Chapter 13

The Imamate of Mūsā b. Jaʿfar

56 – Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā from Muḥammad b. Aḥmad from al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Mahziyār from Ibrāhīm b. Mahziyār from his brother ʿAlī b. Mahziyār from Faḍāla b. Ayyūb from Abū Jaʿfar al-Ḍarīr from his father.

He said: I was with Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام while his son Ismāʿīl was with him.  I asked him about qabāla of land (a type of transaction involving land), so he answered me regarding it.

Ismāʿīl said to him: O father, you did not understand what he said.

He said: That was grievous to me, for back then we had taken him to be an Imam after his father. So he said: Many times I have been saying to you adhere to me, and take from me, and you do not do so.

He said: So Ismāʿīl set about and exited, and the Earth encompassed me.  I said: An Imam saying to his father “You did not understand”, and his father saying to him “Many times I have been saying to you to sit with me, and take from me, and you do not do so”?

He said: So I said: May my father and my mother be (be ransomed for) for you, what is the matter with Ismāʿīl that he does not adhere to you or take from you.  When it is that, while you conveyed the commands to him, he knew of it what you taught him from your father when you were his like?

He said: So he said: Ismāʿīl is not from me as I am from my father.

He said: I said: We belong to God and unto him do we return, moreover, we belong to God and unto him do we return.  So who is after you?  May my father and my mother (be ransomed for) you, in my hands there is a remnant of my soul, and my age has become great, my bones have grinded, and my term has arrived, and I fear (if) I will remain after you.

He said: So I repeated this speech three times, and he was silent, not responding to me.  Then he got up in the third time, and said: Do not depart.

He entered a house that was empty (or: that he was alone in), and he prayed two rakʿa, prolonging them, and he supplicated and prolonged the supplication.

Then he summoned me, and I entered upon him.  While I was with him, the Righteous Servant entered upon him – and he was a young boy (at the time).  In his hand was a scourge, and he was smiling, laughing.

His father said to him: May my father and my mother (be ransomed for) you, what is this whisk that I see in your hand?

So he said: I was with Isḥāq who was striking a beast of his with it, so I took it from him.

He said: Draw near to me.

So he embraced him and kissed him, and he sat him to his side.  He said: Indeed, I find in this son of mine what Jacob found in Joseph.

He said: So I said: May my father and my mother (be ransomed for) you, tell me more.

So he said: What arose in us – the People of the House – arose in the like of him.

He said: So I said: Tell me more.

He said: So he said: Do you see this son of mine?  Indeed I find in him as what my father found in it.

He said: I said: O my master, tell me more.

He said: When my father would supplicate, and would love to be responded to, he would stand me to his right then supplicate and I would say Āmīn, and I do that with this son of mine.  Yesterday I had remembered you in the Mawqif so I supplicated for you – as my father would supplicate for me – while this son of mine would say Āmīn.  And I am not ashamed of him as my father would not be ashamed of me.

He said: I said: O my master, tell me more.

He said: Do you see this son of mine?  Indeed I entrust him upon what my father would entrust me upon.

I said: O my master, tell me more.

He said: When my father went out to some of his land, he took me out with him.  He saw me dozing off in the road, he commanded me to draw my riding camel near to his riding camel.  Then he put my arm beneath my head [likely a manuscript error], and our she-camels where conjoined with one another, and we were as that for the two night and the three.  And my son does this upon what you see of the youthfulness of his age just as I used to do.

He said: I said: O my master, tell me more.

He said: My father would entrust to me the books of the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله in the writing of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib عليه السلام, and I entrust this son of mine with it, so it is with him today.

He said: I said: O my master, tell me more.

He said: Get up, take his hand, and give salām to him for he is your master and your Imam after me.  No one with leave it off – in whatever is between me and him – but that he be a slanderer.  O so-and-so, if the people betake to the right and the left, so betake with him for he is your master and your ṣāḥib.  Indeed it had not been permitted to me in the beginning of what was from you (to tell him that he was the Imam after him?).

He said: So I got up and I took him hand and kissed it and kissed his head, and I gave salām to him.  And I said: I bear witness that you are my master and my Imam.

He said: So he said to me: Indeed, you have told the truth and hit the mark, and you have succeeded. Indeed it had not been permitted to me in the beginning of what was from you.

He said: I said to him: May father and my mother (be ransomed for) for you, do I report this?

He said: Yes.  Report it to whoever you trust with it, and report it to so-and-so and so-and-so – two men from the people of Kufa – and be gentle with the people and do not cast a hurt between them.

He said: So I got up and came to so-and-so and so-and-so, while they were in a journey, and I informed them of the report.  As to so-and-so, he submitted and said: I have submitted and I accept.  And as to so-and-so, he rent his garment at this chest, and said: No, by God, I will not listen and I will not obey and I will not affirm until I hear from him.  Then he arose hurriedly in his hast – and there was some of the Bedouin nature in him – and I followed him until he ended up to the gate of Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام.

He said: So we sought permission (to enter), and he gave permission to me before him, then he gave permission to him, so he entered.

Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام said to him: O so-and-so, does “every man of them desires to be given scrolls unrolled” (74:52)?  What so-and-so has brought is the truth, so take it.

He said: May my father and my mother be for you, I would love hear it from your mouth.

So he said: My son Mūsā عليه السلام is your Imam and your master after me.  No one will leave it off in what is between me and him but a liar and a slanderer.

He said: So he turned to me – and he was a man who had tribes that he was admitted to, and he used to be proficient in Nabataean speech – so he turned to me and said: Zarqah.

He said: So Abū ʿAbdillāh said: Zarqah in Nabataean is take this, indeed take this.

57 – Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā from Muḥammad b. Aḥmad from Yaʿqūb b. Yazīd from Ṣafwān from Ibn Muskān from Sulaymān b. Khālid.

He said: One day while we were with him, Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام said to ʿAbdullāh: Go in such-and-such need.

So he said to him: Direct so-and-so, for it is not possible for me, and what is similar to that.

He said: So I saw anger in the face of Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام while he was saying: O God, curse him, God refuses that he not be worshipped in spite of you, O degenerate.

Then he summoned Abū al-Ḥasan Mūsā عليه السلام and he said to us: Betake you to this one after me, for he – by God – your master (ṣāḥib).

58 – And from him from Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn from Aḥmad b. Ḥamza al-Qummī from Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm al-Qarashī from Ibrāhīm b. Abī al-Bilād.

He said: I heard Abu al-Ḥasan Mūsā عليه السلام saying:

May God curse ʿAbdullāh, for he had lied against my father عليه السلام and claimed an authority that was for God displeasing in Heaven.
