By the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The narration of Harun b. Musa b. Ahmad at-Talla`ukbari, may Allah be pleased with him, from Abu `Ali Muhammad b. Hammam.  Abu Muhammad Harun b. Musa b. Ahmad at-Talla`ukbari said: Abu `Ali Muhammad b. Hammam (`Ali b. – in another manuscript) b. Suhayl narrated to us.  He said: Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Khaqan an-Nahdi reported to us.  He said: Muhammad b. `Ali b. Ibrahim as-Sayrafi, Abu Sameena narrated to us.  He said: Abu Sa`id al-`Asfari, and he is `Abbad, narrated to me from `Amr b. Thabit, and he is Abu ‘l-Miqdam, from his father.  He said: I heard Abu Ja`far عليه السلام saying: How would you be, O father of Miqdam, when there is an authority (in power) (error in print – سيطة should be سيطرة) between the Haramayn (Makkah and Madinah) concerning which you remain perplexed and you do not find any support who you could take recourse to nor do you comprehend a thing from another? I said: Will it indeed be so? He said: My father used to say that and he would say: Allah does what He pleases and He erases and He establishes and with Him is the Mother of the Book.

`Abbad from `Amr from his father from Abu Ja`far.  He said: Allah created a light, and He created from that light, “Say: He is Allah, the One”.  And He created a thousand wings of light for it, and sent it down to His earth with His trustees from the angels.  Not a congregation of the angels passes by but that they bow down to it, saying: (It is) related to our Lord, related to our Lord!

`Abbad from `Amr from Abu Hamza.  He said: I heard `Ali b. al-Husayn عليهما السلام saying: Verily Allah created Muhammad and `Ali and eleven from his sons from the light of His majesty.  So He raised them as phantoms in the luminosity of His light. They worshipped Him prior to the creation of creation, glorying Allah and sanctifying Him.  And they are the Imams from the sons of the Messenger of Allah.

`Abbad going up to Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: From my sons are eleven highborn chiefs, spoken to (i.e. by the angel) (muhaddathoon), made to understand (mufahhamoon); the last of them is the Qa’im by the Truth; he will fill it (the earth – in another manuscript) with justice as it had been filled with inequity.

`Abbad from `Amr b. Thabit from Abu Ja`far from his father from his fathers.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعليهم said: The stars in the sky are a safeguard for the inhabitants of heaven; so when the stars of the sky go that which the inhabitants of heaven dislike will come.  And the stars of my Ahl al-Bayt from my sons, the eleven stars, are a safeguard in the earth for the inhabitants of the earth lest it may shake with its inhabitants. And when the stars of my Ahl al-Bayt go away from the earth, that which the inhabitants of the earth are averse to shall come.

`Abbad from `Amr from Abu ‘l-Jarud from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Verily I and eleven of my sons and you, O `Ali, are the knobs of the earth, namely its pegs, its mountains. And he said: And Allah fastened the earth lest it sink with its inhabitants. So when the eleven from my sons go, the earth will sink with its inhabitants and they shall not be granted respite.

`Abbad from `Amr from his father from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: I heard him saying: Were the earth to remain a day without an Imam from among us it would sink with its inhabitants and Allah will chastise them with the severest of His chastisements and that is because Allah appointed us as a Proof in His earth and as safeguards in the earth for the inhabitants of the earth. They will never cease to be in security from the sinking of the earth along with them as long as we remain in their midst. So when Allah intends to destroy them, He shall not act hesitantly towards them nor shall He grant them respite. He will take us away from their midst and raise us towards Himself. Then Allah will do with them what He wishes and likes.

`Abbad from `Amr b. Biyaa` as-Sabiri from Ja`far b. Muhammad عليهما السلام. He said: The land of Ka`bah said: Who is like me? And the House of Allah has been created on my surface (lit. my back). People come to me from all directions and I have been made a sanctuary of Allah and His security. So Allah revealed to it: That will be enough! Be quiet! I swear by My Might, there is not a favour which you have been favoured with in (comparison to) what I have granted the land of Karbalaa’ except in proportion to a needle submerged in the sea; then it is borne by the water of the sea. And were it not for the soil of Karbalaa’, you would not have been favoured. And had you not been enclosed by the land of Karbalaa’ I would not have created you nor would I have created the House which you take pride over. So be quiet and settle down! And be humble, lowly and despised in front of the land of Karbalaa’, not acting proudly nor behaving haughtily. And if (you do) otherwise, I will be displeased with you and will throw you into the Fire of Hell.

`Abbad from `Amr from his father from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام: Allah created the land of Karbalaa’ prior to the creation of the land of the Ka`bah by twenty four thousand years and consecrated it and blessed it. So it continued to remain consecrated and blessed prior to Allah creating the creation and shall not cease to be so until Allah makes it the best land in Paradise and the best station and abode which Allah will make His friends in Paradise dwell in.

`Abbad from a man from Abu ‘l Jarud. He said: `Ali b. al Husain صلى الله عليه said: Allah took the land of Karbalaa’ as a sanctuary and security, blessed, prior to the creation of the land of the Ka`bah by twenty four thousand years; (verify translation -->) so when Allah exercised authority (Allah changed the earth – in another manuscript) over the the earths, He raised it (Allah – in another manuscript) like it is – there shone from it (translation?) pure brilliance (<-- verify translation). Then it was placed in the best of meadows from the meadows of Paradise and is the best of the abodes in Paradise where none shall reside save the Prophets and the Messengers. Or, he said: The Possessors of Determination (Ulu ‘l `Azm) from the Messengers. And it radiates from the meadows of Paradise like the brilliant star shines among (amidst – another manuscript) the stars for the inhabitants of the earth. Its light covers the light of the sight of all the inhabitants of the earth (Paradise – another manuscript), and it calls out: I am the land of Allah, the sanctified, and the blessed soil which includes the Chief of martyrs and the youth of the inhabitants of Paradise.

