6-7

{ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنْذِرْهُمْ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ } * { خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهمْ وَعَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِمْ وَعَلَىٰ أَبْصَٰرِهِمْ غِشَاوَةٌ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عظِيمٌ }


(6) Those who disbelieve it is the same to them whether you have warned them or not warned them, they do not believe (7) God has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing and upon their vision is a covering, and for them is a grievous punishment.


{ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنْذِرْهُمْ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ } [آية: 6]، يعنى لا يصدقون، { خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهمْ } ، يعنى طبع الله على قلوبهم، فهم لا يعقلون الهدى، { وَعَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِمْ } ، يعنى آذانهم، فلا يسمعون الهدى، { وَعَلَىٰ أَبْصَارِهِمْ غِشَاوَةٌ } ، يعنى غطاء فلا يبصرون الهدى، { وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عظِيمٌ } [آية: 7]، يعنى وافر لا انقطاع له.


Those who disbelieve it is the same to them whether you have warned them or not warned them” meaning they do affirm.  “God has set a seal upon their hearts” so they do not apprehend guidance “and upon their hearing” meaning their ears, so they do not hear guidance “and upon their vision is a covering (ghishāwa)” meaning there is a cover (ghiṭā), so they do not see guidance “and for them is a grievous punishment” meaning abundant with no break (or: cessation).


نزلت هاتان الآيتان فى مشركى العرب، منهم: شيبة وعتبة ابنا ربيعة، والوليد بن المغيرة، وأبو جهل بن هشام، اسمه عمرو، وعبدالله بن أبى أمية، وأمية بن خلف، وعمرو ابن وهب، والعاص بن وائل، والحارث بن عمرو، والنضر بن الحارث، وعدى بن مطعم بن عدى، وعامر بن خالد، أبو البحترى بن هشام.


These two āyāt came down regarding the Arab polytheists, from whom were Shayba and ʿUtba the sons of Rabīʿa, al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra, Abū Jahl b. Hishām – his name was ʿAmr –, ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Umayya, Umayya b. Khalf, ʿAmr b. Wahb, al-ʿĀṣ b. Wā’il, al-Ḥārith b. ʿAmr, al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith, ʿAdī b. Maṭʿam b. ʿAdī, ʿĀmir b. Khalid, Abū al-Bakhtarī Hishām.
