Chapter 5

Siwak and the virtue of wudu

Zayd b. `Ali narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from `Ali عليهم السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Were it not that I fear to make it difficult upon my nation I would have obligated the siwak at every purification for them.  So do not leave it off, O `Ali, and whoever is able (to use) the siwak at the wudu is not to leave it off.

Zayd b. `Ali from his father from his grandfather from `Ali عليهم السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: There is no Muslim man who gets up in the middle of the night to his siwak and cleans his teeth with it, then purifies himself for the salat and performs the wudu thoroughly, then gets up to a house from the houses of Allah  عز وجل but that an angel will come to him and put his mouth upon his mouth, so nothing will comes out from his inside but that it will enter the mouth of the angel, so that he will bring on the day of the resurrection as an interceding witness.

Zayd b. `Ali narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from `Ali عليهم السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: No salat is accepted except with zakat, and no salat is accepted except with Quran (or: recitation), and no salat is accepted except with purification, and no charity (sadaqa) is accepted from ghulul (treacherous behavior, stealing from the goods taken in war).

Abu Khalid narrate to me.  He said: Zayd b. `Ali narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from `Ali عليهم السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Three have been given to me which no prophet prior to me has been given: the earth was made a place of prostration for me and purifier for me, Allah عز وجل said “So if you did not find water then do tayammum (with) good earth and wipe your faces.”; and the spoils were made lawful for me, and it was not made lawful for anyone prior to me, and that is His تعالى saying “and know that whenever you seize anything as a spoil, to Allah belongs a fifth thereof, and to His Messenger, and to the kindred” al-aya; and I have been helped by terror upon the (the distance of) a month’s journey.  And I have been favored over the prophets عليهم السلام on the day of the resurrection by three: my nation will come on the day of the resurrection beautiful, radiant from the marks of the wudu, recognized from among the nations; and the mu’adhdhins will come on the day of the resurrection as the longest of necks of mankind, calling by the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger; and the third, there is no prophet but that he will be reckoned with a sin on the day of the resurrection other than me, due to His تعالى saying “that Allah may forgive you your former and your latter sins”.

Zayd b. `Ali عليه السلام narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from `Ali عليهم السلام that when he would enter the washroom, he said: bismillaahi Allaahumma innee a`udhoo bika mina ‘r-rijsi ‘n-nijsi ‘l-khabeethi ‘l-mukhbithi ‘sh-shayTaani ‘r-rajeem (By the name of Allah, Allahumma I seek refuge with You from the unclean, impure, wicked and filthy Shaytan, the damned).  And when exited from the washroom, he said: al-Hamdu lillaahi ‘l-ladhee `aafaanee fii jasadee, al-Hamdu lillaahi ‘l-ladhee amaaTa `annee ‘l-adhaa (Praise be to Allah who has healed me of affliction in my body, praise be to Allah who who has removed hurt from me).

Zayd b. `Ali narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from `Ali عليهم السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: There is no Muslim man who does wudu then says at his finishing from his wudu “subHaanakAllaahumma wa bi-Hamdika ashhadu al-laa ilaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayka Allaahumma ‘j`alnee mina ‘t-tawwaabeena wa ‘j`alnee mina ‘l-mutaTahhireena wa ‘ghfirlee innaka `alaa kulli shay’in qadeer” (By your glorification, Allahumma, and by Your praise, I testify that there is no god but You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent unto You, Allahumma make me be from the penitent and make me be from the one who purify themselves, and forgive me, truly You are powerful over everything) but that it is written in a parchment then sealed upon it, then placed under the Throne until it is handed to him with its seal on the day of the resurrection.
