Touching the cross

461 – Ibn ʿUyayna from ʿAmmār al-Duhnī from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī or someone else that ʿAlī sought the repentance of al-Mustawrid al-ʿIjlī while he wanted to pray.

He said: And I ask help from God against you.

So he said: And I ask help from the Messiah against you.

He said: So ʿAlī dropped his hand to his neck and lo there was a cross, so he cut it off.  When he entered into the prayer, he brought forward a man and left.  Then he informed the people that he had not brought that about due to a ḥadath (something that breaks the wuḍū), rather he had touched these impure things and preferred to bring about a wuḍū from it.
