Introduction

By the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

O Lord, send Your benedictions upon Your Messenger and his holy family, and grant us the vision of our Imam and hasten his rise


The following work is an attempt to compile together the existing narrations reported on the authority of Abu ‘l-Qasim Humayd b. Ziyad b. Hammad b. Hammad b. Ziyad, the prolific Waqifi scholar who died in the year 310 AH.  He is listed as having been a Kufan, with it noted that he had moved to Nineveh. He was a student of al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. Sama`a (d. 263 AH), himself a prolific scholar of the Waqifi da`wa, and so very often we find Humayd narrating from his teacher in the isnads.  Tusi mentions Humayd as having been a venerable scholar, expansive in knowledge, and prolific in authorship. The books listed that he wrote are a book of khums, book of du`a, book of rijal, book of those who narrated from as-Sadiq عليه السلام, book of the fara’id, book of evidences, book of censure of those who opposed the truth and its people, book on the virtue of knowledge and the learned, book of three, book of four, and a large book of Nawadir.

Apart from his own writings, he is particularly known as the one who transmitted the majority of the Usool. The latter were the original notebook collections of hadiths by the Imams’ companions and their students, which in turn became the source for the later compendiums of hadith like al-Kafi. As to the latter, al-Kulayni himself was amongst those who narrated from him directly, and whose work is the major source for Humayd’s narrations.

It is hoped that in collecting these narrations together, we might discern some sense of his work and views through the narrations he would have chosen to transmit, and thus those of the Waqifa themselves, particularly those of a later date.  It is also hoped that in doing so we might discern from the isnads which narrators a Waqifi scholar such as himself (and very often, his teacher Ibn Sama`a) would have considered credible sources to draw from and to see what patterns if any might emerge from that.  But of course, the primary value of the work is in the hadiths themselves, containing as they do teachings of our righteous Imams.

By the nature of this endeavor with the limited sources at our disposal, it can only be taken to represent a small selection of what was likely found in his own books (as well as his teacher’s), and so should not be considered a complete work in itself.  As such it should be expected that there will be gaps in the topics found here.  The organization of the work will (for now at least, as this is a work in progress) be divided into two very broad parts.  The first part will contain hadiths dealing with beliefs, ethics, history and related topics.  The second part will contain hadiths of a legal nature, dealing with the practices and laws of the religion.  Sources for the hadiths will be mentioned in square brackets at the beginning of the hadith.
