بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 


By the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful


 هذه الرسالة الموسومة بطب النبي صلى الله عليه وآله .  وجدت بحذف الاسانيد مكتوبة : 


This is the treatise that is called Tibb an-Nabi (Medicine of the Prophet) صلى الله عليه وآله.  And I found it written with the isnads deleted:


 قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ما خلق الله تعالى داء إلا وخلق له دواء إلا السام . 


The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Allah تعالى has not created a malady, but that He has created for it a cure, except for death.

Translator's Note: Hereafter, we have not included most of the occurrences of the expression "The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said" that occurs at the beginning of the narrations.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : الذي انزل الداء انزل الشفاء . 


He who has sent down the malady has sent down the remedy.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : بشر المحرورين بطول العمر . 


Give tidings to the hot-tempered of the longevity of the life-span (in another copy -  المحذورين - objects of caution. i.e. announce the prolonging of the life-span to those who observe precaution).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : اصل كل داء البرودة . 


The root of every malady is coldness (or, frigidity).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : كل وانت تشتهي وامسك وانت تشتهي . 


Eat when you crave (have an appetite) and stop while you are (still) craving (hungry).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : المعدة بيت كل داء ، والحمية رأس كل دواء فاعط نفسك ما عودتها . 


The stomach is the house of every malady, and diet (i.e. a dietary regimen) is the head of every cure. So give yourself what you have accustomed it to.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : احب الطعام إلى الله تعالى ما كثرت عليه الايدي . 


The most beloved of food to Allah تعالى is that upon which the hands are plentiful (i.e. when many people gather together to partake of it).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : الأكل بأصبع واحدة أكل الشيطان والأكل بالاثنين أكل الجبابرة ، وبالثلاث اكل الانبياء . 


Eating with a single finger is the eating of Shaytan.  Eating with two is the eating of the insolent.  And (eating) with three is the eating of the prophets.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : برد الطعام فان الحار لا بركة فيه . 


Cool the food, for there is no blessing in heat.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : إذا أكلتم فاخلعوا نعالكم فانه اروح لاقدامكم وانه سنة جميلة . 


While eating, remove your sandals, for it relaxes your feet and it is a beautiful custom.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : الأكل مع الخدام من التواضع ، فمن أكل معهم اشتاقت اليه الجنة . 


Eating with the servants is from humility.  Thus, one who eats with them, paradise yearns for him.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : الأكل في السوق من الدنائة . 


Eating in the market is of baseness.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : المؤمن يأكل بشهوة اهله ، والمنافق يأكل اهله بشهوته . 


The believer eats according to the desire of his family, and the hypocrite (is the one whose) family eats according to his desire.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : إذا وضعت المائدة فليأكل احدكم مما يليه ، ولا يتناول ذروة الطعام ، فأن البركة تأتيها من اعلاها ، ولا يقوم احدكم ولا يرفع يده وان شبع ، حتى يرفع القوم ايديهم فان ذلك يخجل جليسه . 


When the table is set, every one of you must eat what is before (lit. near/next to) him, not reaching over to the  top of the food (i.e. not extending to take from the center/top), for the blessing comes to it (i.e. the food) due to the topmost of it. And none of you must rise nor lift his hand, even if he has had his fill, until the group has raised their hands; for that embarrasses his companion.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : البركة في وسط الطعام فكلوا من حافاته ولا تأكلوا من وسطه . 


The blessing is in the middle of the food, so eat from its brim and do not eat from its middle.


 وقال ( ص) : البركة في الثلاثة : الجماعة ، والسحور ، والثريد .


The blessing is in three: the congregation (al-jama`a, i.e. in eating together), the suhoor (pre-fajr meal taken prior to fasting), and the thareed (a dish composed of meat and crumbled bread in a broth).


وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : من استعمل الخشبتين امن من عذاب الكليتين . 


One who makes use of the two pieces of wood (i.e. the miswak and the khilal - toothpick) is safe from the affliction of the kidneys.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : تخللوا على اثر الطعام وتمضمضوا فأنهما مصحة الناب والنواجد . 


Use a toothpick after food, and rinse your mouth, for it promotes health in the canine (teeth) and the molars.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : تخللوا فانه من النظافة ، والنظافة من الايمان ، والايمان مع صاحبه في الجنة . 


