Book of Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh al Hadrami

Narration of Harun b. Musa b. Ahmad al Talla`ukbari

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The Shaykh, Abu Muhammad Harun b. Musa b. Ahmad b. Ibrahim at-Talla`ukbari, may Allah assist him, said: Muhammad b. Hammam narrated to us.  He said: Humayd b. Ziyad ad-Dihqan narrated to us.  He said: Abu Ja`far Ahmad b. Ziyad b. Ja`far al-Azdi, the clothier, narrated to us.  He said: Muhammad b. al-Muthanna b. al-Qasim al-Hadrami narrated to us.  He said: Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh al-Hadrami narrated to us from Humayd b. Shu`ayb as-Sabi`i from Jabir b. Yazid al-Ju`fi. He said: Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali عليهما السلام said: Whoever be pleased that there not be between him and Allah a veil on the Day of Resurrection in order that he may look towards Allah and Allah may look towards him, then he should take the progeny of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله for wali and dissociate from their enemy and unite (assemble) with the Imam from among them.  So when he is (like) that, he will look towards Allah and Allah will look towards him.

Ja`far from Humayd b. Shu`ayb from Jabir from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever loves `Ali then he has indeed loved me.  And whoever has loved me then he has indeed loved Allah.  And whoever hates `Ali then he has indeed hated me.  And whoever has hated me then he has hated Allah.  O Allah! Whoever loves `Ali, I love him and whoever hates `Ali, I hate him.  O Allah! I love `Ali; so (You) love him.

Ja`far from Humayd from Jabir.  He said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: The abandoners of the walaya of `Ali, whoever of them died while upon that, are outside of Islam.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: Our walaya is the walaya of Allah which no prophet has ever been sent without.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: Whatever of the world afflicts him, it does not harm the one whom Allah has honoured with being from our Shi`a, even if he is not able to eat anything save pasture.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: Our Shi`a is only the one who follows us and opposes us not, and when we are in fear, he is in fear and when we are in safety, he is in safety.  So these are truly our Shi`a.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: Our hadith is difficult, distressing.  None save a proximate angel or a sent prophet or a servant whose heart Allah has tested for faith, believes in it.  So what your hearts recognize, take it, and what they deny, return (or: revert) it to us.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: There is not one who has lied against Allah or against His Messenger (but that) he is of those who have denied us, the People of the House, or has lied against us, for we (in another manuscript: we only) narrate from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله and from Allah.  So when he denies us, then he has indeed denied Allah and His Messenger.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: The believer is a blessing for (another) believer and the believer is a proof of Allah.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said to us: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said one day while he was in the house of Hafsa: O Allah! Hand over destruction (in another manuscript: succession) and a transition towards the Fire, to one who hates `Ali and bears enmity to him and assists in oppressing him and in infringing his right.  O Allah! Grant succession and a transition towards Paradise to one who loves `Ali and takes him for a wali and hates the one who is inimical towards him and assists him in his right. So Hafsah said: O Messenger of Allah! And who from your nation shall hate `Ali and be an enemy to him and assist in oppressing him and infringe him of his right? He said: So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said to her: Indeed you and your father have perished. Your father will be the one who will assist in oppressing him and you are of those who will be inimical towards him. He said: So she said: May Allah save me and my father from that.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said:  The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: The abandoners of the walaya of `Ali and the deniers of his virtue and those who have a soft corner for his enemies, whoever from them dies upon that, are all outside of Islam. He said: Umm Salamah said: O Messenger of Allah Indeed those who hate `Ali and those who deny his virtue and those who have a soft corner for his enemies are destroyed and I certainly find my heart secure/at rest with `Ali عليه السلام. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: You have spoken the truth and have protected (fortified yourself). Now surely Allah shall not look towards them on the Day of Resurrection and for them is a painful chastisement and He shall not purify them nor speak to them on the Day of Resurrection and for them is a painful chastisement.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Whoever bears enmity towards `Ali and shuns his walaya and loves one who is inimical towards him shall not be saved from the Fire and the intensity of its fury and its groaning and its companionship (qarn )and its hot water. So Maimunah, the wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله said: By Allah! O Messenger of Allah! I do not know anyone among your companions who loves `Ali save a few from among them. He said: So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said to her: The few from the believers are (enumerated as) many. And who do you recognise among them? She said: I recognise Abu Dharr and Miqdad and Salman and indeed you know that I love `Ali due to your love for him and his sincerity towards you. He said: So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said to her: You have spoken the truth. You are one truthful (siddiqah). Allah has tested your heart for faith.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: O Allah! Thou hast ordered me with the love of `Ali; so love the one who loves him and hate the one who hates him. O Allah! Surely Thou hast ordered me that I establish brotherhood with `Ali; so I have taken him for my brother and found him to be the best brother. O Allah! Thou hast appointed him my vizier and I found him to be the best vizier. O Allah! Verily Thou hast appointed him a guide along with me in my soil (teenah) and (he is) the best guide and the one to be followed. O Allah! Verily Thou hast appointed him a leader and a caller towards Paradise for one who testified in him and followed his command. O Allah! Thou hast appointed him a proof over one who disobeyed him and opposed his command. O Allah! Indeed I have conveyed what Thou hast ordered me with regarding `Ali and his children. O Allah! I have not stated about `Ali save that which Thou ordered me with. O Allah! Whoever believes in me regarding what I have said about `Ali and follows me in it, he is from me. O Allah! And whoever denies what I have said about `Ali عليه السلام and abandons my command regarding him, he is not from me.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Jibra’eel came to me and said: Allah has ordered you to love `Ali and to order (people) by his love and his walaya.  Then I will pull out his lovers towards Paradise, (to abide in it) perpetually, due to their love for him; and his enemies and those who shunned his walaya shall be made to enter the Fire – a requital for their enmity towards him and their abandonment of his walaya.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: Whoever desires that Allah make his body healthy, he should not eat except what is good, for surely Allah says in His Book: ‘O Messengers! Eat of the good things and act righteously; verily I know what you do’.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: By Allah! The world will not cease to be (lit. go) until Allah has raised a man from us, the Ahl al Bayt, who acts by the Book of Allah and he will not see an evil but that he will reject it.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: ‘And whoever is made to lose his way from the one who follows his desires without guidance from Allah’, he said: Meaning, one who takes his religion through his opinion without the Imam from the Imams of guidance. And he said about this verse: ‘O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and be with the truthful ones’, meaning the truthful ones, the Imams and those who have endorsed (the truth) with their obedience. And he said about this ayah: ‘Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and believe in His Messenger; He shall grant you two guarantees of His mercy’: Hasan and Husayn, ‘and He will appoint for you a light by which you shall tread’, meaning an Imam with whom you shall gather, and Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: Never shall the Wali of Allah lie about the exegesis of the Qur’an.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: A believer is the brother of (another) believer on the paternal and maternal side, and that is because Allah created the believer from the clay (teenah) of the gardens of the Heavens and caused to flow in their appearances from the wind of His spirit; so that is how they are brothers paternally and maternally.

