Wiping upon the khuffs

746 – Maʿmar from Yaḥyā b. Abī Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from ʿAmr b. Umayya al-Ḍamarī.  He said: I saw the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ wiping upon his khuffs.

747 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī that al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba said: I was with the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ in a journey, and when he was in part of the road he fell behind and I fell behind with him with the idāwa (a receptacle for holding water for wuḍū).  He relieved himself, then came to me and I poured upon him hands.  That was during the prayer of the morning.

So when he washed his face and wanted to wash his arms, he tightened the sleeve of his jubba (a long outer garment), and he had a Syrian jubba on him.  He took out his hands from under the jubba, and he washed his arms.  Then he did wuḍū on his khuffs.

He said: Then we ended up to the group, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf had prayed a rakʿa with them, so I left to prevent him.

He said: Leave him.

Then he departed.  The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ rose and prayed a rakʿa, and the people were alarmed by that.

He said: You have done correctly – or he said: You have done well.

748 – Ibn Jurayj reported to us.  He said: Ibn Shihāb narrated to me from ʿAbbād b. Ziyād that ʿUrwa b. al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba reported to him that al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba reported to him that he raided the raid of Tabūk with the Messenger of God

He said: The Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ relieved himself by the privy, and I bore an idāwa with him before the dawn prayer.  When the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم returned to me, I set about pouring upon his hands from the idāwa.  He washed his hands three times, then he rinsed his mouth and rinsed his nose and washed his face.  Then went taking out his jubba from his arms, and he tightened the sleeve of his jubba, and inserted his hands in the jubba until he brought out his arms from the bottom of the jubba.  Then he washed his arms up to the elbows, then he did wuḍū upon his khuffs.

Then he approached and I approached with him until he found the people had brought forward ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf (as prayer leader).  The Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم reached one of the two rakʿat, and he prayed with the people the last rakʿa.  So when ʿAbd al-Raḥmān did taslīm, the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم rose, completing his prayer.  That alarmed the Muslims, so they did much glorification (of God).

When the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم had carried out his prayer, he approached them then said: You have done well – or he said: You have done correctly – envying (?) them that they had prayed the prayer in its time.

Ibn Shihāb said: Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad b. Saʿd narrated to me from Ḥamza b. al-Mughīra the like of the narration of ʿAbbād b. Ziyād.  al-Mughīra said: I wanted to make ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf go back (i.e. from leading the prayer), so the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: Leave him.

749 – Ibn ʿUyayna, he said: I heard Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad b. Saʿd saying: Ḥamza b. al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba narrated to me.  He said: I was with the Messenger of God Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad b. Saʿd in a journey.  So he said: Fall back, O Mughīra, and continue, O people.

He said: Then went and fulfilled his need, then I followed him with an idāwa of water.  When he finished, I poured upon him from it.  He washed his face, then he went about taking out his hand from a Roman jubba that was on him.  He tightened the sleeve of the jubba, and took out his hands from underneath the jubba and he washed them.  Then he wiped upon his khuffs, then he prayed.

750 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash form Abū al-Ḍuḥā from al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba.  He said: I was with the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ in a journey.  He carried out the need, then I came with an idāwa of water.  He had a Syrian jubba on him, and he was not able to take out his hand from its sleeve.  So he took out his hand from under it.  Then he did wuḍū upon his khuffs.

751 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash from Abū Wā’il from Ḥudhayfa b. al-Yamān.  He said: I was with the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and he urinated standing on the subāṭa of a group – meaning the kunāsa (both words means a place of sweepings).  Then he went aside and I brought him some water.  So he did wuḍū and wiped upon his khuffs.

752 – Yaḥyā b. Rabīʿa said: I asked ʿAṭā about wiping upon the khuffs.  So he said: Three (days) for the traveler, and a day for the resident.

753 – al-Thawrī said: Wipe upon it so long as your foot clings to it.  And were the khuffs of the Muhājirīn and the Anṣār not but torn, cracked, patched?

754 – Maʿmar said: When something has gone out from you from the places of the wuḍū, then do not wipe.

755 – Isrā’īl b. Yūnus from ʿĪsā b. Abī ʿAzza from ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī.  He said: Someone who heard ʿAlī reported to me, and he was asked about wiping on the khuffs.

So he said: Yes, and upon the sandals, and upon the headdress.

