What has come regarding hide that has not been tanned

181 – Ibn Jurayj said: I heard ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Mulayka saying: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb used the privy in Ajyād, then he returned and asked for some wuḍū-water, and it was not given to him.  Umm Mahzūl said – and she is from the nine prostitutes who were in the Time of Ignorance: O Commander of the Believers, this is water but it is in an ʿulba (a bowl made of skin), and the ʿulba is the one which has not been tanned.  So ʿUmar said to Khālid b. Ṭuḥayl: It is?  He said: Yes.  So he said: Come, for God has made water a purifier.

182 – Ibn Jurayj said: A person asked ʿAṭā and said: I drink and I do wuḍū from water which is in a container that has not been tanned.  He said: Is it dhakī (i.e. was it Islamically slaughtered)?  He said: Yes, and it is not a dead animal.  He said: There is no harm with that.

183 – Isrā’īl from ʿĪsā b. Abī ʿIzza from ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī.  He said: The tanning of hides is their dhakāt.
