Chapter 59

Salat of the night (salat al-layl)

The time of salat al-layl is when the last third of the night comes in.  And it is eleven rak`a: from them are eight rak`at that are the salat al-layl, two rak`a that are the shaf`, and a one rak`a that is the witr.  In ever rak`a you recite al-hamd (surat al-fatiha) and what is easy for you from the Quran, for Allah عز وجل said “And recite what is easy for you from the Quran” (73:20)

And whoever prays the first two rak`a from the salat al-layl with al-hamd and qul huwAllahu ahad (surat al-ikhlas) thirty time in each rak`a, he finishes from it and there is not between him and Allah عز وجل a sin but that He has forgiven him (or, it).

And as-Sadiq عليه السلام said: Whoever seeks the forgiveness of Allah seventy times in the witr, Allah عز وجل writes him as being from the ones who seeks forgiveness in the early dawn with Him.

And he عليه السلام said: Whoever prays at night, his face is made handsome by day.

And he was asked about the saying of Allah عز وجل “Verily the good deeds remove the evil deeds” (11:114)  So he said: The salat of the believer at night removes what he did of sin during the day.

And pray the two rak`a of fajr prior to the fajr (dawn), during it, and after it.
