands and washed them two times.  Then he rinsed his mouth, and he rinsed his nose thrice, and he washed his face thrice.  Then he washed his arms up to the elbows two times.  Then he wiped his head with his hands, and he drew them forward and went back.  He began with the forepart of his head, then he took them to the back of his neck, then he brought them back until they had returned to the place from which he had begun.  Then he washed his feet.