Use a toothpick for it is a part of cleanliness, and cleanliness is from faith, and faith is with its owner in the Garden.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : طعام الجواد دواء ، وطعام البخيل داء . 


The food of the generous is a cure, and the food of the miserly is a malady.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : القصعة تستغفر لمن يلحسها . 


The qas`a (a type of bowl) seeks forgiveness for the one who licks it.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : كلوا جميعاً ولا تفرقوا ، فان البركة في الجماعة . 


Eat together and do not separate, for the blessing is in the congregation.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : كثرة الطعام شؤم . 


Abundance of food is a bad omen (shu’m; or, calamity).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : من جاع او احتاج وكتمه من الناس ومضى الى الله تعالى كان حقاً عليه ان يفتح له رزق سنة حلالا . 


One who is hungry or who is in need but conceals from the people and turned to Allah تعالى, then it is His duty that He open up for him the provision of a year in a lawful way.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : من اكل ما يسقط من المائدة عاش ما عاش في سعة من رزقه ، وعوفي ولده وولد ولده من الحرام . 


One who eats what has fallen from the table shall live what he lives in abundance of provision, and his child shall be forgiven, even if he was born illegitimately.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليكرم ضيفه . 


One who has faith in Allah and the Last Day must honor his guest.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : من التواضع ان يشرب الرجل من سؤر اخيه المؤمن . 


It is a part of humility that a man should drink of the leftover (drink) of his brother believer.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : من قل اكله قل حسابه . 


One who lessens his eating shall have his reckoning lessened.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله : لا يشربن احدكم قائماً ، فمن نسى فليقيء .


Do not drink standing, any of you, and whoever has forgotten, then he is to vomit.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : المحتكر ملعون ـ في الدنيا والآخرة ـ . 


The hoarder is accursed, in this life and in the hereafter.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الاحتكار في عشرة : البر والشعير والتمر والزبيب والذرة والسمن والعسل والجبن والجوز والزيت . 


Hoarding is in ten things: wheat, barley, dates, raisins, durra, ghee, honey, cheese, nuts, and oil.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا لم يكن للمرء تجارة إلا في الطعام طغى وبغى . 


When there is no business for a man other than in food, then he oppresses and wrongs.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من جمع طعاماً يتربص به الغلاء اربعين يوماً فقد برىء من الله وبرئ الله منه . 


One who collects food waiting for it to rise in price after forty days, then he has nothing to do with Allah, and Allah has nothing to do with him.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من احتكر على المسلمين طعاماً ضربه الله تعالى بالجذام والافلاس .


One who hoards food from the Muslims, Allah تعالى shall strike him with judham and insolvency.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : تسحروا فأن السحور بركة . 

Do suhoor (having a meal prior to fajr before the fast), for suhoor is a blessing.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : تسحروا خلاف اهل الكتاب . 


Do suhoor, in opposition to the people of the Book.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : خير طعامكم الخبز ، وخير فاكهتكم العنب . 


The best of your foods is bread, and the best of your fruits is grapes.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالجزار ... متى ... أي كونوا منهم (1) . 


Betake to the butcher ... when ... that you may be of them. (manuscripts incomplete)


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالهريسة فأنها تنشط للعبادة اربعين يوماً وهي التي انزلت علينا بدل مائدة عيسى عليه السلام . 


Betake to hareesa (a dish of meat and bulgur) for it encourages worship for forty days.  It is what has been sent to us as a replacement of the table of `Isa عليه السلام.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا تقطعوا الخبز بالسكين واكرموه فأن الله تعالى اكرمه . 


Do not cut the bread with a knife but rather honor it, for Allah تعالى has honored it


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ثلاث لقمات بالملح قبل الطعام تصرف عن ابن آدم اثنين وسبعين نوعا من البلاء منه الجنون والجذام والبرص . 


Three morsels of salt before the food dissuades seventy-two types of calamnity from the son of Adam, amongst them are insanity, judham, and baras.  

(translator’s note: judham and baras are two skin disorders, the former being what in English was called the "black" leprosy (actual leprosy) while the latter possibly being what was called the "white" leprosy (more accurately vitiligo/leucoderma), however the exact identity is in dispute)


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : سيد ادامكم الملح . 


