The mouse that dies in tallow

278 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī from Ibn al-Musayyib from Abū Hurayra.  He said: The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ was asked about the mouse that falls in the cooking oil (or: butter).  He said: If it was solid then discard what is around it, and if it was liquid then do not approach it.

279 – ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: And Maʿmar also used to mention it from al-Zuhrī from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtba from Ibn ʿAbbās from Maymuna, and thus did Ibn ʿUyayna report it to us.

280 – Maʿmar from Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī similarly to this.

Abu Hārūn said: We said to Abū Saʿīd: Does one make use of it?  He said: Yes.

281 – Maʿmar from Abū Hārūn from Abū Saʿīd.  He said: Make use of it but do not eat it.

282 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Sharīk b. Abī Namir from ʿAṭā b. Yasār.  He said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ was asked about the mouse that falls in the cooking fat (or: butter).  He said: If it was solid then one takes what is around it of the quantity of the palm and eats the rest.

283 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Abū Jābir al-Bayāḍī from Ibn al-Musayyib.  He said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ was asked about the mouse that falls in cooking fat (or: butter).  He said: If it was solid one takes what is around it of the quantity of the palm, and if it fell in the oil it is used for lighting the lamp.

284 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: A mouse that falls in solid or non-solid tallow.  He said: It has reached us that if the tallow was solid, one takes what is around it and discards it, and eats what remains.  I said: So the non-solid tallow?  He said: Nothing has reached us regarding it, however I regard one lights the lamp with it and it is not eaten.

285 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAmr b. Dīnār.  He said: When the mouse has died in the solid tallow.  He said: It has reached us that if it is solid, whatever is around it is taken and discarded and one eats what remains.

286 – Maʿmar and al-Thawrī from Ayyūb from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar: Any mouse that fell in an oil of twenty baskets (?).  So Ibn ʿUmar said: Light the lamp with it and anoint the canopies with it.

287 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAmr b. Dīnār: A mouse died in the ointment of a person who anoints with it.  He said: I do not like it.

288 – Ibn Jurayj said: I asked ʿAṭā about a mouse that died in honey.  He said: As to honey that is in a solid form, what is around it is scooped up and what remains is eaten.

289 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā.  He said: I said to him: A mouse that dies in melted butter or ointment, and it is found that its skin has become stripped off, or it is found that it had died and it is severe without its skin having become stripped off.  He said: It is equal that it died in it, the ointment is boiled and one anoints with it if it had not become dirty.  I said: So the butter is boiled and heated then it is eaten?  He said: What is eaten is not like the form of something in the head which is anointed with.
