Wuḍū from seawater

318 – Maʿmar from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr from a man of the Anṣār from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ.  He said: Two waters which do not cleanse from janāba: seawater and the water of the ḥammām.

Maʿmar said: I asked Yaḥyā about it after a while, so he said: What is more reliable than that has reached me, that the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ was asked about seawater, so he said: Seawater is a purifier, and its dead animal is lawful.

319 – Ibn Jurayj said: Sulaymān b. Mūsā reported to me.  He said: The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: The sea, its water is a purifier and its dead animal is lawful.

320 – al-Thawrī from Abān from Anas from the Prophet

321 – al-Thawrī and Ibn ʿUyayna from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd from al-Mughīra b. ʿAbdullāh that some people from the Banū Mudlij asked the Messenger of God We ride rafts of ours, and one of us carries a muhayh (a container with freshwater?) for its healing.  So if we do wuḍū with the seawater we find (doubt) in ourselves (regarding its validity), and if we do wuḍū from it (the freshwater) we thirst.

So the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: Its water is a purifier, its dead animal is lawful.

322 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Abū Yazīd al-Madanī.  He said: A man from the hunters who are in the neighborhood narrated to me, and the people of Medina were given sustenance from the neighborhood.  So he found a scattered grain, and ʿUmar set about collecting it until he collected a mudd (a unit of measure) from it, or close to a mudd.

Then he said: Why do I not see you doing like this, while this is the nourishment of a Muslim man until the night.

He said: I said to him: O Commander of the Believers, will you to mount to observe how we hunt?

He said: So he mounted with them and set about hunting.

So ʿUmar said: By God, I have seen as today a more goodly earning, or he said: a more lawful.

Then he said: So we made some food for him, and I said: O Commander of the Believers, if you wish will give you a food to drink, and if you want (we will give you) some water, for milk is easier (to obtain) among us than water.  We draw sweet water from such a place.

He said: So he ate, then he called for what he wanted.

Then we said: O Commander of the Believers, we will go out to here and furnish ourselves with provisions of the water for our healing, then we will do wuḍū from the seawater.

So he said: Glorified by God!  And which water is purer than seawater?

323 – Ibn al-Taymī from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhā from ʿIkrima that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was asked about seawater.  So he said: Which water is purer than seawater?

324 – Maʿmar from Qatāda: Ibn ʿAbbās said: They are two seas “this one fresh, sweet, that one salty, bitter” (25:53).

325 – Ibn Jurayj said: Sulaymān b. Mūsā asked ʿAṭā while I was listening: Is seawater a purifier?  So he said: Yes.

326 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Do you regard that if I found water other than seawater and the iḍā and I saw a well, I leave the well and the iḍā?

He said: If you had purified yourself from them then they are a purifier.

I said to him: What is the iḍā?

He said: The vessel for purification (al-miṭhara).

327 – al-Thawrī from al-Zubayr b. ʿAdī.  He said: I asked Ibrāhīm about seawater, can I do ghusl with it?  He said: Yes, but freshwater is preferable to me.

328 – Maʿmar and Ibn Jurayj.  They said: Ibn Ṭāwūs reported to us from his father that a man said to him: I passed by the sea while I was junub, so I did ghusl from it.

He said: It sufficed you.
