What the wuḍū removes of sins

151 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAṭā said to me: When one has rinsed his mouth, what exits from his mouth are sins.  And when one has rinsed one’s nose, what exits from his nose are sins.  And when one has washed one’s face, what exits from it are sins.  And when one has washed one’s arms, what drops from them are sins.  And when one has wiped one’s head, what drops from it of filth are sins.  And when one has washed one’s feet, what drops from them are sins, until one returns to being as his mother gave birth to him, save for the commission of a major sin.

152 – al-Muthannā b. al-Ṣabbāḥ from al-Qāsim al-Shāmī that a female master of his called Umm Hāshim made him sit in the shelter (?) with an inkwell and a pen.  She sent to Abū Umāma and asked him about a ḥadīth which he had narrated from the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ regarding the wuḍū.  So he said: I heard the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ saying: Whoever rises to the wuḍū and washes his hands, the sins exit from his hands.  And when he rinses his mouth, the sins exit from his mouth.  And when he rinses his nose, they exit from his nose.  And thus it is until he washes the feet.  So when he goes out to the obligated prayer, it is as a blessed ḥajj.  And if he goes out to a voluntary prayer, it is as a blessed ʿumra.

153 – Muqātil and a man from Ashʿath b. Sawwār from Abū Isḥāq from ʿĀṣim b. Ḍamra from ʿAlī.  He said: I said: O Messenger of God, which nighttime is best?  He said: The middle of the last part of the night.  He said: Then the accepted prayer up to the prayer of fajr.  Then there is no prayer until the rising of the sun, then the accepted prayer up to the prayer of ʿaṣr.  Then there is no prayer until the sun sets.  He said: I said: O Messenger of God, how is the prayer of the nighttime?  He said: In twos.  He said: I said: How is the prayer of the daytime?  He said: In fours.   He said: And whoever prays a benediction upon me, God writes two carats for him, and the carat is the like of Uḥud.  When the servant has risen, doing wuḍū, and he washes his hands, his sins exit from his hands.  Then when he rinses his mouth and rinses his nose, his sins exit from his pharynx.  Then when he washes his face, his sins exit from his face, his hearing, and his vision.  Then when he washes his forearms, his sins exit from his forearms.  Then when he wipes his head, his sins exit from his head.  Then when he washes his feet, his sins exit from his feet.  Then when he has risen to the prayer, he exits from his sins as the day his mother gave birth to him.

154 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Abū Qilāba from ʿAmr b. ʿAbsa.  He said: He was sitting with some companions of his when a man said to him: Who will narrate a ḥadīth to us from the Messenger of God So ʿAmr said: I will.  He said: Go ahead, may your father be for God, and be careful.  ʿAmr said: I heard him saying: One who develops a gray hair in the path of God, it will be a light for him on the Day of the Resurrection.

He said: Go ahead, may your father be for God, and be careful.  ʿAmr said: I heard him saying: One who casts an arrow in the path of God, it will be the equal of emancipating a slave for him.

He said: Go ahead, may your father be for God, and be careful.  ʿAmr said: I heard him saying: One who emancipates a person, for every limb of (the emancipated slave) God will emancipate a limb from him from the Fire.

He said: And I heard him saying: One who emancipates two people, for every two limbs of theirs God will emancipate two limbs from him from the Fire.

He said: Go ahead, may your father be for God, and be careful.  ʿAmr said: And a ḥadīth that had I not heard it from him but one time, or two, or three, or four, or five times, I would not have narrated it: There is no Muslim servant who does wuḍū, so he washes his face, but that the sins of his face drop from the ends of his beard.  So when he washes his arms, the sins of his arms drop from between his nails.  So when he wipes his head the sins of his head drop from the ends of his hair.  So when he washes his feet, the sins of his feet drop from their bottoms.  So when he comes to a masjid and prays in a congregation in it, then his wage has fallen upon God.  So when he rises and prays two rakʿa, they are an atonement.

He said: Go ahead, may your father be for God, and be careful.  Narrate and do not err.

155 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Suhayl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ from his father from Abū Hurayra from the Prophet He said: When the servant rinses his mouth, every sin that he would speak exits with the water when it exits from his mouth.  And when he washes his face, every sin in his face exits with the water which drops from his face.  And when he washes his arms, the sins from his arms exit with the water which drops from his arms.  And when he washes his feet, the sins from his feet exits when he washes them.  And when he exits from his house to the masjid, a sin is erased from him by every footstep, and he is increased by it with a good deed until he enters the masjid.

156 – Qays b. al-Rabīʿ from al-Aswad b. Qays from Thaʿlaba b. ʿUmāra from his father.  He said: I don’t know how many narrated this ḥadīth to me from the Messenger of God There is not a servant who does wuḍū, and does his wuḍū well, until the water flows upon his face, then he washes his forearms, until the water flows upon his elbows, then washes his feet, until the water flows by heels, then prays and does his prayer well, but that he is forgiven for what has come before.
