Chapter 43

Number of rak`at in the day and night

The salat in the day and night is fifty one rak`a.  The farida of it is seventeen rak`a, and what is apart from that is sunna and nafila.

So as to the farida: zhuhr is four rak`at, `asr is four rak`at, maghrib is three rak`at, the final `isha is four rak`at, and the early morning (i.e. fajr) is two rak`a.

And as to the sunna and nafila, it is thirty four rak`a.  From it: the nafila of zhuhr is sixteen rak`at, eight prior to zhuhr and eight after it prior to `asr, the nafila of maghrib is four rak`at, and after the final `isha there are two rak`a sitting down which count as one rak`a.

So if an occurrence should occur with the man prior to him reaching the end of the night, and he prays the witr, he will have performed the witr.  And the salat of night (salat al-layl) is eight rak`at, the shaf` is two rak`a, and the witr is one rak`a.  And there are two rak`a of fajr.  So these (in total) are thirty four rak`a.
