Chapter 56

Virtue of the congregation (al-jama`a)

Allah عز وجل has obligated thirty five salat from Jum`a to Jum`a.  In them is a single salat which Allah عز وجل has obligated (to be done) in congregation, and it is the jum`a.  And it has been unburdened from nine: the minor, the elder, the insane, the traveler, the slave, the woman, the sick, the blind, and whoever is upon the head of two farsakh.

And the qira’at in it is done aloud, and the ghusl in it is wajib.  Upon the imam in it there are two qunut: a qunut in the first rak`a prior to the ruku`, and in the second after the ruku`.

Someone who prays it by himself alone, then he is to pray it in four (rak`at) like the salat of zhuhr in the rest of the days.

So when seven (men) gather together on the day of Jum`a and they do not fear, one of them leads them and sermonizes them.

The sermon is after the salat, for the two sermons are in place of the last two rak`a.  The first one who sermonized prior to the salat was `Uthman, for when what happened had happened, the people did not consider his sermon, and due to this he preceded it.

The seven which we have mentioned are: the imam, the mu’adhdhin, the qadi, the claimant of a right (i.e. plaintiff), the claimed upon (i.e. defendant), and the two witnesses.

as-Sadiq عليه السلام said: The virtue of the salat of the man in congregation over the salat of the man alone by himself is twenty five degrees in the Garden.
