Chapter 23

The forbiddance of pride in oneself and in the act and being conceited by it

1 – Muḥammad b. Yaʿqub from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad from Ibn Mahbub from Dawud b. Kathir from Abū ʿUbayda from Abū Jaʿfar

He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: God تعالى said: From my believing servants is he who strives in my worship, so he gets up from his sleep and the pleasantness of his pillow, and strives for me in his nights.  He wearies himself in my worship, and I strike him with drowsiness for the night and two nights, a consideration from me for him, and a preservation for him.  So he sleeps until he enters morning, and gets up while he abhors himself rebuking (himself) for it.

Had I left between him and what he wanted of my worship, pride from that would have entered him.  So pride would have turned him unto strife (al-fitna) with his acts, and from that there would come to him what wherein is his destruction by his pride with his acts, and his self-satisfaction, until he would suppose that he has exceeded the worshipers, and passed the bound of falling short in his worship.  So he would be separate from me at that, while he supposes that he is close to me (- al-ḥadīth)

And al-Ṣadūq and al-Ṭūsī narrated it as has preceded.

2 – And from ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm from Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā from Yūnus from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥajjāj.

He said: I said to Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام: The man does the act while he is fearful, cautious, then he does something of piety and the likeness of pride enters in him with it.

So said: He was in a better state in his first state while he was fearful than in the state of his pride.

And al-Barqī narrated it in al-Maḥāsin from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Najrān from Abū ʿAbdillāh عليه السلام likewise.
