Chapter 5

The contentment of the angels and the contentment of Adam

1 – [`Ilal ash-Shara`i] `Ali b. Hatim from Abu ‘l-Qasim Humayd b. Ziyad from `Abdullah [likely an error for `Ubaydullah] b. Ahmad from `Ali b. al-Husayn at-Tatari [likely an error for `Ali al-Hasan at-Tatari] from Muhammad b. Ziyad from Abu Khadija.  He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام saying: A man passed by my father عليه السلام while he was doing tawaf, and he struck his hand on his shoulder, then said: I ask you about three characteristics which none other than you and another man knows.  So he was silent to him until he finished from his tawaf.  Then he entered the Hijr and prayed two rak`at while I was with him.  So when he finished, he called out: Where is this questioner?  So he came and sat before him.  So he said to him: Ask.

So he asked him about “Nun.  By the the pen and what they write” (68:1) So he answered him, then he said: Narrate to me about the angels when they replied against the Lord where He was wroth with them, and how He (then was) content with them.  So he said: The angels did tawaf of the Throne for seven thousand years, supplicating Him and seeking His forgiveness and asking Him to be content with them.  So He was pleased with them after seven years.  So he said: You have told the truth.

Then he said: Narrate to me about the contentment of the Lord with Adam.  So he said: When Adam was sent down, he descended in India, and his Lord تعالى asked (for?) this House, and He commanded him to come to it and do tawaf of it for a week, and to come to Mina and `Arafat, and to carry out all of its rites.  So he came from India as Allah had commanded him, and the place of his feet where he stepped upon it (became?) a flourishing land and what was between the (one) foot to the (other) foot was a desert in which there was nothing.  Then he came to the House and did tawaf for a week, and its rites came and he carried them out as Allah had commanded him.  So Allah accepted the repentance from him and forgave him.  He said: So the tawaf of Adam was made for what the angels did of tawaf of the Throne in seven years.  So Jibra’il said: May it delight you, O Adam, He has forgiven you.  I did tawaf of this House before you for three thousand years.  So Adam said: O Lord, forgive me and my progeny after me.  So He said: Yes, whoever from them believes in Me and in My messengers.

So he said: You have told the truth.  So my father عليه السلام said: This is Jibra’il, he came to you teaching you the guideposts of your religion.

2 – [`Ilal ash-Shara`i] `Ali b. Hatim from al-Qasim b. Muhammad from Hamdan b. al-Husayn from al-Husayn b. al-Walid from Abu Bakr from Hanan b. Sadir from Abu Hamza ath-Thumali from `Ali b. al-Husayn (عليه السلام).  He said: I said: Why did the tawaf become seven rounds?  So he said: (It is) because Allah said to the angels “I am placing a khalifa in the Earth.”  So they replied to Him and said “Will You place therein one who does corruption in it and sheds blood?”  Allah said “I know what you do not know” (2:30).  And He had not been veiling them from His light so He veiled them from His light for seven thousand years.  So they took refuge with the throne for seven thousand years, so He had mercy upon them and turned to them.  And He made for the Bayt al-Ma`mur in the fourth heaven, and made it a refuge.  And He placed the Bayt al-Haram under the Bayt al-Ma`mur, and He made it a refuge for mankind and a security. So the tawaf became seven wajib rounds upon the servants, for every thousand years one round.
