Wiping upon the khuffs

851 – Maʿmar from Ayyūb.  He said: I saw al-Ḥasan had urinated, then he did wuḍū and he wiped upon his khuffs with a single wiping over their tops.

He said: So I saw the trace of his fingers upon the khuff.

852 – al-Thawrī from Abū Isḥāq from al-ʿAlā, then he said: I saw Qays b. Saʿd b. ʿUbāda had urinated, then he came to the Tigris and he wiped upon his khuffs.  He wiped his fingers over the khuff and opened between them.

He said: So I saw the trace of his fingers on the khuff.

853 – al-Thawrī from Ḥuṣayn from al-Shaʿbī.  He said: If you want you wipe (starting) by the leg, and if you want you wipe by the toes up to the leg.

al-Thawrī said: I have not heard anyone speaking of washing the khuff.

We said to Abū Bakr: Did you see al-Thawrī wiping?  Or did you see how the wiping was?

He said: We saw how the wiping was.

He put his fingers on the forepart of the khuff, and he opened between them until he came to the root of the leg and from below.  So Abū Bakr showed us how he saw al-Thawrī.  He said: And al-Dabarī showed it to us.

854 – Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī that he said: When one does wuḍū upon his khuffs, he puts one of his hands over the khuff and the other under the khuff.

855 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAṭā said: I saw Ibn ʿUmar wiping upon them – meaning his khuffs – with a single wiping with both of his hands on their bottoms and their tops.  And he had poured the water prior to that and had done wuḍū thus for a funeral (janāza) which he had been invited to.

856 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā.  He said: Wipe upon them thrice, it is preferable to me as the man wipes his feet and does not wash them.

I said: I dip my hands in the water, then I do not shake them off until I wipe with what is on them like I wipe the head?

He said: Yes.

I said: How do you regard if I miss something from the khuffs after three wipings?

He said: It does not harm you.

857 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Is the wiping only upon the two ḥalaf (?) of the khuffs?

He said: Yes.

I said: Do I not wipe on the bottom of the khuffs?

He said: No, naught save for their tops.

858 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Has a dispensation reached you regarding wiping the two quffāz (a type of glove that reaches to the elbow), or by the rafʿ (likely an error for the burqaʿ, the garment worn by some women)?

He said: No.

859 - ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: I heard Sufyān regarding a man who did wuḍū and he forgot to wipe upon his head, or part of the places of the wuḍū.  Then he wore his khuffs, then he urinated.

He said: He takes off his khuffs and repeats the wuḍū for he had not worn them upon a complete wuḍū.

Sufyān spoke regarding a man who did wuḍū for residency, so he wiped upon his khuffs part of the day for ẓuhr, or ʿaṣr, then it appeared (seemly) to him to travel, he said: He wipes upon them for the rest of three days from what has passed.

He said: And if he had wiped upon them in travel for two prayers, then he proceeded, he completes a day and night with what had passed of the wiping.  And if he had wiped in the journey for a day and night, then he proceeded, he takes them off when he proceeds from the journey and it becomes a residency.

860 – Ibn Jurayj said: Abū Bakr b. Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar reported to me from ʿĀ’isha that she said: That my foot be cut off is preferable to me to wiping upon the khuffs.
