Wuḍū from the kiss, the touch, and skin-to-skin contact

496- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، كَانَ يَقُولُ‏:‏ مَنْ قَبَّلَ امْرَأَتَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى وُضُوءٍ أَعَادَ الْوُضُوءَ‏.‏


496 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī from Sālim that Ibn ʿUmar used to say: (If) someone kisses his wife while he has a wuḍū, he repeats the wuḍū.


497- عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْقُبْلَةِ قَالَ‏:‏ مِنْهَا الْوُضُوءُ وَهِيَ مِنَ اللَّمْسِ‏.‏


497 – ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar that he was asked about the kiss.  He said: The wuḍū is from it and it from the touch.


498- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ، وَقَدْ تَوَضَّأَ فَيَلْقَى بَعْضَ وَلَدِهِ فَيُقَبِّلُهُ، ثُمَّ يَدْعُو بِمَاءٍ فَيُمَصْمِصُ، وَلاَ يَزِيدُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ‏.‏

قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ‏:‏ الْمَصْمَصَةُ دُونَ الْمَضْمَضَةِ‏.‏


498 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Nāfiʿ.  He said: Ibn ʿUmar used to go out to the prayer while he had done wuḍū, so he would meet one of his children, then call for some water and he rinsed his mouth (fa-yumaṣmiṣu), and he did not do more than that.

Maʿmar said: Rinsing (al-maṣmaṣa) less than the mouth-rinsing (al-maḍmaḍa).

Translator’s note: The two words can be taken as synonyms, however it would appear Maʿmar here understands it to be less than the latter.


499- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ، أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ‏:‏ يَتَوَضَّأُ الرَّجُلُ مِنَ الْمُبَاشَرَةِ، وَمِنَ اللَّمْسِ بِيَدِهِ، وَمِنَ الْقُبْلَةِ إِذَا قَبَّلَ امْرَأَتَهُ، وَكَانَ يَقُولُ فِي هَذِهِ الآيَةِ‏:‏ ‏{‏أَوْ لاَمَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ‏}‏، قَالَ‏:‏ هُوَ الْغَمْزُ‏.‏


499 – Maʿmar from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm from Abū ʿUbayda that Ibn Masʿūd said: The man does wuḍū from skin-to-skin contact and from touching with his hand, and from the kiss when he kisses his wife.

And he used to say regarding this verse “or you have touched women” He said: It is the squeezing.


500- عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ‏:‏ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ‏:‏ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ‏:‏ الْقُبْلَةُ مِنَ اللَّمْسِ وَمِنْهَا الْوُضُوءُ‏.‏


500 – Ibn ʿUyayna from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm.  He said: I heard Abū ʿUbayda b. ʿAbdullāh saying: Ibn Masʿūd said: The kiss is from the touch, and from it is the wuḍū.


501- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ مُحِلٍّ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ‏:‏ إِذَا قَبَّلَ الرَّجُلُ بِشَهْوَةٍ، أَوْ لَمَسَ بِشَهْوَةٍ فَعَلَيْهِ الْوُضُوءُ‏.‏


501 – al-Thawrī from Muḥill from Ibrāhīm.  He said: When the man has kissed with lust or touched with lust then it is upon him (to do) the wuḍū.


502- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، قَالَ‏:‏ إِذَا قَبَّلَ فَعَلَيْهِ الْوُضُوءُ‏.‏


502 – al-Thawrī from ʿAṭā b. al-Sā’ib from al-Shaʿbī.  He said: When one has kissed then it is upon him (to do) the wuḍū.


503- عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَبِيْدَةَ قَالَ‏:‏ الْمُلاَمَسَةُ بِالْيَدِ قَالَ‏:‏ وَمِنْهَا الْوُضُوءُ وَالتَّيَمُّمُ إِذَا لَمْ يَجِدْ مَاءً‏.‏


503 – Hishām from Muḥammad from ʿAbīda.  He said: Touching is by the hand.  He said: The wuḍū (is done) from it, and the tayammum if one cannot find water.


504- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ، مِثْلَهُ‏.‏ قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ‏:‏ وَكَانَ قَتَادَةُ يَقُولُ‏:‏ الْوُضُوءُ مِنَ الْقُبْلَةِ‏.‏ حَسِبْتُهُ ذَكَرَهُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ‏.‏


504 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Ibn Sīrīn from ʿAbīda likewise.

Maʿmar said: And Qatāda used to say: The wuḍū (is done) from the kiss.  I think he mentioned it from Ibn al-Musayyib.


505- عَنِ ابْنِ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ مَا أُبَالِي قَبَّلْتُهَا، أَوْ شَمَمْتُ رَيْحَانًا‏.‏


505 – Ibn Mujāhid from his father from Ibn ʿAbbās.  He said: I do not care whether I kiss her or smell a sweet basil.


506- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ عُمَيْرٍ، وَسَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ، وَعَطَاءَ بْنَ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ اخْتَلَفُوا فِي الْمُلاَمَسَةِ، قَالَ سَعِيدٌ وَعَطَاءٌ‏:‏ هُوَ اللَّمْسُ وَالْغَمْزُ‏.‏ وَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ‏:‏ هُوَ النِّكَاحُ‏.‏ فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُمْ كَذَلِكَ فَسَأَلُوهُ، وَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِمَا قَالُوا‏:‏ فَقَالَ‏:‏ أَخْطَأَ الْمَوْلِيَانِ، وَأَصَابَ الْعَرَبِيُّ، وَهُوَ الْجِمَاعُ، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعِفُّ وَيَكْنِي‏.‏


506 – Maʿmar from Qatāda that ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr and Saʿīd b. Jubayr and ʿAṭā b. Abī Rabāḥ disagreed regarding touching. 

Saʿīd and ʿAṭā said: It is the touch and the squeeze.  

And ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr said: It is intercourse.  

Ibn ʿAbbās came upon them while they were thus, so they asked him and informed him of what they said.  He said: The two mawālī has erred and the ʿArab is correct, and it is sex, however God is decent and He alludes.


507- عَنِ ابْنِ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ‏:‏ حُدِّثْتُ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ‏:‏ مَا أُبَالِي قَبَّلْتُهَا، أَوْ شَمَمْتُ رَيْحَانًا‏.‏

قَالَ‏:‏ وَكَانَ ابْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَابْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ، يَقُولاَنِ‏:‏ مِنَ الْقُبْلَةِ الْوُضُوءُ‏.‏


507 – Ibn Mujāhid, he said: I was narrated to from Mujāhid.  He said: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās saying: I do not care whether I kiss her or smell a sweet basil.

He said: And Ibn Saʿīd and Ibn al-Musayyab used to say: The wuḍū (is done) from the kiss.


508- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، خَرَجَ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ فَقَبَّلَتْهُ امْرَأَتُهُ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ‏.‏


508 – Ibn Jurayj from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb went out to the prayer and his wife kissed him.  So he prayed and he had not done wuḍū.


509- عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ قَالَ‏:‏ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ، سَمَّاهَا أَنَّهَا، سَمِعَتْ عَائِشَةَ، تَقُولُ‏:‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَتَوَضَّأُ، وَكَانَ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ فَيُقَبِّلُنِي، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي فَمَا يُحْدِثُ وُضُوءًا‏.‏


509 – al-Awzāʿī said: ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb reported to me from a woman who he named, that she had heard ʿĀ’isha saying: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ used to do wuḍū, and he would go out to the prayer and kiss me, then he would pray and not bring about a wuḍū.


510- عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ بُنَانَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ‏:‏ قَبَّلَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى وَلَمْ يُحْدِثْ وُضُوءًا‏.‏


510 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Maʿbad b. Bunāna from Muḥammad b. ʿAmr from ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr from ʿĀ’isha.  She said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ kissed me, then he prayed and he did not bring about a wuḍū.


511- عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي رَوْقٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، كَانَ يُقَبِّلُ بَعْدَ الْوُضُوءِ، وَلاَ يُعِيدُ، أَوْ قَالَتْ‏:‏ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي‏.‏


511 – al-Thawrī from Abū Rawq from Ibrāhīm al-Taymī from ʿĀ’isha that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ used to kiss after the wuḍū, and he would not repeat (the wuḍū), or she said: Then he would pray.


512- عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عَاتِكَةَ بِنْتَ زَيْدٍ، قَبَّلَتْ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ، فَلَمْ يَنْهَهَا قَالَ‏:‏ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ الصَّلاَةَ، ثُمَّ مَضَى فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ‏.‏


512 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd from Abu Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar that ʿĀtika bt. Zayd kissed ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb while he was fasting and he did not forbid her.  He said: And he wanted to pray, then he left and prayed and did not do wuḍū


513- عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ‏:‏ لَيْسَ فِي الْقُبْلَةِ وُضُوءٌ‏.‏


513 – Maʿmar from ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd from al-Ḥasan.  He said: There is no wuḍū in the kiss.


514- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ‏:‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فِي الصَّلاَةِ‏:‏ فَقَبَضَ عَلَى قَدَمِ عَائِشَةَ غَيْرَ مُتَلَذِّذٍ‏.‏


514 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAbd al-Karīm that he heard al-Ḥasan saying: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said while he was sitting in the masjid in the prayer: He seized the foot of ʿĀ’isha without taking delight.


515- عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ حُدِّثْتُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّمَا هِيَ رَيْحَانَتُكَ‏.‏


515 – Ibn Jurayj said: I was narrated to that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: She is only your sweet basil.
