Wiping upon the sandals

783 – Maʿmar from Yazīd b. Abī Ziyād from Abū Ẓabyān al-Janabī.  He said: I saw ʿAlī had urinated standing until it foamed.  Then he did wuḍū and wiped upon his sandals.  Then he entered the masjid, took off his sandals and put them in his sleeve.  Then he prayed.

Maʿmar said: And were you to want for me to narrate that Zayd b. Aslam narrated to me from ʿAṭā b. Yasār from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ had acted as ʿAlī had acted, I would do so.

784 – al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash from Abū Ẓabyān.  He said: I saw ʿAlī had urinated while standing until it foamed while he had on a black cloak (khamīṣa) of his.  Then he called for some water.  He did wuḍū and wiped upon his sandals.  Then he rose and removed them.  Then he prayed ẓuhr.

785 – Ibn Jurayj said: Qays reported to me from Abū Isḥāq that someone reported to him who saw ʿAlī wiping upon his sandals.

786 – Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad from Ṣafwān b. Sulaym and Bakr b. Sawāda that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ used to wear sibtiyya sandals for the wuḍū.

787 – ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar and Mālik from Saʿīd b. Abī Saʿīd from ʿUbayd b. Jurayj said: I said to Ibn ʿUmar: I saw you wearing these sibtiyya sandals.

He said: Indeed I saw the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ wearing them and doing wuḍū in them.

We said to Abū Bakr: What is the sibtiyya?

He said: Sandals in which there is no hair (made) from the hides of cows.

We said: Perhaps that is from its being old, its hair disappearing.

He said: No, not unless it is tanned thus with no hair, like the form of the small leather drinking-vessels.