The master of your condiments is salt.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل الملح قبل كل شيء دفع الله عنه ثلثمائة وثلاثين نوعاً من البلاء اهونها الجذام . 


One who eats salt prior to everything, Allah repels back three hundred and thirty types of calamity from him, the easiest of them being judham.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : افتتحوا بالملح فانه دواء من سبعين داء . 


Commence with salt for it is the cure of seventy maladies.

 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : افضل الصدقة الماء . 


The best charity is water.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : سيد الاشربة في الدنيا والآخرة الماء . 


The master of drinks in the world and in the hereafter is water.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إن الحمى من قيح جهنم . 


Fever is from the pus of Jahannum.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا اشتهيتم الماء فاشربوه مصاً ، ولا تشربوه عباً . 


If you should desire water then drink it by sipping, and do not drink it by gulping.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : العب يورث الكباد . 


Gulping brings about kubad (ailment of the liver).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كل طعام وشراب وقعت فيه دابة ليس لها نفس سايلة فماتت فهو حلال وطهور . 


Every food and drink wherein an animal without spirit should fall in it and die, then it is lawful and pure.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من تعود كثرة الطعام والشراب قسا قلبه . 


One who becomes accustomed to an abundance of food and drink, his heart will harden.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا شرب احدكم الماء وتنفس ثلاثاً كان آمناً .


When one of you drinks water and breaths thrice, he is secure.

 

 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : شرار امتي الذين يأكلون مخاخ العظام . 


The worst of my Umma are those who eat the marrow of bones.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ان ابليس يخطب شياطينه ويقول عليكم باللحم ، والمسكر ، والناي ، فاني لا اجد جماع الشر إلا فيها .


Iblis exhorts his Shayateen saying: Betake you to meat, and intoxicants, and the nay (a type of flute), for truly I have not found the aggregate of evil but in them.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : خير الادام في الدنيا والآخرة اللحم . 


The best condiment in the world and the hereafter is meat.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بأكل الجزور مخالفة لليهود . 


Betake you to the eating of the slaughtered camel, in opposition to the Jews.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اللحم ينبت اللحم ، ومن ترك اللحم اربعين صباحاً ساء خلقه . 


Flesh grows flesh.  And one who gives up meat for forty days in the morning, his creation is worsened.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من ترك اكل الميتة والدم ولحم الخنزير عند الاضطرار ومات فله النار خالداً مخلداً . 


One who leaves off the eating of the dead animal, blood, and swine meat in an emergency and dies, for him shall be an eternity residing in the Fire.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا تقطعوا اللحم بالسكين على الخوان فانه من صنع الاعاجم ، وانهشوه نهشاً فانه اهنأ وامرأ . 


Do not cut meat with a knife upon the table (al-khiwan), for it is the act of the foreigners (or, Persians).  And bite it with a bite for it is most wholesome and salubrious.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا تأكلوا من صيد المجوس إلا السمك . 


Do not eat of the game of the Zoroastrians, except for fish.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل اللحم اربعين يوماً صباحاً قسا قلبه . 


One who eats meats in the morning for forty days, his heart shall harden.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اوحى الله تعالى إلى نبي من انبيائه حين شكى اليه ضعفه ان اطبخ اللحم مع اللبن فاني قد جعلت الشفاء والبركة فيهما . 


Allah تعالى revealed to a prophet from His prophets, when he complained to Him of his weakness, that:  Cook meat with milk, for I have put healing and blessing in them.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الارز في الاطعمة كالسيد في القوم وانا في الانبياء كالملح في الطعام . 


Rice is to food as the master is to the people, and I am to the prophets as salt is to food.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل الفاكهة وتراً لم تضره . 


One who eats the fruit singly, it shall not harm him.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ادهنوا بالبنفسج فانه بارد بالصيف ، حار في الشتاء . 


Anoint with violet for it is cold in summer and hot in winter.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اسقوا نساءكم الحوامل الالبان فانها تزيد في عقل الصبي .


Give your pregnant women milk to drink, for it increases the intellect of the child.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا شربتم اللبن فتمضمضوا فان فيه دسماً . 


When you have drunken milk wash your mouth, for there is fat in it.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ثلاثة لا ترد ، الوسادة ، واللبن ، والدهن . 