Jabir said: I asked Abu Ja`far  عليه السلام about the tafsir (exegesis) of this verse about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He: ‘And had they been steadfast upon the path, We would certainly have made them drink abundant water’, meaning, had they been steadfast upon the walaya in the original/first (world) beneath the shadow when Allah took a covenant from the progeny of Adam, ‘We would have made them drink abundant water’, meaning, We would have made their shadows drink the sweet water of the Euphrates. ‘That We may try them through it’, meaning, `Ali, and their trial in him would be their disbelief in his walaya  ‘And whoever turns aside’, meaning, whoever continued in it from the shirk of Iblis. ‘From the remembrance of his Lord’, meaning, `Ali: he is the reminder in the womb of the Qur’an and our Lord is the Lord of all things. ‘He will certainly ensnare him with a heightened chastisement’, meaning, a chastisement beyond the heightened chastisement. ‘And that the mosques (places of prostration) are for Allah’, meaning, the vicegerents of Allah.

Ja`far said: Humayd b. Shu`ayb narrated to me from Jabir b. Yazid from Ja`far b. Muhammad عليهما السلام. He said: I heard him say: `Ali used to say: Come near, come near and ask, for the knowledge has been appropriated (seized, taken hold of). And he would strike his hand on his stomach and say: Indeed, by Allah, it is not filled with fat but instead filled with knowledge. By Allah! There is not a verse which has descended concerning a man from Quraysh nor about the earth nor the land or the sea nor the flat plain nor the mountain but I know regarding whom it has descended and on which day and during which hour it has been sent down (or, it descended).

Jabir said: And I heard him say that `Ali عليه السلام used to say: They will not cease to diminish until they are made to say: ‘Allah! Allah!’ and when the Leader of religion has struck with his adherent (sin?), then Allah will raise the nations from their sides – they will come like the cumulus like the wind-driven clouds of autumn. By Allah! I know their names and the names of their fathers and their tribes and the name of their chief and the way station of their mount (or, rider).

Jabir said: And I heard him say that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله had named Sha`ban as the month of patience and he used to bear patiently and fast in it. Then he would fast in the month of Ramadan and separate them by a day. And `Ali b. Husayn used to say: Fasts of the two consecutive months are penitence from Allah.

Jabir said: I heard Ja`far b. Muhammad say: Fasts of three days of a month is the (equivalent of) fasts of an era. And they remove the devilish whisperings of the breast and the apprehensions of the heart.

Jabir said: And I heard him say that `Ali and the two sons of `Ali are a gate from the gates. So now, whoever (whoever (without ‘so’): another manuscript) enters the gate of `Ali, he is a believer and whoever exits from it, he is a disbeliever and whoever neither enters it nor exits it, he is from a group concerning whom is Allah’s will (mashiyyah).

Jabir said: And I heard him say: By Allah, a servant will be truthful until Allah writes him down among the truthful ones (ones who testify: another manuscript) and he will deny until he is written down among the deniers/liars. And when he speaks the truth, Allah says: He has spoken the truth, and when he lies, Allah says: He has lied and has deviated.

