Chapter 20

Ghusl of the deceased

The deceased person (al-mayyit) has the words of relief (kalimat al-faraj) instructed to him during his death, and they are: there is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous, there is no god but Allah, the Exalted, the Magnificent, glorified be Allah, Lord of the seven Heavens and Lord of the seven Earths, and what is in them and what is between them, and Lord of the mighty throne, and peace be upon those sent, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

It is not permissible for the menstruating woman and the junub to be present during the instructing (at-talqin), for the angels are bothered by them.  So if they are present, and they find no way out of that, then they must leave when the exiting of his soul draws near.

As-Sadiq عليه السلام was asked about orientation (tawjih) of the dead.  He said: The soles of his feet are faced to the qibla.

The one to give ghusl to the deceased is the person who is most entitled (awla) to him (i.e. in inheritance), or the one whom the guardian (al-wali) has commanded to do that.

The washer of the deceased cuts his kafan.  He begins with the outer covering (here meaning the bedding on which the kafan is placed) and spreads it.  He spreads the wrap upon it, and he sprinkles a bit of scented powder (dharira, made from calamus aromaticus) upon it.  [He spreads the izar upon the wrap and sprinkles a bit of scented powder upon it.  And he spreads the qamis upon the izar, and sprinkles a bit of scented powder upon it] and he does much of it.  He writes upon his qamis, his izar, his wrap and the two palm-leave stalks “So-and-so testifies that there is no god but Allah”.  He wraps them up together, and he prepares a mi’zar.  He takes the two palm-leave stalks [from the palm], green and fresh, the length of each one being upon the measure of the length of the forearm.

When he is done with the matter of the kafan, he places the deceased upon the place of washing.  He puts the backside of his legs towards the qibla, and puts on the qamis from above to his navel, leaving it until he is done with his washing so that he may cover his privates with it.  If there is no qamis upon him, then he is to place something on his privates to cover them thereby.  He is to soften his fingers gently, and if it becomes difficult for him then he is to leave it.  And wipes his hand upon his stomach with a gentle wiping.

My father, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his epistle [to me: Begin with his hands and wash them] with three large jugfuls of lote-tree water (ma’ as-sidr).  Then wrap a rag on your right hand.  Place on it something of hurud, that is, potash.  Place you hand under the clothing, and someone other than you pours the water over you from above his navel, washing his frontal privates and posterior, not cutting off the water from him.

Then, you wash his head and beard with the foam of the sidr, and after it with three large jugfuls, and you do not make him sit.

Then, turn him on the left side so that the right side is showing towards you.  Lay his right hand on his right side to the extent that it reaches.  Then, wash him with three large jugfuls from the top of his head to his foot, not interrupting the water from him.

Then, turn him on the right side so that the left side is showing towards you.  Lay his left hand on his left side to the extent that it reaches.  Then, wash him with three large jugfuls from the top of his head to his foot, not interrupting the water from him.

Then, turn him on his back, and wipe his stomach with a gentle wiping.  Then, wash him another time with a little bit of camphor like the first washing.  Shake the containers in which there is the water, and wash him a third time with clear water.  Do not wipe his stomach a third (time).

While you are washing say “Allahumma, your pardon, your pardon” for verily Allah pardons one who does that.

As-Sadiq عليه السلام said: One who performs the ghusl for a deceased believer, carrying out the trust, Allah forgives him.

It was said to him: And how is the trust carried out?

He عليه السلام said: He does not report what he sees, [and its limit is until the deceased is buried.]

[As-Sadiq عليه السلام said: “Five] are waited for unless they change: the drowned, the one struck by lightning, the one who (died) of an ailment in the stomach, the wrecked (one dies under a collapsed building?), and the one who (died) by smoke.

The one afflicted by smallpox and the burnt, if it not possible to perform ghusl on them, pour water upon them and collect together what drops from them in their kafan.