Do not decline three: the cushion, milk, and oil.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : أكل الجبن داء ، والجوز دواء ، فاذا اجتمعا معاً صارا دواءاً . 


Eating cheese is a malady, and the walnut is a cure, so if they are brought together then they become a cure.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : شرب اللبن ( من ) محض الايمان . 


Drinking milk is [from] the pure faith.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالألبان فانها تمسح الحر عن القلب كما يكسح الاصبع العرق عن الجبين ، وتشد الظهر وتزيد في العقل وتذكي الذهن وتجلو البصر وتذهب النسيان . 


Betake you to milk for it wipes heat from the heart as the fingers sweep sweat from the forehead.  And it strengthens the back, increases the intellect, kindles the mind, clarifies vision, and removes forgetfulness.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عشر خصال تورث النسيان : أكل الجبن ، واكل سؤر الفارة ، وأكل التفاح الحامض ، والجلجلان ، والجحامة على النقرة ، والمشي بين المرأتين ، والنظر إلى المصلوب ، والتعاز ، وقراءة لوح المقابر . 


Ten traits bring about forgetfulness: eating cheese, eating the leftover of the mouse, eating a sour apple, sesame, cupping on the nape, walking between two women, looking at the crucified, at-ti`az (?), and reading the tablet of the tombs.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ليس يجزي مكان الطعام والشراب غير اللبن . 


Nothing takes the place of food and drink except for milk.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الشاة بركة ، والشاتان بركتان ، وثلاث شياه غنيمة . 


A sheep is a blessing, two sheep are two blessings, and three sheep are ghaneema (profit, or, booty).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ثلاثة يفرح بهن الجسم ويربو ، الطيب ولباس اللين ، وشرب العسل . 


Three there are that delight the body and make it grow: perfume, soft clothing, and drinking honey.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالعسل فو الذي نفسي بيده ما من بيت فيه عسل إلا وتستغفر الملائكة لاهل ذلك البيت فان شربها رجل دخل في جوفه الف دواء ، وخرج عنه الف الف داء ، فان مات وهو في جوفه لم تمس النار جسده .


Betake you to honey, for by the One in whose Hand is my soul, there is no house with honey in it but that the angels ask forgiveness for the people of that house.  For if a man should drink it there enters into his mouth a thousand cures, and there exits from it a thousand thousand ailments.  For if he should die, and it is in his mouth, the Fire shall not touch his body.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : قلب المؤمن حلو يحب الحلاوة . 


The heart of the believer is sweet, loving sweetness.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من ألقم في فم اخيه المؤمن لقمة حلو لا يرجو بها رشوة ولا يخاف بها من شره ولا يريد إلا وجهه ، صرف الله عنه بها حرارة الموقف يوم القيامة . 


One who places in the mouth of his brother believer a sweet morsel, not expecting bribery for it, and not due to fearing his evil (not feeding him out of fear/force), and he does seek other than his face (or, His Face), Allah shall turn him away by from the heat of the stopping place on the day of the resurrection.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : نعم الشراب العسل يربي ويذهب درن الصدر . 


An excellent drink honey is, it makes (the body) grow and removes filth (or, tuberculosis) from the chest.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من أراد الحفظ فياكل العسل .


One who wants preservation (or, memorization), then he is to eat honey.

 

 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا اشترى احدكم الخادمة فليكن اول ما يطعمها العسل فانه اطيب لنفسها . 


If one of you should purchase a servant (fem.), then let the first of what he feeds her be honey, for it makes her self pleasant.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا ولدت المرأة فليكن اول ما تأكل الرطب الحلو والتمر فأنه لو كان شيء افضل منه اطعمه الله تعالى مريم حين ولدت عيسى عليه السلام . 


If a women gives birth then let the first thing she eats be sweet fresh dates and dried ones, for if there were a thing better than it, Allah تعالى would have fed it to Maryam when she gave birth to `Isa عليه السلام.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا جاء الرطب فهنئوني ، وإذا ذهب فعزوني . 


When a date arrives then congratulate me, and when it goes then console me.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : بيت لا تمرة فيه كأن ليس فيه طعام . 


A house in which there is no date is as if there is no food in it.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : خلقت النخلة والرمان من فضل طينة آدم « ع » . 


The date palm and the pomegranate were created from the excess of the clay of Adam عليه السلام


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اكرموا عمتكم النخلة ، النخلة والزبيب . 