Jabir said: And I heard him say (that): Some men came in the presence of my father رحمة الله عليه and mentioned their dispute with the people to him. So he said to them: Do you recognize what is abrogating and what is abrogated in the Book of Allah? They said: No. So he said to them: And he incites you towards argument that perhaps you may make the haram (unlawful) halal (lawful) and that you may make the halal haram while you know not. Only he can speak about the Book of Allah who recognises the halal of Allah and His haram. They said to him: Do you intend to be a murji’ah (Murjiite)? He said to them: Certainly my father knew you and he judged that I was not a murji’ah but that I was nearer to the truth than you.

Jabir said: And I heard him say that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله used to invite his companions: Whoever Allah desires to do good toward, he hears and recognises what He invites him to and whoever Allah desires to do evil toward, He impresses upon his heart (i.e. He seals his heart), so that he neither hears nor understands and that is the saying of Allah عزوجل: ‘And when they go forth from you, they say to those who possess knowledge: What does he say about the haughty? These are those whose hearts Allah has sealed’. And He says: ‘Verily you cannot make the dead to hear nor can you make the deaf hear the call, when those who turn on their backs have turned away. And you are not a guide for the blind in their deviation’ (al-ayah).

Jabir said: And I heard him say: There will not be a disbeliever who reaches the Dajjal but that he will believe in him, and if he dies while he has not reached him, he will believe in him in his grave. And there will not be a believer who reaches the Dajjal, but that he will disbelieve in him, and if he dies prior to reaching him, he will disbelieve in him in his grave. And between the eyes of the Dajjal is written, ‘kafir’; every believer shall recognise him.

Jabir said: And I heard him say: Our affair (or, command) is difficult, nearly impossible upon the disbelievers. None shall affirm to our affair (or, command) save the sent prophet or the proximate angel (angel made proximate) or a believing servant whose heart Allah has tested for faith.

Jabir said: Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: There is not a servant who remembers Allah within himself but that Allah remembers him in His self, and there is not a believing servant who remembers Allah among the chiefs of the people but that Allah remembers him among the chiefs of the angels.

Jabir said: And I heard him say: Those who loved each other for the sake of Allah will be on platforms of nur (light) on the Day of Resurrection; the nur of their faces and the nur of their bodies and the nur of their platforms shall illuminate everything until they are recognised due to it. So it will be said: These are those who loved each other for the sake of Allah.

Jabir said: And I heard him say: There is not a gathering in which the pious and no wicked individual sits and they disperse without mentioning Allah in it, except that on them will be regret on the Day of Rising.

Jabir said: I heard him say (that): A man came to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have made half of my supplication for you. He said: You? When? (tr.?) Therefore he came to him the following day and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have made all of my supplication for you. So he said: If you have done so, Allah will supply you with the provision of this world and the Hereafter, even if it be a small river.

He said: Do you know how he made his du`aa’ for the Apostle of Allah He only said: Allaahumma! Salli `alaa MuHammadin wa ahli baytihi wa ‘f`al (O Allah! Send Thy benedictions upon Muhammad and the people of his house and make it come into effect). And whenever he desired to supplicate for himself, he would begin with the salawat upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad; then he would pray for himself (repetition in Arabic above? incomplete Arabic after wa ‘f`al?).

Jabir said: and I heard him say that the Apostle of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: O people! Establish rows and let your shoulders touch each other so that there may not be in you any deficiency, and do not disagree, lest Allah should bring about disagreement between your hearts. Now! Surely I see you as being of my nature. And that is the saying of Allah Who ‘sees you when you stand and when you turn yourself into the prostrating ones’ (al-ayah).

Jabir said: And I heard him say that the rahm (tie of relationship), suspended from the `Arsh (throne) says: O Allah! Join with the one who joins (himself) with me or sever the one who severs me off. And it is the rahm of the progeny of Muhammad and it is His saying: ‘Those who join that which Allah has ordered to be joined’. And everyone is a possessor of kinship.

Jabir said: And I heard him say that in the Qur’an are the decisive and the allegorical. Then as to the decisive, we believe in it and act by it and pass judgment by it. And as to the allegorical, we believe in it but do not act by it and it is the saying of Allah in His book: ‘And as to those in whose hearts is perversity, they follow the ambiguous from it, seeking (to cause) strife and seeking its interpretation; and none knows its interpretation save Allah and the ones firmly rooted in knowledge’.

Jabir said: And I heard him say: My father used to say: Beseech your Lord for pardon and well-being, so that you may not be from the men of misfortune. Prior to you, there was from Bani Isra’il who split with the saws that he may be granted disbelief and it was not granted to him, ever (tr.?).

Jabir said: I heard him say that Allah will administer the account of a believer and he will apprise him of every sin. Whenever he will apprise him of that, he will say: Yes, O Lord! Then Allah will say: Indeed, I have forgiven you your sins and He will give his book in his right hand and alter his evil deeds into good and he will go towards the people. So they shall say: Was there not a single sin upon this servant?

