Chapter 25

The two types of knowledge of Allah and which of them the Imams know

1 – Muhammad b. `Abd al-Hamid and Abu Talib both from Hanan b. Sadir from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: Allah has a general (`amm) knowledge and a special (khass) knowledge.  So as to the special, it is that which no angel of proximity or sent prophet gets to know.  And as to His general knowledge which the angels of proximity and the sent prophets get to know, all of that has risen up to us.  Then he said: Indeed you recite “And with Him is the knowledge of the Hour; and He sends down the rain; and He knows what is in the wombs; and no soul knows what it is that it shall earn tomorrow; and no soul knows in what land it shall die”

2 – Ahmad b. Muhammad from Ibn Abi `Umar or from the one who narrated it from Ibn Abi `Umayr from Ja`far b. `Uthman from Sama`a from Abu Basir and Wahb from Abu Basir from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: Allah has two knowledges: a stored hidden knowledge which none knows but He – bada’ is from that – and a knowledge which His angels and His messengers and His prophets know, and we know it.

3 – Ahmad b. Muhammad from al-Husayn b. Sa`id from al-Qasim b. Muhammad from Ibn Abi Hamza from Abu Basir from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.  He said: Allah تبارك وتعالى said to His Prophet “So turn from them; you will not be to blame” (51:54) He wanted to punish the people of the Earth, then bada’ occurred for Allah and mercy was sent down.  So He said “Remind O Muhammad, for the reminder benefits the believers”

So I (Abu Basir) returned afterwards, and I said to Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام: May I be made your ransom, I conversed with our companions and they said: Bada’ occurs for Allah (in) what was not in His knowledge.  So Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: Allah has two knowledges: a knowledge with Him that no one of His creation gets to know, and a knowledge His discards to His angels and His messengers.  So what He discarded to His angels has ended up to us.

4 – Ahmad b. Muhammad from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Hanan al-Kindi from his father from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: Allah has a special knowledge and a general knowledge.  So as to His special knowledge, it is that which His angels of proximity and sent prophets did not get to know.  And as to His general knowledge, it is that which His angels of proximity and His sent prophets got to know, and it has fallen to us from the Messenger of Allah.

5 – `Abdullah b. Muhammad from Muhammad b. al-Husayn from `Uthman b. `Isa from Sama`a from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.  He said: Allah has a knowledge which He taught His angels and His prophets and His messengers, and we know it, and a knowledge which no one from the creation of Allah gets to know.
