The remaining drink (su'r) of the cat

340- عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ سُؤْرَ السِّنَّوْرِ‏.‏


340 – ʿAbdullāh b ʿUmar from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar that he used to dislike the su’r of the feline.

Translator's note: The su'r is the remainder of a drink after someone/something has drunken from it.


341- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، مِثْلَهُ‏.‏


341 – al-Thawrī from ʿUbaydullāh from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar likewise.


342- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ‏:‏ الْهِرُّ‏؟‏ قَالَ‏:‏ هُوَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْكَلْبِ، أَوْ شَرٌّ مِنْهُ‏.‏


342 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: The cat?  He said: It is has the status of the dog or worse than it.


343- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ طَاوُوسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، فِي الْهِرِّ يَلَغُ فِي الإِنَاءِ قَالَ‏:‏ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْكَلْبِ يُغْسَلُ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ‏.‏


343 – Maʿmar from Ibn Ṭāwūs from his father regarding the cat lapping in the vessel.  He said: It has the status of the dog, being washed seven times.


344- أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ فِي الْهِرِّ يَلَغُ فِي الإِنَاءِ قَالَ‏:‏ اغْسِلْهُ مَرَّةً وَأَهْرِقْهُ‏.‏


344 – Maʿmar reported to us from Ayyūb from Ibn Sīrīn from Abū Hurayra regarding the cat lapping in the vessel.  He said: Wash it once and pour it out.


345- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ‏:‏ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنِ الْهِرِّ يَلَغُ فِي الإِنَاءِ قَالَ‏:‏ يُغْسَلُ مَرَّةً، أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ، وَكَانَ الْحَسَنُ يَقُولُ‏:‏ مَرَّةً، أَوْ ثَلاَثًا‏.‏


345 – Maʿmar from Qatāda.  He said: I asked Ibn al-Musayyib about the cat lapping in the vessel.  He said: It is washed once or twice.  And al-Ḥasan used to say: Once or thrice.


346- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى أَبَا قَتَادَةَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ يُصْغِي الإِنَاءَ لِلْهِرِّ فَتَشْرَبُ مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ بِفَضْلِهَا‏.‏


346 – Maʿmar from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr from ʿIkrima that he saw Abū Qatāda al-Anṣārī inclining the vessel for the cat, so it drank from it, then he did wuḍū with its leftover.


347- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، مِثْلَهُ‏.‏


347 – al-Thawrī from Khalid al-Hadhdha from ʿIkrima likewise.


348- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، وَابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ السِّخْتِيَانِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عِكْرِمَةَ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ‏:‏ قَرَّبَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ إِنَاءً إِلَى الْهِرِّ فَوَلَغَ فِيهِ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ، وَقَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّهَا مِنْ مَتَاعِ الْبَيْتِ‏.‏


348 – Maʿmar and Ibn Jurayj from Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī that he heard ʿIkrima the client of Ibn ʿAbbās saying: Abu Qatāda drew a vessel near to the cat and he lapped in it.  Then he did wuḍū from its leftover, and he said: It is only from the chattel of the house.


349- مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، مِثْلَهُ‏.‏


349 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from ʿIkrima likewise.


350- عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ‏:‏ أَخْبَرَنِي صَالِحٌ، مَوْلَى التَّوْأَمَةِ، قَالَ‏:‏ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ يَقُولُ‏:‏ لاَ بَأْسَ بِالْوُضُوءِ مِنْ فَضْلِ الْهِرَّةِ إِنَّمَا هُوَ مِنْ عِيَالِي‏.‏


350 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad said: Ṣāliḥ the client of Taw’ama said: I heard Abū Qatāda saying: There is no harm with wuḍū from the leftover of the cat, it is only from my household.


351- عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ، عَنْ أُمِّهَا، وَكَانَتْ عِنْدَ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ مِثْلَ حَدِيثِ مَالِكٍ‏.‏


351 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Ṭalḥa from a woman from her mother – and she was with Abu Qatāda – the like of the hadith of Mālik.


352- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ، عَنْ أُمِّهَا، وَكَانَتْ تَحْتَ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ، أَنَّ أُمَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْهَا، أَنَّ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ زَارَهُمْ فَسَكَبُوا لَهُ وَضُوءًا فَدَنَتْ مِنْهُ هِرَّةٌ فَأَصْغَى إِلَيْهَا الإِنَاءَ الَّذِي فِيهِ، وَضُوؤُهُ فَشَرِبَتْ مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ بِفَضْلِهَا فَعَجِبُوا مِنْ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ‏:‏ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ‏:‏ إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِنَجَسٍ، إِنَّهَا مِنَ الطَّوَّافِينَ عَلَيْكُمْ‏.‏


352 – Ibn Jurayj from Hishām b. ʿUrwa from Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh from a woman from her mother – and she was under Abu Qatāda – that her mother reported to her that Abu Qatāda visited them.  They poured wuḍū water for him, and a cat approached him.  He inclined the vessel in which was his wuḍū water to it, and it drank from it.  Then he did wuḍū with its leftover, so they wondered at that.  

Abu Qatāda said: Indeed I heard the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: It is not impure (najis).  It is from those who peddle from you (al-tawwāfīn ʿalaykum).


353- عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدَةَ بِنْتِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ، عَنْ كَبْشَةَ بِنْتِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، وَكَانَتْ عِنْدَ ابْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ، أَنَّ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا فَسَكَبَتْ لَهُ وَضُوءًا فَجَاءَتْ هِرَّةٌ فَشَرِبَتْ، فَأَصْغَى لَهَا الإِنَاءَ حَتَّى تَشْرَبَ قَالَتْ كَبْشَةُ‏:‏ فَرَآنِي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ‏:‏ أَتَعْجَبِينَ يَا بِنْتَ أَخِي‏؟‏ قَالَتْ‏:‏ نَعَمْ‏.‏ قَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِنَجَسٍ إِنَّمَا هِيَ مِنَ الطَّوَّافِينَ وَالطَّوَّافَاتِ‏.‏


353 – Mālik b. Anas from Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Ṭalḥa from Ḥumayda bt. ʿUbayd b. Rifāʿa from Kabsha bt. Kaʿb b. Mālik – and she was with Abu Qatāda – that Abu Qatāda entered upon her, so she poured wuḍū water for him.  A cat came and drank, and he inclined the vessel for it so that it would drink.  

Kabsha said: He saw me looking at him, and he said: Do you wonder, O daughter of my brother?  

She said: Yes.  

He said: Indeed the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم said: It is not impure, it is only from the male and female peddlers.


354- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ‏:‏ وَلَغَ هِرٌ فِي لَبَنٍ لآلِ أَبِي قَيْسٍ فَأَرَادَ أَهْلُهُ أَنْ يُهْرِقُوا اللَّبَنَ فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَشْرَبُوهُ‏.‏


354 – Maʿmar from Abu Isḥāq.  He said: A cat lapped in some milk of the family of Abū Qays, so his family wanted to pour out the milk.  So he prohibited them from that and commanded them to drink it.


355- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ مَوْلًى، لِلأَنْصَارِ، أَنَّ جَدَّتَهُ أَخْبَرَتْهُ، أَنَّ مَوْلاَتَهَا أَرْسَلَتْهَا بِجَشِيشٍ، أَوْ رُزٍّ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ تُهْدِيهِ فَجَاءَتْ بِهِ وَعَائِشَةُ تُصَلِّي فَوَضَعَتْهُ فَدَنَتْ مِنْهُ هِرَّةٌ فَأَكَلَتْ مِنْهُ، وَعِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ نِسَاءٌ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَتْ دَعَتْ بِهِ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ النِّسْوَةَ يَتَوَقَّيْنَ الْمَكَانَ الَّذِي أَكَلَتْ مِنْهُ الْهِرَّةُ، وَضَعَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا يَدَهَا فِي الْمَكَانَ الَّذِي أَكَلَتْ فِيهِ الْهِرَّةُ وَقَالَتْ‏:‏ أَنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِنَجَسٍ‏.‏


355 – Jurayj from Hishām b. ʿUrwa from a client of the Anṣār that his grandmother informed him that her master sent her with some coarsely ground wheat or some rice to ʿĀ’isha gifting it.  So she brought it while ʿĀ’isha was praying.  She set it down, and a cat approached it and ate from it.  And there were women with ʿĀ’isha, so when she departed (from her prayer) she requested it.  When she saw the women avoiding the place from which the cat ate, ʿĀ’isha رضي الله عنها put her hand in the place in which the cat had ate, and she said: It is not impure.


356- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الرِّجَالِ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ‏:‏ كُنْتُ أَتَوَضَّأُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ قَدْ أَصَابَ مِنْهُ الْهِرُّ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ‏.‏


356 – al-Thawrī from Ḥāritha b. Abī al-Rijāl from ʿAmra from ʿĀ’isha.  She said: I and the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do wuḍū from a vessel from which the cat had come in contact prior to that.


357- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنِ الرُّكَيْنِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ عُمَيْلَةَ الْفَزَارِيِّ، عَنْ عَمَّةٍ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهَا صَفِيَّةُ بِنْتُ عَمِيلَةَ، عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً سَأَلَتْ عَنِ السِّنَّوْرِ يَلَغُ فِي شَرَابِي، فَقَالَ‏:‏ الْهِرُّ‏؟‏ فَقَالَتْ‏:‏ نَعَمْ قَالَ‏:‏ فَلاَ تُهْرِقِي شَرَابَكِ وَلاَ طَهُورَكِ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يُنَجِّسُ شَيْئًا‏.‏


357 – al-Thawrī from al-Rukayn b. ʿUmayla al-Fazārī from an aunt of his who is called Ṣafiyya bt. ʿAmīla from Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī that a woman asked about the feline lapping in my drink.  

He said: The cat?  

She said: Yes.  

He said: Do not pour out your drink or your purification, for it does not make anything impure.


358- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، وَأَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ الْهِرُّ مِنْ مَتَاعِ الْبَيْتِ‏.‏


358 – Maʿmar from Qatāda and Ayyūb from ʿIkrima from Ibn ʿAbbās.  He said: The cat is from the chattel of the house.


359- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، قَالَ‏:‏ سُئِلَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ وُلُوغِ الْهِرِّ فِي الإِنَاءِ أَيُغْسَلُ‏؟‏ قَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّمَا هُوَ مِنْ مَتَاعِ الْبَيْتِ‏.‏


359 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAmr b. Dīnār from ʿIkrima. He said: Ibn ʿAbbās was asked about the lapping of the cat in the vessel, is it washed?  

He said: It is only from the chattel of the house.


360- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ‏:‏ السِّنَّوْرُ مِنْ مَتَاعِ الْبَيْتِ‏.‏


360 – al-Thawrī from al-Ḥasan b. ʿUbaydullāh from Ibrāhīm.  He said: The cat is from the chattel of the house.