`Abbad from Isma`il b. Dinar from `Amr b. Thabit from Salim b. Abi Hafsa from Salim b. al-Ja`d from Tariq b. Shihab (Sihar – another manuscript). He said: I heard `Ali عليه السلام say: Whoever wishes, he testifies and whoever wishes, he denies, eternally, and whoever associates with those two (the Shaykhayn?) shall be in the Fire of Hell (tr.?).

Abu Sa`eed `Abbad from `Amr b. Thabit from Muhammad b. `Abdullah b. `Aqeel from Fatimah b. al-Husain عليه السلام. She said: A man from Bani Asad came to my father عليه السلام and said: What is the state of a people who command you against your father and they are not commanded against him? He said: Verily the people pledged and made a firm resolution that they shall not turn their back on my father.

`Abbad from Safir al-Hariri (Sufyan – in another manuscript) from his father from as-Sadiq عليه السلام.  He said: `Umar b. al-Khattab sent his agent to Qudama with a measure that is not permissible to any one of the clients but that he be killed.  He said: So the messenger came, and a man from the clients of al-Azd, Jassas, was with Qudama. So he went in front of him and struck his neck (beheaded him).

Abu Sa`id `Abbad from Safir al-Hariri (Sufyan – in other manuscripts) from `Abd ar-Rahman b. Salim al-Ashall.  He said: I asked `Abd al-Malik b. `Umar about ahadith, and he refused to narrate to me.  So I said to him: How much was the measure which `Umar sent?  He said: It was five handspans, sealed with lead, in which two men were killed.

`Abbad Abu Sa`eed from `Amr b. Thabit from Abu Ishaq from Sa`eed b. Jubayr from ibn `Abbas. He said: Abu Bakr ordered Khalid b. Walid, saying: When I surrender (viz. raise my hand), strike the neck of `Ali. He said: Definitely (?) for Abu Bakr! So he contended with his self, then called out: O Khalid! Do not do anything which I ordered you with. So `Ali عليه السلامturned towards Khalid, may Allah curse him, and said: O Khalid! Would you do it? He said: Yes, by Allah! He said: You are more ungrateful/wretched (Verily my killer is the most wretched of the entrusted among you – verify translation) of creation (group – another copy) than this one.

`Abbad from al-Husain; similarly, Zaid b. `Ali from Yahya b. `Abdullah b. al-Husain from Ja`far b. Muhammad. He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله sent Abu Bakr with (Surat al-)Bara’ah. Then Jibra’eel عليه السلام came to him and said: O Muhammad! None can convey it for you save yourself or one who is of you. So he said: Then the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله sent `Ali to Abu Bakr and ordered him to hand over to him (viz. `Ali) the (Surat al-)Bara’ah. He said: For it is the right of `Ali عليه السلام, and with him were `Umar and Abu `Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah and Salim, the retainer of Hudhaifah. They said to him: Do not hand it over to him. So Abu Bakr refused and he handed it over to him. He said: And gather (unite) the people over the writing which they have written among themselves in the Sacred Mosque, that the Apostle of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  was disheartened except when they had turned a thing from it over to `Ali. So when Abu Bakr had it covered, `Ali عليه السلام entered upon him. And he said: Who does not love to meet Allah with the like of this book (sahifa) from this covered one? He said: When `Umar had it covered, it was summoned for him. So he said something similar. He said: Then it is the book (sahifa) which they wrote among themselves that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله was disheartened when they did not turn it over to `Ali عليه السلام(verify translation).

`Abbad Abu Sa`id from al-`Azrami from Thuwayr b. Yazid from Khalid b. Ma`dan from Juwayr b. Na`ir (Mughir – another manuscript) al-Hadrami.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Allah has cursed and the angels have cursed the man who acts like a woman, and the woman who acts like a man, and the man who practises celibacy - and there is no celibacy after Yahya b. Zakariyya – and the man who sits on the road, pretending to be a wayfarer.

`Abbad from Ibn al-`Araz from Thuwayr b. Yazid from Khalid b. Ma`dan from Juwayr b. Na`ir.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Verily for every house is a door and the door to the grave is in front of the two feet.

`Abbad Abu Sa`id from Hammad b. `Isa al-`Abasi from Bilal b. Yahya from Hudhayfa b. al-Yaman.  He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: When you see Mu`awiya b. Abi Sufyan on the podium, then strike him by the sword.  And when you see al-Hakam b. Abi ‘l-`Aas, even if he be under the covers of the Ka`ba, then kill him.  He said: And the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله exiled him to ad-Dahlak, a land from the lands of Ethiopia.  He said: So when Abu Bakr came to power, they spoke to him regarding him.  He said: So he refused to admit him.  He said: So when `Umar came to power, they spoke to him regarding him.  So he said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله and Abu Bakr exiled him, so shall I admit him?  So he did not admit him.  So when `Uthman came to power, he said: `Amr is a shaykh of the Muslims.  He said: So he admitted him and rewarded him with a hundred thousand dirhams from the public treasury of the Muslims.
