Chapter 16

Ghusl of janaba

When you want to do the ghusl of janaba then (first) try to urinate so that you may remove what is left of semen in your urethra.  Then, wash your hands three times before you put them in the vessel, then perform istinja and cleanse your private.  Then, put three handfuls of water on your head, and part your hair with your fingers so that the water reaches the root of all of the hair.  Then, take the vessel in your hand, pour it over your head and body twice, and pass your hand over all of your body.   Wipe your ears with your fingers.  Everything that the water reaches is thus purified.

Make an effort that there not remain a hair from your head and beard but that the water enters under it, for it is narrated that someone who leaves one hair from janaba and does not wash it on purpose, then he is in the Fire.

If you want to do the mouth-rinsing (al-madmada) and the nose-rinsing (al-istinshaq) then do so, but they are not obligatory, for the ghusl is upon that which is external, not what is inward.   However, if you want to eat or drink prior to performing ghusl then it is not permissible for you unless you wash your hands, do the mouth-rinsing and do the nose-rinsing.  For verily if you eat or drink prior to that, then baras is feared for you.

It is narrated that if the junub immerses himself in the water with a single (i.e. complete) immersion, then that suffices him for his ghusl.

If you become junub multiple times during a day or night, then a single ghusl suffices for you, unless you become junub after the (first) ghusl or you have a nocturnal emission.  If you have a nocturnal emission, then do not have sexual intercourse until you have performed ghusl for the nocturnal emission.

There is no harm with the junub or the menstruating woman (al-ha’id) doing remembrance of Allah تعالى or reciting the Quran, except for the `aza’im in which one does sajda.  And they are: [Alif Lam Meem Sajda (32)], Ha Meem Sajda (41), an-Najm (53), and sura Iqra Bismi Rabbika (96).

Do not touch the Quran if you are junub or without wudu, (and the page is touched).

One who has something exit from his urethra after the ghusl and who had urinated prior to the ghusl has nothing upon him.  And if he did not urinate prior to doing the ghusl, then the ghusl must be repeated.

There is no harm with partitioning the ghusl, that is that you wash your hands, privates, and head, and then delay washing your body [until the time of salat and then you wash your body] if you want to do that.  If you have a hadath of urination, defecation, or flatulence occur after you had washed your head and prior to you washing your body, then repeat the ghusl from its beginning [to its end.]

The junub and the ha’id do not enter the mosque, except in passing through.  They are allowed to take something from it, but they are not allowed to put something in it, for they are not able to take what is in it from somewhere other than it, but they are able to put what is with them somewhere else.

If you have a nocturnal emission in a mosque from the mosques, then leave it and do a ghusl, so long as you did not have the nocturnal emission  in the Masjid al-Haram or the Masjid of the Messenger of Allah If you did have a wet dream in one of these two mosques, then do tayammum and go out, and do not walk in them but that you are in a state of having done tayammum.

If the junub sweats in his clothing, if the janaba was from a halal (e.g. lawful intercourse with one’s spouse), then it is allowed to pray in them, and if it was from a haram (e.g. fornication), then it is forbidden to pray in them.
