Wiping on bandages and wounds

616 – Abū Saʿīd Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ziyād b. Bishr reported to us in Mecca.  He said: Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Dabarī narrated to us.  He said: We read to me (?) from Ibn Jurayj.  He said: I said to ʿAṭā: A sore that is in my forearm.

He said: Do not draw near it and make it touch the water.

I said: (How) do you regard that if there is some blood and pus around the wound, but it has stuck to the lip of the wound.

He said: Follow it with a ṣūfa (a piece of wool with medication on it) or a kursufa (a cotton with medication on it) in which there is some water and wash it.

I said: So there is no permission for me to not touch it and not clean it?

He said: Do not pray while you have blood on you.

617 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: A sore in my forearm, (how) do you regard if the mouth of the wound is open?

He said: Do not insert your hand in it, and wipe what is around it with the water.

618 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: A man with a broken arm (or: hand) that is bandaged.

He said: He wipes the bandage alone and it is enough for him.  He said: There is no way out from wiping the bandage, the bandage of his arm is only of the status of his arm, he wipes upon the bandage with a wiping.  And if he missed something from it then there is no harm.

619 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Do you regard that if there was a bandage on the boil of the arm of a man, or a slight sore, that he wipe upon the bandage or remove it?

He said: If it was slight then I prefer for him to remove the bandages.

620 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā regarding the broken hand and foot and every severe thing, when it is bandaged then God is worthiest of excusing, so one is to wipe the bandages.

624 – al-Thawrī from Salama b. Kuhayl: I struck a camel of mine and I injured the skin of my head myself.  So I asked Saʿīd b. Jubayr and he said: Wash what is around it and to not bring the water near it.

Sulaymān reported to us.  He said: I entered upon Abū al-ʿĀliya al-Riyāḥī and he was in pain, so they did wuḍū for him.  So when one of his feet was left, he said: Wipe on this one for it is ill, and there was a redness with it.  And redness is the swelling (or: the tumor).
