How the Prophet was taught the adhān

Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā from Muḥammad b. Bakr from Abū al-Jārūd.  He said: Abū al-ʿAlā narrated to me.  He said: I said to Muḥammad b. ʿAlī: O Abū al-Qāsim, shall you narrated to us about this adhān, for we say that only a man from the Anṣār saw it in sleep and he informed the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم of it, so he commanded him to teach it to Bilāl, so he called the adhān.

He said: He was alarmed by that, and he said: Woe be to you, do you not fear God?  You have undertaken to a command from the huge commands of your religion, and you have claimed that only a man saw at as a vision in sleep?

He said: I said: So how was it then?

He said: It was that when the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم was made to journey by night until he reached what God had willed of Heaven, so the prayer was made obligatory upon him.  God sent and angel that had not been seen in Heaven prior to that day.

So he said “God is most great.” So God be He exalted said “My servant has told the truth, I am most great.”

Then he said “I testify that there is no god but God.” So God be He exalted said “My servant has told the truth, there is no god other than Me, I am God, there is no god but Me.”

Then he said “I testify that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God.”  So God be He exalted said “My servant has told the truth, I have sent him, and I have chosen him, and I have distinguished him.”

Then he said “Hurry to prayer.”  So God be He exalted said “My servant has told the truth, he has called to My obligation.  So whoever walks to it desirous in it, it is an atonement for whatever has passed of his sins.”

Then he said “Hurry to success.” So God be He exalted said “My servant has spoken the truth, so from Me is success and prosperity.”

Then he said “The prayer has been established.” So God be He exalted said “My servant has told the truth, I have established it and delimited it.”

He said: So the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم led the people of Heaven that day, and so his nobility was completed for him that day over all of created beings.
