Chapter 25

The permissibility of taqiyya in the acts of worship, and its obligation with fear of harm

1 - ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Murtaḍā in Risāla al-Muḥkam wa al-Mutashābih transmitting from Tafsīr al-Nuʿmānī by his coming isnād from ʿAlī

He said: And as to the license in which its possessor has the choice, so God has prohibited the believer from taking the unbeliever as a guardian (walī).  Then he bestowed the release of license for him with taqiyya in the apparent (al-ẓāhir) that he fast by his fasting, breaks his fast by his ifṭār, prays by his prayer, acts by his act, and show for him the making use of that expanded for him in it.  And it is upon him to profess for God تعالى in the inside (al-bāṭin) in opposition to what he shows to the one he fears from the opponents, the occupiers of the Umma.

God تعالى said “Let not the believers take the unbelievers for friends, rather than the believers – for whoever does that belongs not to God in anything – unless you have a fear of them” (3:28), so this is a license by which God has favored the believers out of mercy to them.  They are to employ it with taqiyya in the apparent.

The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: Indeed God loves to be taken by his license as he loves to be taken by his decisions.

I say: And there is coming what indicates upon that and upon the rules of taqiyya in the section of commanding to good and prohibiting evil.