756 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm form Hammām b. al-Ḥārith.  He said: I saw Jarīr, he urinated then he wiped upon his khuffs.  So it was spoken to him about, so he said: I saw the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ do that.

Ibrāhīm said: And they used to regard that wiping was after (the revelation of sūra) al-Mā’ida, for Jarīr was the last of them (in accepting) Islam.

757 – Ibn ʿUyayna from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm from Hammām b. al-Ḥārith.  He said: I saw Jarīr doing wuḍū from a purification vessel in the masjid, and he wiped upon his khuffs.  It spoken to him about that, so he said: And what would prevent me, for I had seen the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ doing it.

Ibrāhīm said: So this narration used to astonish the companions of ʿAbdullāh, for the Islam of Jarīr was after al-Mā’ida was sent down.

758 – Muḥammad b. Rāshid from ʿAbd al-Karīm Abū Umayyad that Jarīr b. ʿAbdullāh said: I saw the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ wiping upon the khuffs.  Jarīr said: And my Islam was after al-Mā’ida was sent down.

759 – Yāsīn from Ḥammād b. Abī Sulaymān from Ribʿī b. Ḥirāsh from Jarīr b. ʿAbdullāh.  He said: I gave wuḍū to the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, and he wiped upon his khuffs after al-Mā’ida was sent down.

760 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī from Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān that Ibn ʿUmar saw Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ wiping upon his khuffs.  So ʿAbdullāh denied that.

Saʿd said: ʿAbdullāh disapproved of me wiping upon my khuffs.

So ʿUmar said: It aught not to create doubt within the self of the Muslim man that he do wuḍū upon his khuffs, even if he has come from defecation (or: the privy).

761 – Maʿmar from Abū Isḥāq from Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān that ʿUmar said to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar: Your uncle is more knowledgeable than me – meaning Saʿd: When you have inserted your feet in the khuffs, and they are pure, then wipe upon them, even if you have come from defecation.

762 – Ibn Jurayj, he said: Nāfiʿ reported to me from Ibn ʿUmar.  He said: I disapproved of Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ while he was the commander of Kufa regarding wiping on the khuffs.

So he said: And is there a harm in that against me?

And he was a resident in Kufa.  So ʿAbdullāh said: When he said that, I recognized that he knows something about that that I do not know, so I did not retort with anything to him.

Then we met with ʿUmar, and Saʿd said: I sought a ruling from your father in what you disapproved of from me regarding the state of the khuffs.

So I said: Do you regard for there to be harm in that for any one of us when we do wuḍū and in our feet there are khuffs, that we wipe upon them?

Ibn Jurayj said: And Abū al-Zubayr told me more.  He said: I heard Ibn ʿUmar narrating the like of the narration of Nāfiʿ to me and he added from ʿUmar: When you have inserted your feet in them while they are pure.

763 – ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from Nāfiʿ.  He said: Ibn ʿUmar came to Saʿd b. Mālik, and he saw him wiping upon his khuffs.  So Ibn ʿUmar said: Are you indeed doing this?

Saʿd said: Yes.

So they gathered with ʿUmar, and Saʿd said: O Commander of the Believers, rule for my nephew regarding wiping upon the khuffs.

So ʿUmar said: We were – while we were with our Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – wiping upon our khuffs, not regarding there to be any harm with that.

Ibn ʿUmar said: Even if one came from defecation and urination?

So ʿUmar said: Yes, even if one came from defecation and urination.

Nāfiʿ said: So after that Ibn ʿUmar would wipe upon them so long as he had not taken them off, and he would not set a time for them.

769 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb from Ibn Sīrīn that Abu Ayyūb al-Anṣārī used to rule for wiping upon the khuffs, but he would not wipe.  It was spoken about to him, so he said: Do you see me ruling something for you whose unalloyed gratification is for you while its sin is upon me?  Rather, purification has been made beloved to me.

772 – Ibn Jurayj said: I asked ʿAṭā about wiping on the khuffs.  So he said: I has reached me from Ibn ʿAbbās and Ibn ʿUmar that they would say there is dispensation in that in wiping upon them with the water when you have inserted your feet in both of them pure (ṭāhir).

Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Do you regard that the dispensation in the wiping upon the khuffs is because the man does not take off his garment (lit. his warmth)?

He said: Yes.
