The well in which the riding animal fell

269 – Maʿmar said: I asked al-Zuhrī about a chicken that fell in a well and died.  So he said: There is no harm with doing wuḍū from it, and it being drunk, unless it has decayed until the scent of its decay is found in the water, in which case it is drained.

270 – Maʿmar said: I asked al-Zuhrī about a mouse that fell in the well.  So he said: If its place is taken out then there is no harm, and if it died in it it is drained.

271 – Maʿmar said: Someone who heard al-Ḥasan reported to me saying: When the riding animal has died in the well, it is taken from it.  And if it decomposed in it then it is drained.

272 – Maʿmar said: Someone reported to me who heard al-Ḥasan saying: When the riding animal has died in the well, forty bucketfuls are taken from it.

273 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad from his father that ʿAlī said: When the mouse has dropped in the well and been cut up, seven bucketfuls are drained from it.  So if the mouse was as its (original full) form, not cut up, a bucketful and two bucketfuls are drained from it.  So if it was a dead animal greater than that, then whatever removes the scent is drained from the well.

274 – Layth from ʿAṭā.  He said: When the dog has fallen into the well, and it was taken out of it when it fell, twenty bucketfuls are drained from it.  So if it was taken out when it had died, sixty or seventy bucketfuls are drained from it.  So if it had decayed in it, its water is drained, and if they are not able to do so, a hundred bucketfuls and a hundred and twenty are drained from it.

275 – Maʿmar said: A man fell into Zamzam and died in it, so Ibn ʿAbbās commanded for its springs to be blocked up and for it to be drained.  It was said to him: There is a spring in it that has overcome us.  He said: It is from the Garden, so he gave them a silk muṭraf (a type of garment) and they stuffed it in it.  Then its water was drained until there did not remain any stink in it.

276 – al-Thawrī from Mujāhid and ʿAṭā regarding a mouse that fell in a well, and (dough) is kneaded from its water.  He said: The chickens are fed (it).
