The washing of the forearms

Abu Sa`īd Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ziyād al-Aʿrābī reported to us.  He said: Abu Ayyūb Yaʿqūb Isḥāq b. ʿAbbād al-Dabarī reported to us.  He said: I read upon ʿAbd al-Razzāq b. Hammām b. Nāfiʿ:

1 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: How do you regard that if I dipped my arms in a kiẓāma (a vessel for wuḍū, or a subterranean conduit for water) with a dipping?  He said: It suffices you, and the foot is likewise, but cleanse it.

2 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: “So wash your faces and your arms up to the elbows” (5:6), is it (i.e. the elbows) included in what is washed?  He said: Yes, there is no doubt in that.

3 – Ibn Jurayj said: Ziyād reported to me that Fulayj b. Sulaymān reported to him that Abū Hurayra did wuḍū and washed the armpits.  So it was said to him: What you want by this?  He said: I want to better my taḥjīl (lit. brightening, i.e. washing beyond the elbows and ankles) – or he said: my taḥlīl (expiation).