Jabir said: I heard him say that the believer is desirous of performing a good (deed). So if he does not act (upon it), one good deed is written down for him and if he performs it, ten are written down for him. And if he intends an evil, then nothing is written against him and if he does it, one evil deed is written against him.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh narrated to us from As`ar (Asfar: another manuscript) b. `Amr al Ju`fi from Muhammad b. Shurayh that he said to Ja`far b. Muhammad عليهما السلام: May I be sacrificed for you! I fear that I may not make the pilgrimage (may not be able to argue?), so teach me something which when I take recourse to it or stretch towards it, shall reprimand/berate me. He said: When al Sufyani has taken control of the Karr and the Khams, meaning Shaam. So when he appears on the districts of Shaam, then turn towards us. He said: I said to him: In the silaah (perhaps intending ‘in battle/war’)? He said: In the silaah. Then he said: He will cause mischief in the two regions and he will not prevail over Makkah and Madinah (translation very unclear).

Ja`far b. `Abdullah b. al Sirri from al Rida. He said: Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: By Allah! Were he to give a brother to me (brother-in-faith) a dirham, it is more liked near me than giving two dirhams in charity to the destitute and if he were to give him two dirhams it is more liked near me than doing charity with four and were he to give four, it is more liked near me than giving eight dirhams in charity to the destitute. And if he were to give to a brother to me in Islam sixty dirhams, it would be more liked near me than the amount he could multiply it by and raise for giving in charity to the destitute.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh from Humayd b. Shu`ayb al Sabi`ii from Jabir al Ju`fi. He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام say: Guard against these debasements from the sins, for there are seekers for them. And let not anyone of you say: (Commit a) sin. And seek Allah’s forgiveness. And Allah says: ‘Soon shall We write down what they had sent earlier and We have recorded all things in a clear Imam’. And He said: ' Surely if it is the very weight of the grain of a mustard-seed, even if it be within a rock, or in the heavens or in the earth’ (al-ayah).

Jabir said: I heard him say: The servant is reckoned with the action of the people of Jannah until there is no more than two hand-spans between him and Jannah when he is perceived as a wretch.  Then Allah will make him enter the Fire. And the servant is reckoned with the action of the people of the Fire until there is no more than two hand-spans between him and the Fire when bliss is perceived for him.  Then Allah will make him enter Jannah.

Jabir said: I heard him say: A Muslim man whom Allah has granted that in which he does not act without Allah’s obedience has the combined reward of two men. So he says: O Allah! Jabir said: I heard him say: A (group of) people entered upon my father. So he said to them: What is the matter with you that some of you dissociate yourselves from others? You have only obtained the obtaining of the Khawarij. And when a man hates (us), then indeed I dissociate from him.

Jabir said: I heard him say: Allah تبارك وتعالى sends down in the last one-third of the night towards the heaven of this world. And He calls: Is there a penitent one who repents so that I may turn towards him? Or is there one seeking forgiveness who seeks it that I may forgive him? Or is there a caller who calls upon Me that I may grant him redemption? Or is there a straitened one (i.e. for whom means have become straitened) who calls upon Me that I may facilitate for him? Or is there an oppressed one who seeks My help that I may help him?

Jabir said: I heard him say: A group of people came to Abu Ja`far عليه السلام. So he asked them about the Shi`a. Do their wealthy revert to the poor among them? And do the healthy among them revert to their ailing? And do they recognise the weak among themselves? And do they visit each other? And do they love each other? And do they advise each other? So the people said: Not a day is like that for them. So Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said: There’s nothing for them until they are like that.

Jabir said: I heard him say: The Prophet of Allah was looking one day from his chamber when he found a man holding onto another. Then he looked in the evening and he was still holding onto him. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله came towards them and said: What makes you two sit over here? One of them said: O Messenger of Allah I have a right upon him but he has prevailed over me against it. The other one said: O Prophet of Allah! He is upon the truth and I am poor, and no, by Allah, it is not with me. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Whoever desires that he be shaded by Allah from the fumes of Jahannam on a Day when there shall be no shade except His shade, he should consider the poor and aid him. So, at that, the man said: Indeed I gift to you a third and defer a third to you towards the sunnah (sinah?) and you present me (?) a third. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله said: Excellent! How good is this!

Jabir said: I heard him say: There is not a servant who stands for prayer, drawing near to Allah with his face but that Allah draws near to him with His face. So if he turns, Allah turns away His face from him and nothing is accounted of his prayer save that which he offered with his heart. And Abu Ja`far عليه السلام was praying one day when something dropped on his head but he did not remove it from his head until Ja`far stood near him and removed it from his head in glorification for Allah and in approaching his (His?) prayer. And it is the saying of Allah: ‘So set your face upright for religion, being true (sincere)’. And it is also about walaya.

Jabir said: I heard him say: How do the people abstain from performing acts of goodness, while `Ali عليه السلام – who was a servant of Allah on whom Paradise is obligatory – used to be intent on achieving His proximity?! I do it only that You may turn my face away from the Fire and that You may turn the Fire away from my face’.

