What the wuḍū and the prayer atones

139 – Maʿmar reported to us from al-Zuhrī from ʿAṭā b. Yazīd al-Laythī from Ḥumrān b. Abān.  He said: I saw ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān doing wuḍū.  So he poured forth upon his hands thrice and washed them, then he rinsed his mouth and rinsed his nose, then he washed his face thrice.  Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow thrice, then he washed the left like that.  Then he wiped his head.  Then he washed his right foot thrice, then the left thrice likewise.  Then he said: I saw the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم doing wuḍū in the manner of my wuḍū.  Then he said: Whoever does wuḍū with this wuḍū of mine, then prays two rakʿat without his mind straying, whatever has preceded of his sins will be forgiven for him.

140 – Ibn Jurayj said: Ibn Shihab narrated to him from ʿAta b. Yazid al-Jundaʿi that he heard Humran the client of ʿUthman, that ʿUthman was doing wudu.  So he poured on his hands three times, and snuffed and ejected from his nose thrice, and rinsed his mouth thrice.  And he washed his face thrice, and he washed his right arm up to the elbow thrice, and he washed the left like that.  Then he wiped his head.  Then he washed his right foot thrice, then the left like that.  Then he said: I saw the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم doing wudu in the manner of my wudu.  Then he said: Whoever does wudu with this wudu of mine, then stands and does two rakʿat without his mind straying, whatever has preceded of his sins will be forgiven for him.

141 – Ibn Jurayj said: Hishām b. ʿUrwa narrated to me from his father from Ḥumrān the client of ʿUthmān.  He said: ʿUthmān sat in the place people sit, and he called for some wuḍū-water and he did wuḍū.  Then he said: By God, I will surely narrate to you a ḥadīth that were it not for a verse in the book of God I would not have narrated it to you.   I heard the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: A man has not done wuḍū and done his wuḍū well but that whatever is between him and the last prayer is forgiven for him until he prays it.  He said: I heard it from him.

142 – Isrā’īl from Abū Isḥāq from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAṭā from ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī.  He said: We were with the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم in a journey and we were alternating the grazing of the camels. So one day I came and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was giving a sermon, and part of his saying had preceded me (i.e. he had missed part of the sermon).  So I sat to side of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and I heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: Whoever does wuḍū and thoroughly performs the wuḍū, then stands praying, so he prays a prayer, knowing what he is saying in it until he finishes from his prayer, he would be as in his form the day his mother gave birth to him.

So he said: I said: Well done!  SoʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: He had said prior (even) more generous than this.  He said: Whoever does wuḍū and thoroughly performs the wuḍū, then stands and prays a prayer, knowing what he is saying in it until he finishes from his prayer, then said “I testify that there is no god but God and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger”, eight gates from the Garden are opened for him, he enters from whichever of them he wants.

143 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī that Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī said: We burn ourselves.  So when we have prayed the ordained prayer, the prayer atones whatever was prior to it.  Then we burn ourselves.  So when we have prayed it atones whatever was prior to it.

144 – Maʿmar from Aban from Saʿīd b. Jubayr.  He said: Salmān al-Fārisī said: When the believing slave rises up to the prayer, his offenses are put upon his head.  So he does not finish from his prayer until they separate from him as the ripe palm trees of dates, dropping right and left.

145 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Misʿar from Zayd al-ʿAmmī from al-Ḥasan.  He said: A caller from the people of the Earth does not call to the prayer until a caller from the people of Heaven calls “Rise, O children of Adam, and extinguish your fires!”  He said: So the mu’adhdhin stands calling the adhan, then the people rise to the prayer.

146 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Misʿar from ʿAmr b. Murra from Abū Kathīr al-Zubaydī from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ.  He said: An ulcer came out in the neck of Adam – meaning a pustule – so he prayed a prayer and it dropped to his chest.  Then he prayed a prayer and it dropped to the waist.  Then he prayed a prayer and it dropped to the palm.  Then he prayed a prayer and it dropped to the thumb.  Then he prayed a prayer and it left.

147 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash from Abū Wā’il.  He said: ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd said: The prayers are atonements for whatever is between them so long as the major sins are avoided.

148 – al-Thawrī reported to us from his father from al-Mughīra b. Shubayl from Ṭāriq b. Shihāb that he spent the night with Salmān looking at his striving in worship.  He said: So he rose and prayed from the end of the night, and it was as though he did not see what he supposed (?).  So he mentioned that to him, and Salmān said: Guard upon these five prayers, for they are atonements for these transgressions, so long as you did not commit murder.  When the people entered the next day, they are upon three stations.  From them is one for whom it is for him and not against him, and from them is one for whom it is against him and not for him, and from them is one for whom it is not for him and not against him.  A man who seizes (?) in the darkness of night and the inadvertency of the people, so he rises praying until he enters morn, that is for him and not against him.  And a man who seizes in the inadvertency of the people and the darkness of night, and he goes at random in sins, so that is against him and not for him.  And a man who prays ʿishā then sleeps, so that is not for him and not against him.  And beware you of journeying into the heart of the night, and betake you to purpose and endurance.

149 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Ṣaliḥ the client of al-Taw’ama from al-Sā’ib b. Khabbāb from Zayd b. Thābit.  He said: The prayer of a man in his house is a light, and when the man rises to the prayer his offenses are hung above him.  So he does not prostrate a prostration but that by it God atones from him his offenses.

150 – Ibn ʿUyayna from a man from the people of Basra from al-Ḥasan.  He said: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The praying person has three characteristics: mercy is spread upon him from his foot up to the lofty regions (or: clouds) of Heaven, and the angels surround him from his foot up to the lofty regions of Heaven, and a caller calls out “Would the confider know who he is confiding with, he would not turn away.”