Honor your aunt the date palm, the date palm and the raisin.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كل التمر على الريق فانه يقتل الدود . 


Eat the date on an empty stomach for it kills the worm.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : نعم السحور للمؤمن التمر . 


An excellent suhoor for the believer the date is.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من وجد التمر فليفطر عليه ، ومن لم يجد فليفطر على الماء فانه طهور . 


One who finds a date, then he is to break his fast with it.  And one who does not come upon one, then he is to break his fast with water, for it is a purifier.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا تردوا شربة العسل على من اتاكم بها .


Do not decline a drink of honey from someone who brings it to you.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لحم البقر داء ولبنها دواء ، ولحم الغنم دواء ولبنها داء .


The meat of the cow is a malady, and its milk is a cure.  The meat of the sheep is a cure, and its milk is a malady.

 

 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالفواكه في اقبالها فأنها مصحة للابدان مطردة للاحزان ، والقوها في ادبارها فانها داء الابدان . 


Betake you to fruits in their coming (beginning of its season), for it makes the bodies healthy, chases away sorrows, and discard them in their going away for it is a malady for the bodies.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : افضل ما يبدأ به الصائم الزبيب والتمر او شيء حلو . 


The best thing that a faster may begin with is the raisin and the date or something sweet.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اكل التين امان من القولنج . 


Eating the fig is a protection against colic.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اكل السفرجل يذهب ظلمة البصر . 


Eating quince removes the darkness of vision.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ربيع امتي العنب والبطيخ . 


The springtime (i.e. life or ease) of my Umma is the grape and the melon.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : تفكهوا بالبطيخ فانها فاكهة الجنة وفيها الف بركة والف رحمة ، واكلها شفاء من كل داء . 


Make merriment with the melon for it is the fruit of the Garden, and in it is a thousand blessings and a thousand mercies, and its eating is the cure of a thousand maladies.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عض البطيخ ولا تقطعها قطعاً فأنها فاكهة مباركة طيبة مطهرة الفم مقدسة القلب تبيض الاسنان وترضى الرحمان ، ريحها من العنبر وماؤها من الكوثر ، ولحمها من الفردوس ولذتها من الجنة واكلها من العبادة . 


Bite the melon and do not cut it, for it is a blessed fruit, pleasant, purifying to the mouth, sanctifying the heart, whitening the teeth, and pleasing the Merciful.  Its smell is from ambergris, its water from Kauthar, its flesh is from Firdaus, its taste from the Garden, and its eating is of worship.


 وعن ابن عباس انه قال صلى الله عليه وآله : عليكم بالبطيخ فان فيه عشر خصال هو طعام وشراب واسنان وريحان يغسل المثانة ويغسل البطن ويكثر ماء الظهر ويزيد في الجماع ويقطع البرودة وينقي البشرة . 


From Ibn `Abbas that he صلى الله عليه وآله said: Betake you to the melon for in it are ten traits: it is food, drink, teeth (sharpens?), and a good smell, it washes the bladder and washes the stomach, it increases the water of the back, in increases (one) in sexual intercourse, it breaks coldness, and it cleanses (clears) the skin.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالرمان وكلوا شحمه فانه دباغ المعدة وما من حبة تقع في جوف احدكم إلا انارت قلبه وحبسته من الشيطان والوسوسة اربعين يوماً . 



Betake you to the pomegranate and eat its pulp for it is the tanner (i.e. softener) of the stomach.  And there is not a seed that enters the mouth of one of you but that it illuminates his heart and holds back from Shaytan and the whispering (al-waswasa, i.e. of the Devil) for forty days.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالاترج فانه ينير الفوائد ويزيد في الدماغ .


Betake you to citron for it illuminates the heart and adds to the brain.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كل العنب حبة حبة فانها أهنأ . 


Eat the grape one by one for it is most wholesome.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كل التين فانه ينفع البواسير والنقرس . 


Eat the fig for it helps hemorrhoids and gout.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كل الباذنجان واكثر فانها شجرة رأيتها في الجنة . فمن اكلها على انها داء كانت داءاً ، ومن اكلها على انها دواء كانت دواءاً . 