So the man said to him: May Allah have mercy on you! This is the one who I desired. So he folded it up. Then Abu Ja`far عليه السلام said to him: The testimony of La ilaha illa Allah and that surely Muhammad is the messenger of Allah - blessings of Allah and peace be upon him and his household – and the affirmation of what has come from Allah and our walaya and bara’ah (dissociation) from our enemies and submission to our command and humility and piety and tranquillity and awaiting our Qa’im – for if Allah desires to help us, He helps us.

I bear witness that there is no god by Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, blessings of Allah be upon him and his household), and send salutations upon your family. And if you don’t find anyone therein, say: Bismillaahi wa salaamun `alaa rasoolillahi As-salaamu `alainaa wa `alaa `ibaadillahi ‘S-SaliHeen (In the name of Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah). So when he has said that, the Shaitan will flee from his house and when breakfast/ lunch and dinner is set up, say: Bismillah. He said: The Shaitan says to his companions: Leave. There is neither dinner for you here nor lodging. And if he forgets to begin in His name, he says to his companions: Come over, for there is dinner and lodging for you here.

So let every man from among you prepare his argument, for surely he is the adversary of one who wronged him, whether the oppressor or the oppressed. And there is a standard for every traitor on the Day of Resurrection which he will recognise. So whoever breached his fealty, he will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection mutilated (or, as a leper).

Jabir said: I heard him say: Were there a river near the door of one of you from which you would take a bath (do ghusl) five times a day, would there remain any dirt on your body? The likeness of the prayer is as the likeness of the river which cleanses the dirt. Whenever he performs the prayer, it is atonement for his sins except the sin which causes the imaan to leave him when he is persistent upon it.

Jabir said: I heard him say: Do the tahleel (dhikr of la ilaha illa Allah) and the takbeer often. Then he said: A man prayed behind the Apostle of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  one day in the morning. When he had performed the tasleem, the man said: Laa ilaaha illa Allaahu waHdahoo laa shareeka lahoo; lahu ‘l-mulku wa lahu ‘l-Hamd, wa Huwa `alaa kulli shay’in qadeer (There is no god but Allah, He is One, there is no partner for Him. To Him belongs the kingdom and to Him belongs the praise. And He has power over all things). So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  said: Who is the speaker? He was told: So-and-so, the Ansari. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! Eighteen angels are trying to outdo each other to get to him in order to raise it towards the Lord.

Jabir said: I heard him say: Whoever says, ‘SubHaana rabbee wa biHamdih, astaghfiru rabbee wa atoobu ilayh’ (Glory be to my Lord and in His praise. I seek forgiveness of my Lord and I turn to Him.), it rends apart the seven heavens until it reaches the `Arsh and a voice is lent to it like the sound of the iron chain when it is dropped on the earth in a basin.

Jabir said: I heard him say: Whenever anyone of you is tensed, he should say: AlHamdu lillaahi, rabbi ‘S-SabaaHi, alHamdu lillaahi, faaliqi ‘l-iSbaaH. SubHaana rabbi ‘l-Maliki ‘l-Quddoos (All praise is to Allah, the Lord of the morning, all praise is to Allah, the One Who causes the dawn to break. Glory be to my Lord, the King, the Most Holy).

Jabir said: I heard him say about the forbidden months in which the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  lodged the polytheists. He said: Twenty from Dhu ‘l Hijjah and Muharram and Safar and the month of Rabi` al Awwal and ten from the month of Rabi` al Akhir.

Jabir said: I heard him say: There is not a Muslim who gives a loan to another Muslim who seeks it in Allah’s name except that a remuneration of merits of charity is (written down) for him until he returns it to him.

Jabir said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام saying: There’s a rooster for Allah on the earth and its head is beneath the `Arsh. One of its wing is in the East and a wing is in the West. It says: Subhana rabbiya ‘l-Maliki ‘l-Quddus (Glory be to the King, the Most Holy!). So when it says that, the other roosters crow (raise a cry) and answer it. So when you hear the voice of the rooster, then one of you should say: Subhana rabbiya ‘l-Maliki ‘l-Quddus.

Jabir said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام say: O people! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and do not pose too many questions. (A people) prior to you were destroyed due to the excess of their questioning of their prophets, and Allah عزوجل says: ‘O you who believe! Do not ask about things which if manifested to you would grieve you’, and ask about the obligation of Allah upon you. By Allah! A man comes to me and asks me and I inform him. Then he disbelieves. And had he not asked me, it would not have harmed him. And Allah says: ‘Do not ask about them when the Qur’an is being revealed if they have been manifested to you’ (translator’s note: this is incorrect – error in print? – for the ayah in the Qur’an states: وَإِنْ تَسْأَلُوا عَنْهَا حِينَ يُنَزَّلُ الْقُرْآنُ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ‘and if you ask concerning them when the Qur’an is being revealed, they will be manifested for you’) (al-ayah). Certainly a people before you asked them (i.e. posed questions); then they became disbelievers in it.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh narrated to us from `Abdullah b. Talhah al Nahdi. He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلامsay: Dhurayh asked him: May Allah make me your ransom! I have a need from you. So he said: O Dhurayh! Present your hajah, for I would love to fulfil your hajah. So he said: May Allah make me your ransom! Do you all stand in need of a thing which when asked about is not established (recommended – in another manuscript) from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  near you until you have looked into what is with you of the Book? He said: O Dhurayh! Indeed, by Allah, were it not that we had been provided (equipped), we would have exhausted (it). `Abdullah b. Talhah said: I said to him: You have been provided what was with the Prophet He said: Surely Dawud inherited the Prophets and Allah provided him and surely Sulaiman inherited Dawud and Allah provided him and surely Muhammad inherited Sulaiman and Dawud and Allah provided him and surely we inherited the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله  and Allah provided us. We are not equipped with anything which Muhammad did not know of or which I heard my father speak (about). Surely the actions of the servant are proffered to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  every Thursday and he looks into them and he knows what is there in them. So we are not provided anything except that which he knows about.

