Chapter 55

Salat of the traveler

The bound which obligates shortening (of prayers) upon the traveler is that his journey be eight farasikh (pl. of farsakh).  So when his journey is four farasikh, and he does not intend to return on the same day (lit. from his day), then he has a choice.  If he wants he (may) complete (his prayers) and if he wants he (may) shorten (them).  And if he intends to return on the same day then shortening is obligatory upon him.

And the one who completes in his journey is as the one who shortens in his residence.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Whoever prays four (rak`at) in travel on purpose, then unto Allah I am disassociated (bari’) from him.

And completing is not allowed in travel, except for someone whose journey is in disobedience to Allah عز وجل, or a journey to hunt which is out of vanity or merriment.

So as to the ones upon whom completing in the salat and fast is obligatory during travel: the mule driver, the hirer (?), the courier, the shepherd, and the sailor, for it is their work.

And the companion of the hunt, when his hunt is of what his family makes use of, then shortening is (obligatory) upon him in salat and the fast.