Eat the eggplant often, for it is a tree that I saw in the Garden.  So one who eats it upon that it is it a malady (then) it is a malady, and one who eats it upon that it is a cure (then) it is a cure.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كل اليقطين فلو كان لله سبحانه وتعالى شجرة اخف من هذه ، لأنبتها على اخي يونس عليه السلام . 


Eat squash for if there were for Allah سبحانه وتعالى a tree lighter than this, then He would have grown it over my brother Yunus عليه السلام.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا أتخذ احدكم مرقاً فليكثر فيه الدبا فانه يزيد في الدماغ ، والعقل . 


When one of you makes a broth, increase the gourd (?) in it, for it adds to the brain and the intellect.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل رمانة حتى يتممها نور الله قلبه اربعين يوماً . 


One who eats a pomegranate until he completes it, Allah shall illuminate his heart for forty days.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : نعم الادام الزبيب . 


An excellent condiment the raisin is.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ما من احد اكل رمانة إلا مرض شيطانه اربعين يوماً . 


There is no one that eats a pomegranate but that his shaytan becomes sick for forty days.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الكرفس بقلة الانبياء . 


Celery is the vegetable of the prophets.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل الخل . قام عليه ملك يستغفر له حتى يفرغ منه . 


One who eats vinegar, an angel stands over him asking forgiveness for him until he is finished with it.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : نعم الادام الخل وكان النبي يحب الفاكهة ـ العنب والبطيخ . 


“An excellent condiment vinegar is.”  And the Prophet used to love fruit - the grape and the melon.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالزبيب فانه يطفي المرة ويسكن البلغم ويشد العصب ويذهب النصب ويحسن القلب . 


Betake you to the raisin for it quenches the bile, calms the phlegm, strengthens the nerve, gets rid of fatigue, and ameliorates the heart.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالقرع فانه يزيد في الدماغ .


Betake you to the gourd for it adds to the brain.


وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : العناب يذهب بالحمى والكحة ويجلي القلب . 


The jujube removes the fever and the cough, and clarifies the heart.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : شكى نوح إلى الله تعالى الغم فاوحى الله اليه ان يأكل العنب فانه يذهب الغم . 


Nuh complained to Allah تعالى about sorrow, so Allah revealed to him that he eat the grape for it removes sorrow.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا اكلتم القثاء فكلوه من اسفله . 


When you eat a cucumber, eat it from its bottom.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : تفكهوا بالبطيخ وعضوه فان ماءه رحمة وحلاوته من حلاوة الايمان ، والايمان في الجنة ، فمن لقم لقمة من البطيخ كتب الله له سبعين الف حسنة ومحى عنه سبعين الف سيئة . 


Make merriment with the melon and bite it, for its water is mercy and its sweetness from the sweetness of faith, and faith is in the Garden.  So one who swallows a morsel of melon, Allah writes seventy thousand good deeds for him, and erases seventy thousand sins for him.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ان في البطيخ خصال عشرة وهي التي ذكرها من قبل وانه اهدى إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم بطيخ من الطائف فشمه وقبله ثم قال : عضوا البطيخ فانه من حلل الارض وماؤه من رحمة الله وحلاوته من الجنة . 


In the melon there are ten traits - and they are the ones which have already been mentioned.  A melon from Ta’if was given to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم.  So he smelt it and accepted it, then he said: Bite the melon for truly it is from the vestments (hulal) of the earth, its water is a mercy, and it sweetness from the Garden.


 وقيل كان يوماً في محفل من اصحابه فقال رحم الله من اطعمنا بطيخاً فقام علي عليه السلام وذهب فجاء بجملة من البطيخ فاكل هو واصحابه فقال (ص) : رحم الله من اطعمنا هذا ، ومن اكل او يأكل من يومنا هذا إلى يوم القيامة من المسلمين . 


It is said that one day he was in a gathering of his companions.  So he said: May Allah have mercy on him who shall feed us a melon.  So `Ali عليه السلام rose and left.  He came back with some melon, and he and his companions ate.  He صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: May Allah have mercy on the one who feeds us this.  One who has eaten or eats from this our day to the day of the resurrection is from the Muslims.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ما من امرأة حاملة اكلت البطيخ إلا يكون مولودها حسن الوجه والخلق . 


There is not a pregnant woman who eats melon but that her child shall be comely of face and creation.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : البطيخ قبل الطعام ، يغسل البطن ويذهب بالداء اصلا . 


