How many strikes are in the tayammum

816 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: How is the tayammum performed?

He said: You put the inside of your hands on the ground, then you shake them off and strike one of them with the other.  Then you wipe your face and your hands with a single wiping only for the face and the hands.

I said: Do I wipe upon the beard along with the face?

He said: Yes, along with the face.

ʿAmmār said: So they rose and wiped, they struck with their hands and wiped their faces with them.  Then they returned and struck with their hands a second time, and they wipe their arms with them up to the armpits – or he said: up to the shoulders.

ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: And Maʿmar used to narrate from al-Zuhrī from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh that ʿAmmār b. Yāsir used to wipe his face with a single wiping in the tayammum, then he would return and wipe his arms up to the armpits.  And Maʿmar used to abbreviate it thus.

829 – Ibn Jurayj, he said: I said to ʿAṭā: So if it is a land devoid of herbage (reading jard instead of ḥard), not a place of sand and pebbles (baṭḥ), does it suffice for me?

He said: Yes.

I said: The place of sand and pebbles (al-baṭḥā) is close to me, so do you prefer to wipe from it?

He said: If it was close, then rub your hands with it thrice and do not wipe the face in that and do not shake it off, then you wipe your face and your hands with a single wiping only.
