Running (the water) through the beard

Translator’s note: Running the water through the beard here refers to combing through it with one’s wet fingers during the wuḍū.


98- حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ، عَنْ حَسَّانَ بْنِ بِلاَلٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ رَأَيْتُ عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ تَوَضَّأَ فَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَهُ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ‏؟‏ فَقَالَ‏:‏ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وسَلَّم فَعَلَهُ‏.‏


98 – Sufyān b. ʿUyayna narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Karīm from Ḥassān b. Bilāl.  He said: I saw ʿAmmār b. Yāsir doing wuḍū and he ran (the water) through his beard.


99- حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، قَالَ‏:‏ رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يُخَلِّلُ لِحْيَتَهُ إذَا تَوَضَّأَ‏.‏


99 – Hushaym narrated to us from Abū Ḥamza.  He said: I saw Ibn ʿAbbās running (the water) through his beard when he did wuḍū.


100- حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ؛ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُخَلِّلُ لِحْيَتَهُ‏.‏


100 – ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr narrated to us from ʿUbaydullāh from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar that he would run (the water) through his beard.


101- حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْنٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ رَأَيْتُ أَنَسًا تَوَضَّأَ فَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَهُ‏.‏


101 – Muʿtamir b. Sulaymān narrated to us from Abū Maʿn.  He said: I saw Anas do wuḍū and he ran (the water) through his beard.


103- حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ‏:‏ رَأَيْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ تَوَضَّأَ وَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَهُ‏.‏


103 – Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated to us from Abū Isḥāq.  He said: I saw Saʿīd b. Jubayr do wuḍū and he ran (the water) through his beard.


107- حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ؛ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُخَلِّلُ لِحْيَتَهُ إذَا تَوَضَّأَ‏.‏


107 – Wakīʿ narrated to us from Shuʿba from Mujāhid that he would run (the water) through his beard when he did wuḍū.


111- حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يُسَمِّهِ؛ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى رَجُلٍ يَتَوَضَّأُ، فَقَالَ‏:‏ خَلِّلْ، يَعْنِي لِحْيَتَهُ‏.‏


111 – Wakīʿ narrated to us from Abū ʿĀṣim from a man he did not name that ʿAlī passed by a man doing wuḍū.  So he said: Run (the water) through – meaning his beard.


114- حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنِ الْهَيْثُمَّ بْنِ جِمَازِ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبَانَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ؛ عَنِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وسَلَّم، قَالَ‏:‏ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ‏:‏ إذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ فَخَلِّلْ لِحْيَتَك‏.‏


114 – Wakīʿ narrated to us from al-Haythumm b. Jimār from Yazīd b. Abān from Anas that the Prophet صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وسَلَّم said: Gabriel came to me and said: When you do wuḍū run (the water) through your beard.