He said: And I asked Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام about the man whose wife slept with him. Then in the morning she was dead. So her family said: You have killed her. He said: The burden of proof is upon them that he killed her. Otherwise, he should swear by Allah that he did not kill her.

He said: And I asked Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام about the man whose wife descended from the mahmil (camel-born litter) while he was in a state of ihram. So he drew her close to himself lustfully without ejaculating. He said: The (hadd of) the spilling of the blood is upon him and he should not return (i.e. to doing so again).

He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام say: Allah does not accept the prayer of three: the insolent, the disbeliever and the junub who has slept without tahara and who is perfumed with khaluq (a perfume composed of saffron and other materials, of thick consistence, with predominant redness and yellowness in it, whose usage was more associated with women).

And he said: And Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  said: My Lord ordered me with seven characteristics: love of the needy and closeness with them and that I say la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah excessively (verify translation) and that I join relations even if he has severed them from me and that I look towards those who are inferior to me and that I do not look at those who are above me and that the reproach of the reproaching one does not set me off against Allah, and that I speak the truth, even if it be bitter and that I do not ask anyone for anything.

Ja`far from `Abdullah b. Talhah from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله  said: He who has even a mustard seed’s weight of pride in him shall not enter Jannah and no servant who has even a mustard seed’s weight of imaan within him shall enter the Fire. So I said to him: May I be ransomed for you! Then, by Allah, surely a man from among us who wears new clothes or rides an animal, is closer to entering it (i.e., the Fire). He said: That is not what is meant by that. The pride is only in one who is haughty regarding our walaya and denies the ma`rifah (recognition) of the Imams among us. So whoever has a mustard seed’s weight of that, He will not make him enter Jannah and whoever acknowledges the ma`rifah of our Prophet and acknowledges our right, He will not make him enter the Fire.

And Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: There are three whose work Allah shall not accept nor look towards them nor open for them the doors of Heaven: a man who claims Imamate from Allah while he is not an Imam, a man who denies an Imam from Allah and a man who claims that such and such has a share in Islam.

Ja`far from `Abdullah b. Talhah from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: There are three whose prayer is not accepted by Allah: a slave who absconds from his masters until he returns to him and places his hand in their hands, a wife who spends the night while her husband is angry with her and a man or (?) a people while they are averse to him.

And he also mentioned from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام that he said: Ask me before you lose me, for surely if you lose me, you will not find anyone who will narrate to you the like of my hadith until the Master of the Sword rises.

And he also mentioned that he said: I asked Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام about the wife who says to her husband: I am forbidden to you in my assembly and my discourse and my tears (?) (my pendent hairs – translator’s note: probably referring to pubic area). He said: Yes, you are forbidden to me (in) your assembly and your discourse and your tears (?) and your genitals. He said: This is not divorce and it is not permissible to him what he has forbidden to himself. He knows better what he has done. I heard Allah عزوجل say: ‘All food was made lawful to the Bani Isra’il save what Isra’il had prohibited to himself’ [Surat al Ali `Imran: 93]. So because he prohibited to himself, it is prohibited to him.

And he also mentioned from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام that he said: A finite people shall not lead: the illegitimate-born, the uncircumcised one, the Bedouin, the insane, the leprous and the slave.

And he also mentioned from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام that he said: There are seven things from the consumption of ill-gotten wealth (or, what is forbidden): bribery in judgment and the mahr (dowry) of the prostitute and the wage of the soothsayer and the price of the dog and those who construct the edifice over the graves and those who form the images and the wage of the Bedouin (i.e. a Bedouin who is paid to go as a substitute).

And he also mentioned from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام that he said: The Apostle of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said that humility only adds to the nobility of a servant, so be humble; Allah will elevate you. And the sadaqah (charity) only adds to increase of wealth, so give charity; Allah will have mercy on you. And pardon only adds to the respect of a servant, so pardon; Allah will grant you respect.

He said: Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: Nothing of wealth is lost in the land or sea, save through prevention of zakah (poor-rate); so fortify your wealth with zakah. And treat your ailing ones with sadaqah and repel the doors of misfortune through seeking forgiveness.