The melon is before the food.  It washes the stomach and removes malady initially.


 وكان صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم يأكل القثاء بالملح ، ويأكل البطيخ بالجبن ، ويأكل الفاكهة الرطبة ، وربما أكل البطيخ باليدين جميعاً .


He صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would eat cucumber with salt, and eat melon with cheese.  He would eat fresh fruit, and would sometimes eat watermelon with both hands.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : شموا النرجس ولو في اليوم مرة ، ولو في الاسبوع مرة ، ولو في الشهر مرة ، ولو في السنة مرة ، ولو في الدهر مرة ، فان في القلب حبة من الجنون والجذام والبرص وشمه يقلعها . 


Smell the narcissus, even if only once a day, and even if only once a week, and even if only once a month, and even if only once a year, and even if only once an epoch.  For in the heart is a seed of madness, judham, and baras, and its smell weeds it out.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الحناء خضاب الاسلام يزيد في المؤمن عمله ويذهب بالصداع ويحد البصر ويزيد في الوقاع وهو سيد الرياحين في الدنيا والآخرة . 


Henna is the dye of Islam.  It increases the believer in his work, gets rid of headaches, limits baras, and increases sexual intercourse.  It is the master of aromatic plants (rayaheen) in the world and the hereafter.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالمرزنجوش شموه فانه جيد للخشام ـ والخشام داء . 


Betake you to marjoram.  Smell it for it is good for anosmia (al-khusham) – and anosmia is a malady.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : فضل دهن البنفسج على الادهان كفضل الاسلام على الأديان . 


The superiority of violet oil over the oils is as the superiority of Islam over the religions.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ما من ورقة من ورق الهندباء إلا عليها قطرة من ماء الجنة . 


There is not a leaf from the endive (or, chicory) leaves but that upon it is a drop from the water of the Garden.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اراد ان يريح فليشم الورد الاحمر . 


One wishes to relax then he is to smell the red rose.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : ما خلق الله شجرة احب اليه من الحناء . 


Allah has not created a tree more beloved to Him than the henna.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : نفقة درهم في سبيل الله بسبع مائة ، ونفقة درهم في خضاب الحناء بتسعة آلاف . 


The cost (nafaqah) of a dirham in the path of Allah is seven hundred, and the cost of a dirham in a henna dye is nine thousand.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : زينوا موائدكم بالبقل فأنها مطردة للشياطين مع التسمية . 


Decorate your tables with vegetables for it is expeller of the shayateen, with the pronouncing of the name of Allah (at-tasmiyyah).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الشونيز دواء من كل داء إلا السام . 


Shooneez (black seed) is a cure for every malady except for death.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كلوا الجبن فانه يورث النعاس ويهضم الطعام . 


Eat cheese for it brings about drowsiness and digests the food.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : كلوا الثوم فان فيها شفاء من سبعين داء . 


Eat garlic for in it is the remedy of seventy maladies.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل السداب ونام عليه أمن من الدوار وذات الجنب .


One who eats rue, and sleeps upon it, is secure from vertigo (ad-duwar) and pleurisy (dhat al-janb).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل الثوم والبصل والكراث فلا يقربنا ولا يقرب المسجد . 


One who eats garlic, onion, and leek, is not to come near to us, nor near to the masjid.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : إذا دخلتم بلداً فكلوا من بقله او بصله يطرد عنكم داؤه ويذهب بالنصب ويشد العصب ويزيد في الباه ـ ويذهب بالحمى . 


When you enter a country then eat of its vegetables or onions.  It shall keep you from its malady, remove hardship, strengthen the nerve, increase in sexual potency - and get rid of fever.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالكرفس فانه ان كان شيء يزيد في العقل فهو هو . 


Eat celery, for if there is a thing that increases the intellect, then it is it.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لو كان في شيء شفاء لكان في السناء . 


If there is healing in anything, then it is in senna.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : عليكم بالاهليلج الاسود فانه من شجر الجنة طعمه مر وفيه شفاء من كل داء . 


Upon you is the black myrobalan, for it is from the trees of Paradise.  Its taste is bitter, and in it is treatment for every malady.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : يستحب الحجامة في تسعة عشر من الشهر ، وواحد وعشرين . 


