Wuḍū in the copper (vessel)

171- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ فِي النُّحَاسِ قَالَ‏:‏ جَاءَتْهُ النُّضَارُ وَالرِّكَاءُ وَطَسْتُ نُحَاسٍ‏.‏


171 – Ibn Jurayj said: Nāfiʿ reported to me that ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar used to dislike doing wuḍū in copper (i.e. from a vessel made of copper).  He said: Nuḍār (gold, but see the next tradition), the small copper pots, and copper have been mentioned (?).


172- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ لاَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فِي الصُّفْرِ‏.‏ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ‏:‏ وَلاَ نَأْخُذُ بِهِ‏.‏ قُلْتُ‏:‏ مَا النُّضَارُ‏؟‏ قَالَ‏:‏ عُودُ الطَّرْفَاءِ‏.‏


172 – al-Thawrī from ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār from Ibn ʿUmar that he used to not do wuḍū in brass.

Sufyān said: We do not go by it.  I said: What is nuḍār?  He said: The stick of the tamarisk.


173- عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ قَالَ‏:‏ كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ، يَغْسِلُ قَدَمَيْهِ فِي طَسْتٍ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ قَالَ‏:‏ وَكَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ فِي قَدَحٍ مِنْ صُفْرٍ‏.‏


173 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār.  He said: Ibn ʿUmar used to wash his feet in a basin of copper.  He said: And he used to dislike drinking in a cup of brass.


174- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ ذَكَرْتُ لَهُ كَرَاهِيَةَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فِي النُّحَاسِ قَالَ‏:‏ الْوُضُوءُ فِي النُّحَاسِ مَا يُكْرَهُ مِنَ النُّحَاسِ شَيْءٌ، إِلاَّ لِرِيحِهِ قَطْ‏.‏


174 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā.  He said: I mentioned to him the dislike of Ibn ʿUmar regarding copper.  He said: Wuḍū is done in copper.  There is nothing disliked of copper at all except due to its scent.


175- عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فِي آنِيَةِ النُّحَاسِ‏.‏


175 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Dāwūd b. al-Ḥuṣayn from ʿIkrima from Ibn ʿAbbās that he used to do wuḍū in the copper vessel.


176- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ فِي النُّحَاسِ‏.‏


176 – Maʿmar from a man from Nafiʿ that Ibn ʿUmar used to dislike doing wuḍū in copper.


177- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، كَانَ يَغْسِلُ رَأْسَهُ فِي سَطْلٍ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ لِبَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ‏.‏


177 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ used to wash his head in a bucket of copper of one of his wives.


178- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ فِي النُّحَاسِ قَالَ‏:‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَغْسِلُ رَأْسَهُ فِي سَطْلٍ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ لِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ حِينَئِذٍ عِنْدَنَا مِنْ آلِ جَحْشٍ‏:‏ نَعَمْ ذَلِكَ الْمِخْضَبُ عِنْدَنَا‏.‏


178 – Maʿmar said: I asked ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar about the wuḍū in copper.  He said: The Messenger of God would wash his head in a bucket of copper of Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh.  So a man from the Āl Jaḥsh who was with us at that time said: Yes, that brass tub is with us.


179- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ‏:‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ‏:‏ صُبُّوا عَلَيَّ مِنْ سَبْعِ قِرَبٍ لَمْ تُحْلَلْ أَوْكِيَتُهُنَّ فَأَعْهَدُ إِلَى النَّاسِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ‏:‏ فَأَجْلَسْنَاهُ فِي مِخْضَبٍ لِحَفْصَةَ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ وَسَكَبْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ مِنْهُنَّ حَتَّى طَفِقَ يُشِيرُ إِلَيْنَا أَنْ قَدْ فَعَلْتُنَّ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ‏.‏


179 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī from ʿUrwa from ʿĀ’isha.  She said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said in his illness in which died: Pour water upon me from seven skin bottles, the mouths of which have not been untied (i.e. full of water), so that I may give advice to the people.  ʿĀ’isha said: So we seated him the tub of Ḥafṣa made of copper, and we poured the water on him from them until he started to indicate to us that we had done it, then he went out.


180- عَنْ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ‏:‏ نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَتَوَضَّأَ فِي النُّحَاسِ، وَأَنْ آتِيَ أَهْلِي فِي غُرَّةِ الْهِلاَلِ، وَإِذَا انْتَبَهْتُ مِنْ سِنَتِي لِلصَّلاَةِ أَنْ أَسْتَاكَ‏.‏  قَالَ‏:‏ قِيلَ لِي‏:‏ أَرَى أَنَّ قَوْلَهُ‏:‏ آتِي أَهْلِي فِي غُرَّةِ الْهِلاَلِ يُحَذِّرُ النَّاسَ ذَلِكَ فِي الْهِلاَلِ، وَفِي النِّصْفِ مِنْ أَجْلِ الشَّيْطَانِ‏.‏


180 – Ibn Jurayj said: I was informed of Muʿāwiya that he said: I have been prohibited from doing wuḍū in copper, and that I come unto my wife (i.e. have intercourse) in the start of the crescent.  And when I have awaken from my sleep for the prayer that I brush my teeth with the miswāk.

He said: It was said to me: I regard that his saying of “I come unto my wife in the start of the crescent” the people are warned of that in the crescent and in the half of the month due to Shayṭān.
