Wuḍū from the purification vessels

236 –Ibn Jurayj said: I asked ʿAṭā about the wudu that is in the gate of the masjid.   So he said: There is no harm with it.  It was in the time of Ibn ʿAbbās and he made it, and he had known that men and women, black and red, would do wuḍū from it, and he did not regard there to be harm with it.  And had there been harm, he would have prohibited it.  He said: Have you done wuḍū from it?  He said: Yes.

237 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: I saw a person exposed on the pool, scooping his hand upon his private.  He said: So he did wuḍū and it is not upon you.  Indeed the religion is lenient.  The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ used to say: Show leniency, leniency will be shown to you.  And those who were before you did not inquire into this, and did not insist in it – and did not insist in it – meaning investigate about it.

238 – ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Rawwād said: Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ reported to me that a man said: O Messenger of God, is a new covered jar more beloved to you to do wuḍū from, or is what the people do wuḍū from more beloved?  He said: The most beloved of religions to God is the Ḥanīfiyya.  It was said: And what is the Ḥanīfiyya?  He said: The lenient.  He said: The spacious Islam.

239 – al-Thawrī from Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb from al-Shaʿbī.  He said: Your purification vessels are more beloved to me than an old covered jar.

240 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm from Hamām b. al-Ḥārith.  He said: I saw Jarīr b. ʿAbdullāh doing wuḍū from a purification vessel.

241 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash.  He said: I heard from Ibrāhīm, he said: The companions of the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would do wuḍū from the hollowed out stone.

242 – al-Thawrī from Muzāḥim b. Zufra.  He said: I said to al-Shaʿbī: Is an old covered jug more beloved to you do to wuḍū from, or from this purification vessel in which the butcher inserts his hand?  He said: No, rather from this purification vessel in which the butcher inserts his hand.

243 – Maʿmar from a man from Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ from the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ likewise except that he did not mention the lenient Ḥanīfiyya.