It is recommended to cup on the nineteenth of the month, and on the twenty first.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : في ليلة اسري بي إلى السماء ما مررت بملك من الملائكة إلا قالوا يا محمد مر أمتك بالحجامة ، وخير ما تداويتم به الحجامة ، والشونيز والقسط . 


On the night of my night journey to Heaven I did not pass an angel from the angels but that they said: O Muhammad, command your community to cupping.  The best means of treatment for you is cupping, shooneez, and costus (al-qust).


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : اكل الطين حرام على كل مسلم ومسلمة . 


The eating of clay is forbidden on every Muslim man and women.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من مات وفي بطنه مثقال ذرة من الطين ادخله الله النار . 


One who dies and in his stomach is a speck of a particle of clay, Allah shall enter him into the Fire.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من اكل الطين فكأنما اعان على قتل نفسه . 


One who eats clay is as though he has only helped the killing of himself.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا تأكلوا الطين فان فيها ثلاث خصال تورث الداء ، وتعظم البطن ، وتصفر اللون . 


Do not eat clay for in it is three traits: it brings about malady, it enlarges the stomach, and it yellows the skin.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من مرض سبعة ايام مرضاً سخيناً كفر الله عنه ذنوب سبعين سنة .


One who is sick for seven days with feverish (sakheenan) sickness, Allah shall conceal the sins of seventy years for him.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا تكرهوا اربعة : الرمد فانه يقطع عروق العمى ، والزكام فانه يقطع عروق الجذام ، والسعال فانه يقطع عروق الفالج ، والدماميل فانها تقطع عروق البرص . 


Do not dislike four: conjunctivitis for it cuts of the roots of blindness, the cold for it cuts of the roots of judham, the cough for it cuts of the roots of hemiplegia (al-falij), and sores for they cut the roots of baras.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الحمى نصيب كل مؤمن من النار . 


Fever is every believer’s lot of the Fire.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : لا وجع إلا وجع العين ، ولاهم إلا هم الدين . 


There is no pain but (i.e. like, as severe as) the pain of the eye, and there is no anxiety but the anxiety of debt.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : الحمى تحط الخطايا كما تحط الشجرة الورق . 


Fever sheds transgressions as the tree sheds leaves.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من سبق العاطس بالحمد لله أمن من الشوص واللوص والقلوص . 


One who follows a sneeze with al-Hamdu lillaah (Praise be to Allah), is safe from the shaus, the laus, and the qulus. (?)


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من قال عبد عند امرئ مريض اسئل الله العظيم رب العرش العظيم ان يشفيك سبع مرات إلا عوفي . 


A servant does not say to a sick person “I ask Allah, the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, that He heal you” seven times but that he is pardoned.


 وقال صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : من شكا عن ضرسه فليضع اصبعه عليه وليقرأ : هو الذي انشأكم من نفس واحدة فمستقر ومستودع قد فصلنا الآيات لقوم يذكرون وبالحق انزلناه وبالحق نزل وما ارسلناك إلا رحمة للعالمين . 


One who complains of his molar, then he is to place his finger on it and recite: It is He who produced you from a single soul, and then a lodging-place, and then repository.  We have distinguished the signs for a people who remember.  And by the truth We have sent it down and by the truth it has been sent down.  And We did not send you but at as a mercy to the worlds.


 وكان صلى الله عليه وآله إذا أتى مريضاً قال : اذهب الوسواس والبأس رب الناس اشف وانت الشافي لا شفاء إلا شفاؤك ، وقيل عاد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله مريضاً فقال ارقيك رقية علمنيها جبرئيل ، فقال : نعم يا رسول الله ، قال بسم الله يشفيك من كل داء يأتيك ومن شر النفاثات في العقد ومن شر حاسد إذا حسد .


He صلى الله عليه وآله would upon coming to a sick person say: Dispel the whisperings (al-waswas) and despair, Lord of mankind.  Heal, and You are the Healer, there is no healing but in your healing.  

It is said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله came back to a sick person and said: Shall I invoke for you an incantation (ruqya) that Jibra’il taught me?  So he said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah.  He said: By the name of Allah, may you be healed of every malady that comes to you, and from the evil of the spitters on knots (i.e. sorceresses), and from the evil of an envier when he envies.