He said: And Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said that the thunderbolt shall not afflict the one who mentions/remembers Allah and the birds are not hunted save due to loss of glorification. I said: How shall we treat our sick with sadaqah? He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله was asked (lit. told): O Messenger of Allah! Which of the sadaqah is the best? He said: Exertion of the eyes(?). And when there is a sick person near you whose ailment has frustrated you, take a loaf of your bread and put it into a kerchief/tissue or a clean piece of cloth. So whenever a mendicant enters, give him from it a small piece and it should be said to him: Pray to Allah for so-and-so. Then surely they are responded to concerning you and they are not answered concerning themselves.

He said: And I heard him say: There was a slave for `Aishah and it is said about him (that he was called), Abu Dhikwan, and he used to lead her since Allah seized His Messenger till she died.

And he also said from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام that a man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله and said: O Messenger of Allah! Surely the members of my family have determined on pouncing on me and abusing me and severing me off. So I have abandoned them (or, You abandon them, depending on harakah), O Messenger of Allah He said: When they (all) have abandoned collectively, re-establish it against him. He said: All of that? The Messenger of Allah said to him: The like of this saying. He said: And how do I do (that), O Messenger of Allah (<< verify translation until here) He said: Join with the one who has severed you off and give to the one who denies you and pardon the one who has oppressed you. So when you do that, there shall be an aider for you against them from Allah.

And he also mentioned from him that he said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Kindness and good neighbourly relations (are responsible for) increase of sustenance and longevity in this world.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh from Abu 's-Sabah al-`Abdi – and it is said for him, al Kinani – from Yazid b. Khalifa. He said: We came into the presence of Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. When we were seated near him, he said: You look where Allah looks and you choose where Allah chooses (from) while the people go right and left, and you resolve upon what Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله and the people of his house resolve upon while you are upon the white rock. Then assist that with piety when we desire to rise. He said: What does it matter to a servant when Allah recognises him if the people do not recognise him? Surely whoever works for the people, his reward is with the people and whoever works for Allah, his reward is with Allah, and all ostentation is shirk.

Ja`far from Abu ‘s-Sabah that Zurara said: Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: My father used to say that the Fire shall not devour anyone who is characterised by (attains?) this affair. So I said: May I be your ransom! Surely among them is one who does things for which Allah has made the Fire obligatory on the one who acts on them. He said: My father used to say: When it is that from him, He will afflict his body with sickness and fear until he exits the world and there is no sin upon him.

Ja`far b. Abi 's-Sabah from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: You look where Allah looks and you choose from where Allah chooses and you love us while the people bear malice for us and you join with us while the people cut us off. You, by Allah, are our Shi`a and you are the Shi`a of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله, and that, by Allah, is the saying of Allah: ‘Allah knows best where He places His message’ [Surat al An`aam: 124]. Then he said: Surely the people of this opinion rejoice until their souls reach to this – and he stretched out his hand towards his throat. And it is said: Truly, what you fear of your world’s affair, is that it will separate from you and truly, what you hope of your next world’s affair is what you will be allotted due to fear of Allah. Associate with the people and give them and assist them and do not avoid them and speak to them as Allah said: ‘And speak a good word to the people’ [Surat al Baqarah: 83]

Ja`far from Abu ‘s-Sabah from Bashir ad-Dahhan from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: I heard him say: You join while the people sever and you love while the people bear malice and you recognise while the people deny, and it is the truth. Surely Allah took Muhammad as a slave prior to taking him as a messenger and surely `Ali was a slave of Allah – he was sincere towards Allah, so He advised him, and he loved Allah, so He loved him. Surely our right is enshrined in the Book of Allah. He distinguished for us the purest of wealth and surely we are a people whose obedience Allah has enjoined in His Book and you are those who gather with the one whose ignorance people are not excused for. And indeed, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: Whoever dies while he does not have an Imam over him, then his death is the death of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era). Be careful of (your duty towards) Allah, if you wish to be regarded as the companions of `Ali.

Ja`far from Abu ‘s-Sabah from Khuthaimah al-Ju`fi from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام. He said: I intended to take his leave. So he said: O Khuthaimah! Convey the salutations to our partisans and commend them with the fear of Allah and commend their wealthy ones to visit the poor among them and their strong ones to visit the weak among them and their living ones to witness the funeral of the dead among them and that they meet each other in their houses, for surely the meeting of some of them with the others in their houses enlivens our affair. May Allah have mercy on the servant who enlivens our affair! O Khuthaimah! Inform our partisans that we do not need anything from them from Allah except with action and that they will never attain our walaya except through wara` (piety) and that the most regretful of men on the Day of Resurrection shall be the one who was described as just. Then he acted contrary to it.

Ja`far from Abu ‘l Sabah from Abu Baseer. He said: I entered into the presence of `Ali (he was the son of Wadhaa` al Asadi) while he was ailing. So he said: O Abu Baseer! I sense that Abu Ja`far عليه السلام has guaranteed the Jannah for me. I said: He has guaranteed the Jannah for you? He said: Yes, by Allah! So I hurried off after that until I came into the presence of Abu Ja`far عليه السلام. So he said to me: `Ali interpreted that he saw me; it has alarmed you. He said: I said: Yes, by Allah! He said: So what did he say to you? He said: I said: He informed me that you have guaranteed the Jannah for him. He said: By Allah, he has spoken the truth!

