The wiping of the ears

23 – Ibn Jurayj said: Sulaymān b. Mūsā narrated to me that the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The ears are from the head.

24 – ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar.  He said: The ears are from the head.

25 – al-Thawrī from Abī al-Naḍr from Saʿīd b. Marjāna from Ibn ʿUmar likewise.

26 – Ibn Jurayj said: Nāfiʿ reported to me that Ibn ʿUmar would wash the outsides of his ears and their insides except for the ear hole with the face once or twice.  After he wiped his head he inserted his two fingers in the water, then he inserted them in the ear hole once.

And he said: So I saw him when he was dying, doing wuḍū then inserting his two fingers in the water.  So he set about wanting to insert them in his ear hole while they were not rightly guided and he was not reaching it, until I inserted my two fingers in the water and inserted them in his ear hole.

27 – ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥarrar from Yazīd b. al-Aṣamm from Abū Hurayra.  He said: The ears are from the head.

28 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī from Sālim.  He said: We would do wuḍū with Ibn ʿUmar while he was sick, so he would command us to wipe his ears upon what he would wipe.

He said: And Ayyūb reported to me from Nāfiʿ.  He said: So once we forgot to wipe his ears, so he set about drawing his hands near his ears, not able to reach his ears and we did not know what he wanted, until we noticed after, so we wiped them and he calmed down.

33 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā.  He said: Follow the insides of the ears with your fingers, washing them with the leftover water of your face when you have scooped upon your face.  I said: How do you regard if I delayed their wiping until I wiped them with the head?  He said: It does not harm you.

37 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Ḥusayn b. ʿAbdullāh from ʿIkrima from Ibn ʿAbbās.  He said: The ears are not from the face, and they are not from the head.  Were they from the head it would behoove to shave what is upon them of hair (i.e. in hajj).  And were they from the face it would behoove to wash their outsides and their insides with the face.
