Chapter 23

Prayer over the deceased

When you pray over the deceased, then stand by his head, do takbir, and say “Ashhadu al-laa ilaaha illalllaahu waHdahu laa shareeka lahu wa ashhadu anna MuHammadan `abduhu wa rasooluhu, arsalahu b’il-Haqq, basheeran wa nadheeran bayna yadayis-saa`ah.”

(I testify that there is no god but Allah, He is unique, He has no partner.  And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger.  He sent him with the Truth, giving tidings and warning before the Hour)

Then do the second takbir, and say “Allaahumma Salli `ala MuHammadin wa aali MuHammad, warHam MuHammadan wa aala MuHammad, wa baarik `ala MuHammadin wa aali MuHammad, ka afDali ma Sallayta wa baarakta wa taraHHamta `ala Ibraaheem wa aali Ibraaheem, innaka Hameedum majeed.”

(Allahumma, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and send baraka upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as the best of what you had blessed and sent baraka and had mercy upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, verily You are praiseworthy, glorious.)

Then do the third takbir, and say “Allahumma ‘ghfir lil-mu’mineena wa ‘l-mu’minaat, wa ‘l-muslimeena wa ‘l-muslimaat, al-aHya’i minhum wa ‘l-amwaat.”

(Allahumma forgive the believing men and women, and the Muslim men and women, the living from them and the dead.)

Then do the fourth takbir, and say “Allahumma (inna haadhaa) `abduka wabnu `abdika wabnu amatika, nazala bika wa anta khayru manzoolim bihi.  Allahumma innaa laa na`lamu minhu illa khayran, wa anta a`lamu bihi.   Allahumma in kaana muHsinan fazid fii iHsaanihi wa in kaana musee’an fatajaawaz `anhu wa ‘ghfir lahu.

(Allahumma, [verily this is] Your slave, son of Your slave and son of Your maidservant.  He has become Your guest and You are the best of hosts.  Allahumma, verily we do not know but good from him, and You know him better than us.  Allahumma, if he was doer of good, then increase him in his goodness.  And if he was a doer of evil, then overlook it for him and forgive him.  Allahumma, put him, Your slave, in the highest (level) of `Illiyyeen, and requite his family in those that remain, and have mercy on him by Your mercy, O most merciful of the merciful.)

Then do the fifth takbir, and do not depart from your place until you see the janaza (i.e. the funeral bier) on the arms of the men.

If you pray over a woman, then stand near her chest.

If you pray over a mustad`af (someone who was made weak i.e. one who was not Shi`a but who is ignorant of the differences of the madhahib and does not hold hatred against the people of truth), then say “Allahumma ‘ghfir lilladhee taaboo wa ‘t-taba`oo sabeelaka, wa qihim `adhaaba ‘l-jaHeem”.

(Allahumma, forgive those who have repented and followed Your path, and save them from the punishment of Hell.)

If you do not know the madhhab of the deceased, and say “Allahumma inna haadhihi ‘n-nafs anta aHyaytahaa wa anta amattahaa, Allahumma wallaahaa maa tawallat, wa ‘Hshurhaa ma`a man aHabbat.”

(Allahumma, verily You brought this soul to life and You made it to die.  Allahumma, entrust it to whatever it had entrusted (itself) to, and gather it with whomever it loved.)

If you pray over a Nasibi, then say between the fourth and fifth takbir “Allahumma 'khzi (ikhzi) `abdaka fii `ibaadika wa bilaadika, Allahumma aSlihi ashadda naarika, (Allahumma adhiqhu) Harra `adhaabika, (fa innahu kaana) yuwaali a`daa’aka, wa yu`aadi awliyaa’aka,  wa yubghiDu ahla bayti nabiyyika.”

(Allahumma, disgrace Your slave amongst Your slaves and Your countries.  Allahumma, roast him in the severest of Your Fire. [Allahumma, make him taste] the heat of Your punishment, [for verily he had been] a friend/helper to Your enemies, and been at enmity to Your awliya, and he hated the people of the house of Your prophet.)

So when he is raised then say “Allahumma la taraffa`hu wa la tazakkahu.”

(Allahumma, do not raise him (high) and do not let him be purified.)

The child is not prayed over unless he apprehends the salat, so when you are present with a people that are praying over him, then say “Allahumma ‘j`alhu li-abawayhi wa lanaa faraTan.”

(Allahumma, make him a preceder (i.e. cause of recompense beforehand) for his parents and for us.)
