The washing of the feet

53 – Maʿmar from Qatāda from ʿIkrima and al-Ḥasan.  They said regarding this verse “O you who believe, when you rise to salat then wash your faces and our arms up to the elbows and wipe your heads and your feet up to the ankles” (5:6) They said: You wipe the feet.

54 – Maʿmar from Qatāda from Jābir b. Yazīd or `Ikrima from Ibn `Abbās.  He said: God obligated two washings and two wipings.  Do you not see that He mentioned the tayammum and made the place of the two washings two wipings and left off the two wipings.

And a man said to Maṭar al-Warrāq: Who used to say (i.e. profess) the wiping upon the feet?  So he said: Many fuqahā.

55 – Ibn Jurayj said: ʿAmr b. Dīnār reported to me that he heard ʿIkrima saying: Ibn ʿAbbas said: The wuḍū is two wipings and two washings.

56 – Ibn ʿUyayna said: Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid narrated to us from al-Shaʿbī.  He said: As to Jibrīl عليه السلام, he descended with the wiping upon the feet.

57 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Abī al-Sawdā.  He said: I heard Ibn ʿAbd Khayr narrating from his father.  He said: I saw ʿAlī doing wuḍū and he set about washing the top of his feet.  And he said: Had I not seen the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم washing the top of his feet I would have regarded the bottom of the feet more entitled to washing than their top.

58 – Ibn Jurayj said: I said to ʿAṭā: Why do I not wipe the feet as I wipe the head, while He said them together?  He said: I do not regard it to be but the wiping of the head and the washing of the feet.  Indeed I heard Abu Hurayra saying: Woe be to the heels from the Fire.

ʿAṭā said: Some people say it is wiping, but as to me I wash them.

60 – Maʿmar from Hishām b. ʿUrwa that his father said: The wiping upon the feet returned to the washing in His saying “and your feet up to the ankles.”

61 – Muḥammad b. Muslim from Ibrāhīm b. Maysara from ʿUthmān b. Abī Suwayd that he mentioned the wiping upon the feet to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Azīz.  So he said: It has reached me from three of the companions of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, the nearest of them being your uncle, al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba, that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم washed his feet.

62 – Maʿmar reported to me from Muḥammad b. Ziyād.  He said: I saw Abū Hurayra pass by a group doing wuḍū from the vessel for purification (al-miṭhara), so he said: Do the wuḍū well, may God have mercy upon you.  Have you not heard what the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Woe be to the heels from the Fire.

64 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Ibn Abī Najīḥ from Mujāhid from a man from Abū Dharra.  He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم oversaw us while we were doing wuḍū.  So he said: Woe be to the heels from the Fire.  He said: So we began to wash them with a washing and rub them with a rubbing.

65 – Maʿmar from ʿAbdullah b Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl from al-Rubayyiʿ that the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم washed his feet three times.  The she said to us: Ibn ʿAbbās entered upon us and asked me about this [ḥadith], so I informed him.  So he said: The people refuse but the washing while we find the wiping in the Book of God تعالى, meaning the feet.

67 – Maʿmar from ʿAmr from al-Ḥasan.  He used to say: Run (the water) through your toes before they are run through with the Fire.

Translator's note: "Toes" here can also be translated as fingers, which considering that al-Hasan appears to have advocated for the wiping of the feet in the wudu (see hadith #53 in this chapter), may be the more likely translation of his intent in this context.

69 – Ibn ʿUyayna from Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān from Saʿīd b. Abī Saʿīd.  ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr did wuḍū with ʿĀ’isha, so she said to him: Perform the wuḍū thoroughly for I heard the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: Woe be to the heels from the Fire.

80 – Ibn Jurayj reported to us.  He said: Ismāʿīl b. Kathīr Abū Hāshim al-Makkī narrated to us from ʿĀṣim b. Laqīṭ Ṣabira from his his father or his grandfather.  He said: I and companions of mine set out until we ended up to the Messenger of God So we had not found him.  He said: So ʿĀ’isha fed us dates and prepared an ʿasīda for us, when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came as though he were descending from a high place.

He said: Did you feed them anything?  We said: Yes.  So we were thus for a while, when a shepherd drove the sheep in the pasture and there was a lamb in his hand.  He said: Have you delivered?  He said: Yes.  He said: So slaughter a ewe for them.  Then he turned to us and said: Do not reckon (la taḥsibanna) – and he did not say la taḥsabanna – that we have slaughtered the ewe due to you.  We have a hundred sheep, we do not want to increase upon it.  When the shepherd delivers a lamb for us we command him to slaughter a ewe.

He said: I said: O Messenger of God, inform me about the wuḍū.  He said: When do you wuḍū then thoroughly perform it, and run (water) through the toes.  And when you snuff and eject from your nose then make it reach unless you are fasting.

He said: O Messenger of God, I have a wife – and he mentioned the length of her tongue and her foul speech.  So he said: Divorce her.  He said: I said: O Messenger of God, she has companionship (with me) and a child.  He said: Keep her and command her.  So if there is good in her then she will do it.  And do not hit your wife with your striking of your slave woman.

81 – Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭā.  He said: When you dip your arm (or: hand) in a kiẓāma (a vessel for wuḍū, or a subterranean conduit for water) for wuḍū, cleanse it and it suffices you.  And do not begin with the left of your feet prior to their right.

82 – al-Thawrī from Jābir from al-Shaʿbī regarding a man who inserted his feet into a river and did not touch them with his hand.  He said: It suffices him.