Ja`far said: And Ibrahim b. Jubair narrated to me from Jabir al-Ju`fi. He said: Muhammad b. `Ali عليه السلام said to me: O Jabir! Surely the Bani `Abbas have a standard and others beside them have (their) standards. Beware! Then beware, of two (one?) of the three, until you see a man from the children of Husayn عليه السلام being pledged allegiance to between the rukn and the maqam. The weapon of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله and the helmet of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله and the armor of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله and the sword of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله are with him.

Ja`far from Ibrahim b. Jubayr from Jabir from Muhammad b. `Ali عليه السلام. He said: The fulfilment of the need of a Muslim man is better than (freeing) ten lives and i`tikaf (seclusion for the sake of Allah) in the mosque.

Ja`far from Ibrahim from Jabir. He said: Muhammad b. `Ali عليهما السلام said to me: Put your cheek to the earth and do not move your feet until Rome has descended on Rumailah and Turkey on al Jazirah (the Arabian peninsula or the river plain of Mesopotamia) and a caller calls out from Damascus.

Ja`far said: `Abd al-`Aziz b. `Abd al-Jabbar al `Abdi narrated to me from Isma`il b. Sulaiman from Muhammad b. Shurayh who said: Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: Whoever visits his brother, not desiring through that anything of the world, Allah will write down for him for it (the visit) ten good deeds and erase ten evils from him and raise him ten stages and fulfil fifty needs of his. And the superiority of the visitor over the visited is as the superiority of the right over the left. Then he passed it (the right hand) over the other (the left hand).

Ja`far said: `Ammar b. `Asim ad-Dubbi narrated to me. He said: A man from our companions narrated to me that he met a man from his friends and he said to him: Is it possible for you to come (with us) to Jabir? So the man said to him: Come (lit. go) with us. When we entered into his presence, he said: Jabir took (?) he mixes up his hadith. Until I said to my companion: Come with us. So Jabir said: Sit down, both of you, for I have a need towards you. He said: So we sat down. When he had parted with the one who was with him, he offered crumbled moistened bread with some flesh-meat to us. So we ate until he said: He died, by Allah besides Whom there is no god. He said: We said: Who, O Abu Muhammad? He said: al-Walid died, by Allah besides Whom there is no god. He said: So we recorded that day (i.e. date) with us and we checked. He had, indeed died on that day.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh narrated to us. He said: `Ammar b. `Asim narrated to me from Muhammad b. Shurayh from a man from Tayy who was his neighbour, with the like of it about Hisham b. `Abd al-Malik.

Ja`far said: Abu Sa`id al-Mada’ini narrated to me from Muhammad b. `Ali from `Ali b. al-Husayn عليهما السلام from his father عليه السلام. He said: A man came to my father. So he spoke to him. Then he said: A man from our Shi`a shall come on the Day of Resurrection, with the crown of nubuwwah (prophethood) over him. Seventy angels in front of him shall lead the ride towards the gate of Jannah. Then he will be told: Enter Jannah without any accounting.

Ja`far from Abu Sa`id or Humayd, from Jabir, said: I heard him say: The saying of Allah عزوجل: ‘And there is naught from the People of the Book but shall believe in it before his death’ [Surat al Nisaa’: 160], he said: That is Muhammad, the benedictions of Allah be upon him and upon the people of his house. Neither a Jew nor a Christian shall die until he recognises that surely he is the Messenger of Allah and that he had been a disbeliever.

Ja`far b. Muhammad said: I heard Mu`alla at-Tahhan who mentioned from Yazid b. Yazid b. Jabir from `Abdullah b. Bishr (in another manuscript: Shubayr/Shabbeer) from Abu `Uyayna b. Hisn, who said: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله appeared one day while Abu `Uyayna b. Hisn b. Hudhaifah b. Badr was with him. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: I am more discerning about the horses than you. And `Uyaynah said: And I am more discerning about the men than you, O Messenger of Allah! So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله said: How? He said: Then he said: I am the best of those men who position their swords on their shoulders and exhibit their lances on the shoulders of their horses from the people of Najd. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله said: You have lied! The best of the men are the people of Yemen and faith is a security (?yamaan) and I am a yamaani  and most of the tribes entering the Heaven on the Day of Resurrection will be of Madhhaj; and Hadramaut is better than the progeny of Harith b. Mu`awiya. Hurry from his disbelief,  for he will destroy the neighbourhoods. So do not refuse me. And the curse of Allah is upon the four kingdoms of Haida and Mashraha and Mahusa and as-Sa`d and their sister, al-`Umrada.

Ja`far b. Muhammad said: And I heard al Mu`alla, who said: Muhammad b. Ziyad informed us from Maimun from ibn `Abbas from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله, who, when the people from Yemen entered upon him, said: Welcome, the clan of Shu`aib and the fellows of Musa.
